Amid the rising sound of jeers around them, Qin Yu remained silent, quietly watching Sheng Nuan.
Sheng Nuan clicked her tongue. “Everything I said is true. Believe it or not, up to you.”
Her words had already been spoken. But good words can’t persuade a damned ghost… there’s no one else to blame for that.
With that, she started the car. “Let’s go…”
Luo Lin cast a cold glance at the people still mocking Sheng Nuan outside and sneered inwardly.
A bunch of fools!
Sheng Nuan and Luo Lin drove away while the convoy prepared to camp inside the building.
Thinking of Sheng Nuan’s warning, Qin Yu hesitated for a moment before taking the lead. Wielding his long blade, he sliced through the dense vines and peered into the basement.
The light was a bit dim, but you could still see the basement floor was a chaotic mess of dirt and weeds. However, there were no signs of aberrations or mutated creatures.
Mutated plants wouldn’t pose too much of a threat. After all, plants typically aren’t deadly…
Once he finished his inspection, Qin Yu returned to inform the others. “I’ve checked, and nothing seems off for now. But in today’s world, there’s no telling what could happen. If anyone’s still uneasy, you’re free to search for another place to camp.”
After his words, the group exchanged glances. In the end, no one left.
“Who would believe anything that ugly monster says…”
“Exactly. It’s laughable. She’s just making a fuss to draw attention.”
The woman Sheng Nuan had saved earlier glanced at the ones mocking her and said, “Miss Sheng’s reminder was out of good intentions. Can’t you even tell good advice from bad? Qin Yu took it seriously enough to double-check, yet all you do is mock someone who offered a kind warning?”
Embarrassed, the scoffers sneered but kept quiet.
The convoy soon began setting up camp inside the building and began preparing food. Their vehicles were parked in spots easy to leave from in case they needed to make a quick escape…
Meanwhile, Sheng Nuan and Luo Lin drove further ahead. When they reached a slope, Sheng Nuan stopped.
For some reason, she found this spot pleasing to the eye.
With nightfall approaching and traveling after dark being unsafe, Sheng Nuan glanced at Luo Lin. “Let’s camp here, shall we?”
Luo Lin surveyed the area, then nodded. “Alright.”
They parked near the slope, which provided a windbreak, and set up their tent.
They lit a campfire and prepared to cook something to eat.
Although the spring water had healed most of Luo Lin’s injuries, he was still weak.
During the day, he insisted on alternating driving with Sheng Nuan, but she took on the longer shifts. Despite that, Luo Lin remained weary and frail.
With their supplies plentiful, Sheng Nuan wrapped Luo Lin in a blanket inside the tent and started cooking a hearty vegetable and lean meat porridge. When it was ready, she filled a porcelain bowl to the brim and handed it to Luo Lin with a spoon.
Luo Lin, holding the steaming bowl wrapped in his blanket, saw the concern in Sheng Nuan’s eyes. Pressing his lips together slightly, he whispered, “Thank you, Sister.”
Sheng Nuan smiled. “No need to thank me.”
After their meal, Sheng Nuan tossed the dirty dishes into her dimensional space, intending to wash them when they found water.
She urged Luo Lin to sleep early, saying she would take the night watch. After thinking for a moment, Luo Lin replied, “Then Sister will take the first half of the night, and I’ll take the second half.”
Sheng Nuan didn’t argue, chuckling as she agreed. “Alright, go to sleep. I’ll wake you when it’s your turn.”
Only then did Luo Lin hum in response and burrow under the blanket.
Outside, hearing Luo Lin tossing and turning, Sheng Nuan deliberately teased him, “Luo Lin, are you scared of sleeping alone? Want Sister to keep you company?”
Luo Lin immediately fell silent, pressing his lips together and made no sound, steadying his breath as if pretending to be asleep…
Fortunately, Sheng Nuan only teased him with that one remark and said nothing more. Luo Lin, holding the soft blanket in his arms, allowed a sliver of the vulnerability he had long kept tightly sealed to quietly slip out…
Lying in the tent, he gazed silently at the patterns on the canvas, feeling a bit lost.
He was thinking, could he really get his revenge?
If not for this ugly monster, he would have likely died in that bandit camp… and his death would have been death both disgraceful and wretched.
Moreover, that ugly monster had her own reasons for saving him. If she ever turned against him, he probably wouldn’t even be able to resist.
Someone like him, could he really… take revenge?
As Luo Lin quietly slept inside the tent, Sheng Nuan leaned against her backpack, checking the farmland inside her spatial space.
When she had just placed the bowl inside, she caught a glimpse and noticed that the planted area had already grown lush and verdant. She was almost shocked.
How could they have grown this much already?
It really was a paradise…
But as Sheng Nuan inspected the crops more closely, her expression turned blank, and she fell into silence.
What… were these things?
The customer service said it was supposed to be peas, but they had grown to half a person’s height, with pods larger than human heads, standing upright and rigid… On closer inspection, each pod had a round opening, revealing rows upon rows of thumb-sized peas packed tightly inside.
The promised cabbages had sprouted long stalks, with tiny cabbages perched on top like hats.
The most outrageous was the corn… It somehow looked just like the cabbages. Two leaves sprouted from the ground, and from the center emerged a stalk with a massive, golden ear of corn at the top, swaying slightly…
The giant red chili peppers resembled flames, and the nearby cherry trees bore cherries the size of eggs.
Sheng Nuan reached out, wanting to pluck a cherry to taste… But the moment her hand touched the cold, icy cherry, something clicked in her mind.
Wait a minute—she finally remembered why these things looked so familiar. Wasn’t this from a game she used to play?
‘Plants vs. Zombies’—pea shooters, cabbage-pults, corn cannons… and even freaking jalapeños and cherry bombs?
Sheng Nuan looked at the eager plant weapons all over the ground, glanced at the giant potato standing taller than a person in the distance, and then at the huge pile of weapons she had looted. She fell into deep thought…
She had thought she could turn the apocalypse genre into a farming one, but it turned out it was still an apocalypse after all.
The customer service also realized something was off. After struggling for a long while, it finally squeezed out a word of comfort: “Well, Host, look, the tomatoes and cucumbers are still pretty normal. At least you can eat those…”
Sheng Nuan: “Stop talking. I need a moment of silence…”
With the moon high in the sky, a chilly breeze swept across the desolate wasteland. Sheng Nuan planned to lean against her backpack and take a nap. After all, there was still customer service to keep watch.
Just then, the tent stirred. Luo Lin crawled out.
Sheng Nuan blinked. “Why are you up?”
Luo Lin glanced at her and sat by the fire. “It’s time for Sister to rest.”
Sheng Nuan wanted to say she didn’t need it, but seeing that Luo Lin had no intention of negotiating, she chuckled helplessly and winked at him. “Such a good boy, knowing how to feel sorry for your sister.”
Luo Lin’s eyes flashed with annoyance.
This ugly monster—will she die if she goes a day without saying something flirty?
A blanket was tossed onto him the next second. “Wrap up. It’s cold at night.”
Luo Lin paused briefly, then took the blanket, wordlessly sitting by the fire as Sheng Nuan retreated into the tent. After instructing customer service to stay alert, she quickly fell asleep…
After an unknown amount of time, she was suddenly awakened by customer service.
Customer service: “Host, wake up. Something’s happening.”
Sheng Nuan’s eyes snapped open. “What’s going on?”
Customer service hushed her: “Be careful. Sneak a peek outside…”
Outside? Did something happen to Luo Lin?
Suppressing the urge to rush out, Sheng Nuan quietly unzipped a small gap in the tent and peeked outside. In the next instant, she froze in place…
