- Chapter 35 - The Educated Youth Doesn’t Behave 34
After finishing the meal, a gust of wind blew down the street where Duan Jia was walking. She finally snapped out of her daze and started praising Luo An with endless enthusiasm.
“Although I’ve always thought you were amazing, your skills today really shocked me! Why is it that one chop from you can knock someone out, but mine is nothing more than a tickle?”
Of course, Luo An wouldn’t admit she used inner strength. “Maybe because you’re a fairy, and I’m a tomboy?”
Duan Jia looked down at her plump figure, then at Luo An’s slim waist, and suddenly suspected that Luo An was mocking her. Anyone who saw the two of them would say she looked sturdier, right?
“Fine! That’s not the point.”
“Then what is the point?”
“The point is, if you keep dawdling, you’ll miss the excitement.”
With that, Luo An quickened her pace toward the educated youth office, and Duan Jia had to jog after her, still pestering, “Who was that man just now? Why was he willing to help you?”
It was like she had ten thousand questions!
Luo An was beginning to regret bringing this girl along—the chatter was giving her a headache.
Fortunately, the educated youth office wasn’t far. Unlike when they left, the place was now a noisy mess, crowded with people, with more still rushing over.
“What happened? What’s going on? Why’s everyone running over there?”
“No idea! Doesn’t matter, let’s go too!”
Two middle-aged women dashed past them as they talked. Luo An clicked her tongue in amusement. Guess it’s human nature to gossip—I’m not the odd one out.
She grabbed the panting Duan Jia by the hand and, slippery as an eel, pushed her way through the crowd until they had VIP seats.
“Close your eyes if you must—remember, you’re still an unmarried girl.”
Luo An’s eyes gleamed as she stared at Wang Qiang and the other two, who were surrounded by Deputy Director Qin, though her mouth couldn’t resist reminding Duan Jia.
Duan Jia: “…Aren’t you unmarried too?”
Uh…
Luo An had always considered herself an old hag, so she didn’t feel scandalized watching such a chaotic scene. But Duan Jia was a genuine young maiden, a newly blooming flower—her eyes shouldn’t be tainted by such sights.
“Just close your eyes. Why so many questions? Or are you actually interested in looking at that disgusting scene?”
Flustered, Duan Jia blushed scarlet. Even though she kept her eyes shut, the aunties around them were giving a live commentary! It was impossible not to know what was happening. Pouting, she finally obeyed.
Deputy Director Qin, who had long held grudges against Wang Qiang, deliberately refused to have anyone fetch clothes. Instead, he read their “evidence of misconduct” aloud, one by one, piece by piece.
Wang Qiang and his two companions, still bearing marks from their earlier escapades, huddled together under a torn curtain for cover, ears ringing from the pointing and mocking all around.
They knew they were finished. Even if they could endure the shame, the charges listed by Deputy Director Qin would be enough to ruin them for good.
Crouched down, Shao Jing peered through a gap in the crowd and spotted Luo An’s smiling face. Something in his mind snapped.
“Luo An! It’s you! It’s all your fault! Why did you harm me?”
The other two immediately turned to glare at Luo An as well, their eyes brimming with hatred, especially Wang Qiang.
Since climbing to the post of director, his days had been blissful. This wasn’t even the first time he’d done such things. Who could’ve guessed he’d finally kick the iron plate?
How could he not hate her!
“You b1tch! You b1tch! You b1tch!”
Luo An had no patience for his barking. She bent down, picked up a stone, and flicked it.
Smack! Wang Qiang’s cheek instantly swelled, and his filthy curses died in his throat.
Ahh, much better.
When the three were finally marched off to the police station under Deputy Director Qin’s watch, Luo An happily led Duan Jia back home.
On the way, Duan Jia chirped like a lark, excitement and admiration in every word.
In her past life, they had run into something similar, but that time Duan Jia had risked her life to save the original Luo An. The journey back had been filled with fear and disgrace.
This time, everything was different.
As they neared the village, Luo An spotted Da Hua’s father driving an ox cart with a group of people, rushing out as if something urgent had happened.
But before the cart reached them, the village head’s wife saw the two girls. She hurriedly jumped down and rushed over.
“Are you two alright?”
Her tone and expression were completely genuine—full of worry.
She looked them over from head to toe. Seeing that neither was harmed and both were even smiling, she let out a long sigh of relief.
“You two dead girls! Knowing there was danger, yet you still walked right in. What if something happened? How would your families bear it? If Educated Youth Xu hadn’t noticed you were missing and gone to fetch your uncle, we’d still be in the dark.”
She didn’t even want to imagine it. If her own child had been trapped like that, she’d have wanted to chop the culprits into pieces.
By now, the village head, Da Hua and her father, Xu Quan, and Yu Sheng had all gathered around, every word dripping with concern.
“It’s fine, it’s fine, really! We’re okay!”
“Yeah! They’re the ones who got it bad!” Duan Jia’s tone left no doubt that there was a juicy story behind it.
But blocking the road to gossip didn’t seem proper, so they all piled onto the ox cart and headed to the village head’s home.
As soon as they entered, the village head’s wife couldn’t hold back.
“What happened exactly? Shao Jing also asked for leave today—did you see him?”
The two nodded obediently. “Saw him? We saw plenty of him.”
The way they said it carried layers of meaning…
The others’ gossiping souls burned bright, and they pressed for details.
Of course, Luo An couldn’t very well brag about her own heroics. So she gave Duan Jia a meaningful look.
After so long together, they’d built a certain tacit understanding. Catching the cue, Duan Jia immediately launched into her performance—voice full of emotion, gestures lively—recounting everything Luo An had done. The listeners were left stunned, mouths agape.
“This… what you’re saying is real?”
The village head’s wife felt like she was listening to a storybook, not reality.
“Of course! If I lie even a word, may lightning strike me.”
Well… maybe she exaggerated a bit here and there, but it was basically true.
“Oh heavens above! Lucky this girl is skilled! Some women in the village didn’t want their kids learning self-defense before, but tomorrow I’ll go scold them awake. What’s more important, chores at home or your child’s safety? Such foolish, short-sighted people!”
True to her word, the next day the village head’s wife went door to door urging families to let their children practice. Even if they didn’t end up as nimble as Luo An, a move or two would strengthen the body.
By the time everyone headed to the fields, a man in a Zhongshan suit arrived on a bicycle with an announcement: Shao Jing had committed a crime and was being escorted away to another place.
The nearby villagers overheard every word. Suddenly, the farmwork was the last thing on their minds.
