- Chapter 23 - The Heiress Will Not Be a Cannon Fodder 023
Ye Nanxun had made significant progress, which eased Sheng Nuan’s mind considerably. However, she soon noticed something was off.
Sheng Lingshan seemed to have something on her mind, always wearing a worried expression. The bodyguards around her also visibly became more alert and tense.
Then Sheng Nuan learned from customer service that the cousins from the Leslie and Norman families were at war… a power struggle without the smoke of gunpowder.
The two were evenly matched, making the battle all the more thrilling… Leslie had transferred a large sum of money into Sheng Lingshan’s account a few days ago, clearly preparing for the worst.
Sheng Lingshan was so worried that she couldn’t eat or sleep, and had to hide her troubles from her daughter. She visibly deteriorated, becoming more haggard.
Sheng Nuan knew that Sheng Lingshan was under great pressure, so she could only pretend to be oblivious and not ask any more questions.
Customer service couldn’t provide an accurate prediction about Leslie’s victory or defeat… But for Sheng Nuan, this was already much better than the original plot.
In the original plot, Leslie was caught off guard and poisoned, and by the time the confrontation occurred, he was already at a disadvantage. However, now he at least seems to be somewhat prepared.
Sheng Nuan had nothing to do but continue with her daily routine, attending school as usual.
The incident with Sheng Mian had passed, and Sheng Mian’s situation has improved somewhat… After all, she does have some skills; otherwise, she wouldn’t have become a figure who is the center of attention, surrounded by stars.
The only thing unsettling Sheng Mian was Gu Lanfeng’s attitude.
Since the last incident was exposed, Gu Lanfeng has not actively spoken to her again… Even when she takes the initiative to ask him questions when they do meet, his reactions remain very indifferent.
One morning, Zhou Ru made sandwiches and asked Sheng Mian to deliver one to Gu Lanfeng.
Sheng Mian felt a little nervous as she approached Gu Lanfeng’s classroom. But seeing the knowing and teasing glances from his classmates, she relaxed a bit.
Yes, everyone knows that she and Gu Lanfeng are close. They grew up together and were childhood sweethearts… So, what did she have to worry about?
Gu Lanfeng was reading a book with headphones on. Sheng Mian walked over and placed a sandwich on his desk.
Gu Lanfeng looked up, his brows furrowing slightly upon seeing her.
Sheng Mian pressed her lips together and said softly, “My mom asked me to bring this to you. She made it especially for you.”
Everyone around looked over, and some, who were close to Gu Lanfeng, even made playful faces at him… Just as Sheng Mian thought that things were about to return to normal between them, she saw Gu Lanfeng reach out and push the sandwich back.
“Thank you, Auntie, but it’s okay, I’ve already eaten.”
Sheng Mian froze, forcing a smile. “I’ve already brought it, so if you’re not hungry now, just have it later.”
After speaking, afraid that there might be another awkward situation, Sheng Mian turned to leave. But as soon as she moved, Gu Lanfeng grabbed her.
The sandwich was placed back into her hand, and Gu Lanfeng said in a flat tone, “Thank you, but it’s not necessary. Don’t trouble yourself in the future.”
Sheng Mian felt as though she had been doused with a large bucket of ice water. The stares from around her felt like thorns in her back.
Her eyes suddenly turned red. Biting her lip, she muttered “Whatever,” and then fled in a hurry without looking back.
Gu Lanfeng didn’t even glance at her retreating figure.
He had been very considerate towards Sheng Mian in the past, but now, knowing her true nature, he found his previous actions particularly embarrassing.
It’s already quite good that he isn’t falling out with her. How could he possibly go back to how things were before…
Just when Sheng Mian was delivering breakfast and got slapped in the face¹ by Gu Lanfeng in public, on the other side, Ye Nanxun was walking towards Sheng Nuan’s class.
Looking at the paper bag in his hand, Ye Nanxun was actually feeling a bit hesitant.
His mother’s cooking skills were excellent, especially her dumplings, which was her specialty. However, when his mother asked him to bring some to Sheng Nuan as a token of gratitude, Ye Nanxun thought to himself that with Sheng Nuan’s family background, what kind of good food hadn’t she eaten? How could she find this ordinary food special?
Ye Nanxun didn’t have Sheng Nuan’s straightforwardness and called her outside the classroom.
When Sheng Nuan saw the bag Ye Nanxun was holding, she was curious. “What’s this?”
When she opened it and saw the delicate and fragrant dumplings inside, Sheng Nuan was immediately surprised, and without hesitation, she took one out and put it in her mouth.
“Mmm, it’s really delicious…”
As she chewed, she mumbled her praise, quickly pinching another one out.
“It’s made by Auntie, right? Her cooking is really good.”
Ye Nanxun subconsciously felt his lifted spirits finally relax, and then he pursed his lips and gave a soft ‘mm’.
The girl in front of him had her cheeks puffed out as she ate, her eyes round and sparkling like a hamster munching on food. As she ate, she didn’t forget to shower the food with praise, saying, “It’s so delicious.”
Sheng Nuan was completely unreserved: “If Auntie makes anything delicious in the future, don’t forget to bring me a portion. Please thank her for me.”
“Don’t you thank me?”
He brought it…
But as soon as the words left his mouth, Ye Nanxun froze for a moment, his expression momentarily stiffening.
Sheng Nuan, however, was oblivious to this, and with a practiced eye roll, said, “It’s not like you made it. You’re just the delivery guy at best.”
Ye Nanxun laughed in exasperation, even forgetting the uncomfortableness he had felt from his own unusual behavior…
Sheng Mian, feeling utterly embarrassed, angry, and helpless after being publicly rejected by Gu Lanfeng, directed all her resentment towards Sheng Nuan.
It was all because of Sheng Nuan. If Sheng Nuan hadn’t schemed against her, she wouldn’t have lost such a great opportunity, wouldn’t have been stared at with contempt, and wouldn’t have been treated coldly by Gu Lanfeng.
As she walked past the floor where Sheng Nuan’s classroom was located, full of resentment, she glanced over and was surprised to see Sheng Nuan actually spending time with Ye Nanxun.
The boy who was firmly ranked as the top student in the grade, handsome yet aloof and never interacting with others, was standing right across from Sheng Nuan… While Sheng Nuan, oblivious and carefree, ate, he watched her silently with an exceptionally gentle expression.
Sheng Mian’s grip on the stair railing tightened.
Seeing herself in such a predicament while Sheng Nuan was getting so close to the always solitary top student… Coupled with the increasing positive remarks about Sheng Nuan on school forums and groups over the past few days, Sheng Mian’s heart sank further, and a strong chill rose in her eyes.
Ye Nanxun was on his way back after delivering the food when he was stopped by Sheng Mian halfway.
He frowned slightly and was about to move aside, but Sheng Mian stepped forward and blocked his path. “What, are you and Sheng Nuan close now? Have you become friends?”
Ye Nanxun’s expression remained indifferent. “It’s none of your business.”
Last time, Sheng Mian had helped him, and he had admitted at the disciplinary office that he was manipulated by Sheng Nuan. Although she had refused to accept the medical expenses the first time, he had still paid them again the second time. So… he had no obligation to accept her questioning.
Ye Nanxun looked up. “Please move aside.”
Sheng Mian smirked. “Oh? Have you really started seeing her as a friend? Ye Nanxun, I heard your mother had surgery. So, did Sheng Nuan give you the money for it?”
Ye Nanxun remained silent.
Sheng Mian took out her phone and, with a half-smile, sent him a few saved recordings. She waved the phone at him and said, “Listen to these.”
Ye Nanxun looked at her expressionlessly and ignored her.
Sheng Mian sneered, opened the audio files on her phone, and the next moment, Sheng Nuan’s voice came through, sounding very haughty.
“Ye Nanxuan? Acting like a stray dog every day, is he worthy of being compared to Gu Lanfeng?”
…
“Prideful? Just him? I want to see if he can still be proud when poverty makes him bend his back.”
…
“Help him? Don’t make me laugh. I’m just toying with and humiliating him. Don’t you think it’s fun?”
…
“What part-time jobs? I’ve had someone handle all of them. Besides me, he has nowhere else to make money. What else does he expect to do if he doesn’t listen to me?”
The audio contained a conversation between Sheng Nuan and a few others, with every word dripping with contempt and malice towards him…
Sheng Mian successfully saw Ye Nanxun’s expression suddenly turn cold, and then she sneered, saying sarcastically, “Aren’t you quite grateful to her? She previously got rid of all your part-time jobs and forced you to be her errand boy while she humiliated you… Now, guess what she wants to do by making you incur a massive debt, hmm?”
Sheng Mian’s words were deliberate and sharp. “Don’t tell me you actually believe she’s helping you out of kindness?”
Ye Nanxun slowly lifted his gaze.
Sheng Mian said with a smirk, “Don’t forget why she targeted you in the first place…”
- For those unfamiliar with the term, don’t be scared haha; Gu Lanfeng didn’t literally slap her. Sheng Mian experience of what you call ‘face-slapping’ is when someone who was previously arrogant is publicly proven wrong or embarrassed. This term comes up a lot in novels. ↵
