- Chapter 221 - The Village Girl Supporting Role Will Not Be a Cannon Fodder 045
Another week passed, the final exams were over, and winter break had finally arrived.
Pei Shuo had already informed his family that he would accompany Sheng Nuan home for the New Year during winter break.
He booked sleeper train tickets in advance and returned to Qinghe Village, stepping through the pristine snow.
By this time, Sheng Fei’s brick factory was up and running… from the village entrance, a massive chimney could be seen in the distance, billowing black smoke.
Sheng Nuan’s teeth ached at the sight.
It was only because environmental regulations weren’t strictly enforced in this era; otherwise, Sheng Fei’s brick factory would have been shut down in two days.
But she also knew that the brick factory was truly making a lot of money now.
It was the only brick factory in the entire county, and anyone building within a ten-mile radius needed bricks. Transporting bricks from elsewhere would incur a hefty shipping cost. Because of this, within just a month of opening, after Sheng Fei publicly invited people from surrounding villages to inspect the brick quality, orders quickly flooded in.
Now, the entire brick factory was operating around the clock, with brick orders lined up until next September… the Sheng family had become the wealthiest in the surrounding villages.
When Sheng Nuan returned home, she found that the house had also been tidied up. The main house looked brand new, and the side rooms in the courtyard had been renovated, with new doors and windows installed. Pei Shuo’s room, in particular, had been redone, with neatly laid red bricks on the floor and a new bed.
Sheng Nuan teased him, “Do you see this? This is son-in-law treatment.”
Pei Shuo chuckled, “I’ll have to thank Mom and Dad later.”
Sheng Nuan couldn’t help but laugh, “How shameless.”
Her eldest sister, Sheng Xia, was also staying with them. After the storage room was renovated and furnished, it became a home for Sheng Xia, her husband Jin Xing, and their child. Jin Xing now worked at the brick factory, earning a good income thanks to his brother-in-law, and treated Sheng Xia much better than before.
Sheng Xia’s status in her in-laws’ home had changed too…
The stationed troops had left in the last lunar month, making the village feel much quieter. But with Sheng Nuan and Pei Shuo’s return, the Sheng household instantly became lively, filled with laughter and cheer.
That afternoon, Sheng Nuan unexpectedly spotted Xie Ze at home.
Xie Ze, dressed in dusty clothes and with a soot-smeared face, walked into the courtyard, grinning at Sheng Nuan and showing off a row of bright white teeth. Sheng Nuan didn’t recognize him at all.
It wasn’t until he finished washing his face that she recognized him—it was Xie Ze.
She was incredibly surprised. “What are you doing here?”
Xie Ze laughed, “Yes, I’m now the sales manager of the brick factory. You can call me Manager Xie.”
Sheng Fei entered from outside, laughing and cursing, “Manager my ass. You’re just selling bricks, and you don’t even need to sell them, people come to place orders on their own.”
Xie Ze sighed, “Can’t you preserve a bit of my dignity…?”
Then Sheng Nuan learned that Xie Ze had arrived in Qinghe Village half a month ago, telling Sheng Fei he planned to travel and might not come back. He came to say goodbye to him, but was left to work in the brick factory by Sheng Fei.
After dinner that evening, Sheng Fei quietly told Sheng Nuan, “At the time, I thought he didn’t look quite right. He didn’t look like someone planning to travel, but like a person getting ready to die, you know? I figured, even if he’s a bit of an idiot, a life is still a life, so I kept him here…”
Sheng Nuan nodded thoughtfully, “So that’s it.”
Sheng Fei clicked his tongue, “Just the other day, he asked me to get him a house in the village so he could settle down. A proper city guy, getting hooked on firing bricks! Do you think he’ll eventually ask me to find him a wife too? I haven’t even found one for myself yet…”
Sheng Nuan couldn’t laugh nor cry. “Aren’t you thinking too far ahead?”
Sheng Fei thought about it and realized she had a point, but he was still a bit speechless. “He divorced Sheng Xi, yet he doesn’t feel the least bit embarrassed living in our village… By the way, did you know Sheng Xi is back?”
Sheng Nuan hummed.
Sheng Fei shook his head in amazement. “She was sent back, practically tossed out of the car right at her doorstep. The whole village is talking. She married Xie Ze but ended up involved with Xie Ze’s father… No wonder Xie Ze didn’t want to live anymore. Who wouldn’t feel that way?”
Sheng Nuan coughed dryly. “Okay, go get to work.”
Behind Sheng Fei, Xie Ze leaned casually against the wall, listening with a half-smile as Sheng Fei gossiped about him.
Sheng Fei didn’t notice Sheng Nuan signaling him and kept rambling, “They say Xie Ze’s dad went to prison, and his wife is tough. She made sure Sheng Xi lost the baby she was carrying, then threw her out like trash without giving her a single cent… Honestly, what a mess. It’s quite exciting, don’t you think?”
Sheng Fei was muttering quietly to himself when a voice suddenly sounded behind him, “If you want to know, you can just ask me directly.”
Sheng Fei froze, eyes widening.
Sheng Nuan raised a hand to her forehead and looked away. “Uh, I have something to do. You guys carry on.”
She quickly turned and left. Behind her, Sheng Fei forced a sheepish laugh. “Ah, it’s nothing, nothing…”
Back in Pei Shuo’s room, Sheng Nuan couldn’t stop laughing.
Pei Shuo had just finished helping Sheng Qingyang with some work and washed his hands. As he walked over, he dried his hands, then lifted her up and set her on the table, leaning down to kiss her gently.
After a few kisses, he asked, “What’s making you so happy?”
Sheng Nuan curled her lips, “Sheng Fei’s usual mishaps…”
Pei Shuo’s raised the corners of his lips. He traced her ear with his fingers, leaning in to kiss her again. After a while, he reluctantly pulled away.
Sheng Nuan leaned against his chest and suddenly remembered their first meeting.
She chuckled, “Do you remember the first time we met? You were about to wash up, and I barged in. Tsk… If I’d known, I would’ve come in a bit later. If I’d come later, I might’ve caught a full view of a handsome guy fresh out of the bath.”
She grinned mischievously.
A hint of amusement flashed in Pei Shuo’s eyes as well.
At that time, he never would have guessed that the little girl who barged into his room would become the one he held dear.
Sheng Nuan asked, “Do you know what my first impression of you was at that time?”
Pei Shuo raised an eyebrow, “Tell me.”
Sheng Nuan laughed, “I thought, wow, this muscular guy is so tall and strong. One punch and he could send me straight home…”
Pei Shuo chuckled helplessly and pinched her cheek.
Sheng Nuan was a little curious, “What about you? What was your first impression of me?”
Pei Shuo recalled that day for a moment and then thoughtfully said, “My impression was… your eyebrows were quite dark, and your lips were strangely red…”
Sheng Nuan froze for a moment… she suddenly remembered the yaksha makeup she had been wearing that day.
She wanted to go back three minutes and give herself two slaps. She had to mention her dark history when she could have brought up anything else!
She gritted her teeth. “I order you to forget that day immediately. Do you hear me?”
Pei Shuo raised his eyebrows, “Not possible. Such a memorable day can’t be forgotten.”
Sheng Nuan was so angry that she reached out to scratch him, but he scooped her up and walked toward the bed.
Pei Shuo’s voice was low and husky, “It’s still early. Why don’t we do something more memorable here? Maybe then I’ll forget about that day?”
Sheng Nuan: ……
When did this man become so cunning, coming up with an excuse like that?
She was unable to refuse…
T/N: And that’s the last chapter for this arc. I’m so excited for the next one (∩˃o˂∩)♡ It’s my favorite arc of the whole novel and is also the reason I picked up this book in the first place.
