- Chapter 17 - The Heiress Will Not Be a Cannon Fodder 017
Sheng Nuan had no idea that, despite not even meeting face-to-face, Sheng Mian already harbored resentment toward her.
The day after the school celebration was a weekend. Early in the morning, Sheng Nuan headed to the hospital… Ye Nanxun’s mother was scheduled for surgery.
Perhaps because she had helped Ye Nanxun a lot as her online persona “Changing Destiny Against Heaven’s Will,” Ye Nanxun had become much more sincere toward her, and would even chat about other things from time to time.
Last night, Ye Nanxun mentioned that his mother would be going into surgery the next day. The operation might take a long time, and although he trusted Dr. Lawrence’s medical skills, he was still nervous since it was a major operation.
Sheng Nuan had comforted him with a few words and then decided to visit the hospital the next day… After all, she was currently his “girlfriend.”
Ye Nanxun was surprised to see Sheng Nuan at the hospital, but his mother was about to be wheeled into the operating room. He had to assist the nurse with the bed and take care of the various medical charts, and he couldn’t manage it all by himself. Sheng Nuan helped by carrying some items.
Soon, Ye Nanxun’s mother was wheeled into the operating room…
Once the operating room light came on, Ye Nanxun sat there motionless, staring at the direction of the operating room, his entire demeanor visibly tense.
Sheng Nuan glanced at him and clumsily tried to comfort him, “Don’t worry, Dr. Lawrence is very skilled. Everything will go smoothly.”
Only then did Ye Nanxun realize Sheng Nuan was still there…
For a moment, his expression revealed discomfort, and he almost instinctively wanted to tell her to go back. But the words stuck in his throat.
His mind was blank, filled with unease, and he felt light-headed. Having someone beside him gave him a sense of much-needed reassurance.
The surgery lasted seven hours… Finally, in the afternoon, the operating room light turned off, and the door opened.
Ye Nanxun sprang to his feet and strode over, his whole body tense, and for a moment, he couldn’t bring himself to speak.
Dr. Lawrence, with his blonde hair, removed his mask and smiled, “The surgery was a success. Don’t worry.”
Ye Nanxun let out a long sigh of relief, repeatedly thanking the doctor.
Sheng Nuan, standing in the back, met Dr. Lawrence’s gaze.
Only then did she remember that the original Sheng Nuan knew Dr. Lawrence.
Dr. Lawrence walked over to her, smiling, “Well, look who it is, our little Princess Ivy. It’s been a while.”
Ye Nanxun, focused entirely on the operating room, didn’t pay attention to this interaction. Sheng Nuan breathed a sigh of relief and greeted politely, “Hello, Uncle Lawrence.”
Dr. Lawrence winked at her, “Is that your little boyfriend, Ivy? Does Leslie know about this?”
Sheng Nuan glanced at Ye Nanxun, who was anxiously peering into the operating room from the door, and shook her head, “No, he’s just a friend. Thank you, Uncle Lawrence. I’ll definitely visit you when I have the chance next time.”
Dr. Lawrence winked, “No need to thank me. After all, I owe Leslie a favor. I’ll make sure to pick out a good bottle of wine from his cellar when I get back…”
After a while, Dr. Lawrence and the nurses left.
Ye Nanxun saw Sheng Nuan talking with Dr. Lawrence but was too preoccupied to pay much attention. He accompanied the nurses as they moved his mother to the ICU, stayed outside for a while to ensure everything was in order, and only then did he finally feel a sense of relief
Turning around, he realized that Sheng Nuan was still there…
Ye Nanxun’s mood was a bit complicated as he walked over and quietly thanked her, “Thank you for this time.”
Sheng Nuan smiled and waved her hand. “No need to thank me. It’s too much for one person to handle the surgery alone, and I didn’t have much to do. It was the least I could do.”
Ye Nanxun was silent for a moment before quietly saying, “If there’s ever anything you need me to do, just let me know.”
Sheng Nuan immediately realized what he was thinking… He didn’t believe her words at all and still thought that she had ulterior motives for helping him.
She put on a slightly hurt expression and said, “We’re supposed to be a couple now. There’s no need to be so distant, right?”
Ye Nanxun looked up and met Sheng Nuan’s somewhat dim expression… She stared at him quietly as if she genuinely cared about his attitude.
He frowned slightly, then averted his gaze, remaining silent.
Sheng Nuan sighed and said, “I know you don’t like me. How about this… Instead of half a year, let’s do it for three months. You be my boyfriend for three months, and then we break up. How about that?”
Ye Nanxun looked at her, paused for a moment, and slowly nodded, “Okay.”
Sheng Nuan immediately brightened up with a smile.
She said, “You take care of Auntie. I’m heading home. If anything comes up, just let me know.”
With that, she cheerfully waved at Ye Nanxun and left…
After Sheng Nuan left, Ye Nanxun sat in a chair outside his mother’s special care ward, his brows slightly furrowed and his eyes filled with doubt.
What exactly does she want to do?
It couldn’t be that she actually liked him… That would be too ridiculous.
Not long after, his phone rang.
“Hello, your food delivery has arrived. Please pick it up at the first-floor reception desk…”
Ye Nanxun was stunned.
The only person who knew he was at the hospital and hadn’t eaten was Sheng Nuan.
When Sheng Nuan returned home, she found a few more people in the house than usual. They were staff who came to deliver dresses and jewelry.
Only then did she remember that in a couple of days, she was going to attend a grand engagement banquet with Sheng Lingshan. It was the child of one of Sheng Lingshan’s friends.
These dresses and jewelry were sent by Leslie, with both dresses being from the same collection—a kind of alternative parent-child outfit… Besides the dresses and jewelry, Leslie also sent two bouquets of flowers.
Even though they had separated, it was clear Leslie still cared for and was attentive to Sheng Lingshan.
Over the past few days, Sheng Nuan had learned from customer service that the reason Leslie eventually fell from grace and died was ultimately due to choosing the wrong ally.
In his power struggle within the Norman family, Leslie had chosen to collaborate with the Field family’s eldest son, Baron Field. But what he didn’t know was that, although this Baron seemed to hold more power within the Field family, in reality… the entire Field family later fell into the hands of an illegitimate son.
And Shang Yue was that mixed-race illegitimate son of the Field family.
Leslie and Shang Yue’s older brother collaborated; the latter helped Leslie deal with the enemies of the Norman family, while Leslie assisted him in dealing with Shang Yue.
For this reason, Leslie pretended to support Shang Yue, which is also why Leslie had contact with him.
But Leslie never realized that Shang Yue had already seen through his true intentions… Later, the Field family’s baron lost in the power struggle against Shang Yue, the illegitimate son. Leslie was retaliated against by Shang Yue, caught between enemies, and swiftly met with defeat and death.
Thinking about this, Sheng Nuan couldn’t help but feel a sense of helplessness.
Should she try to find a way to let Leslie know that Shang Yue is the ultimate victor in the Field family’s power struggle…
