Sheng Nuan walked quickly through a crowded area, her thoughts racing as she pulled out her phone, intending to call the police. However, she realized that the pursuers hadn’t shown themselves yet, and if she called, they would likely retreat.
As she racked her brain for a solution, a figure suddenly appeared in front of her.
“It looks like you’re in some trouble…”
Sheng Nuan looked up and saw Shang Yue standing there, a leisurely smile on his face.
She instinctively glanced back.
“They haven’t left yet,” Shang Yue said calmly. “Would you like to take refuge at my place? Consider it repayment for your help last time.”
Sheng Nuan hesitated for a moment, then nodded. “Okay…”
She followed Shang Yue to his car. The people following her were relentless and tried to catch up, but soon, several cars on the road disrupted their pursuit, and they lost track of Sheng Nuan.
Shang Yue lived in a high-security villa complex. After bringing Sheng Nuan to a villa deep within the area, he smiled and said, “I rarely come here, so feel free to stay. It’s much safer here than elsewhere.”
Sheng Nuan breathed a sigh of relief and thanked him.
Shang Yue wasn’t in a hurry. After handing her a bottle of water, he sat on the sofa and asked, “Who are those people following you?”
Sheng Nuan looked at him. “Don’t you know?”
Shang Yue chuckled. “Alright, I do.”
He dropped the act and clicked his tongue. “Leslie Norman is already in a coma, and his legal heir, Sheng Lingshan, has returned to Y Country. So why is Stephen still fixated on you?”
Stephen was Sheng Nuan’s uncle and the one fighting Leslie for power.
Sheng Nuan sneered, “It shows that Stephen isn’t in a great position himself.”
Shang Yue raised his eyebrows, a smile of admiration flashing in his eyes.
Sheng Nuan was right. In the original plot, after Leslie’s accident, the original Sheng Nuan wasn’t specifically targeted after Leslie’s accident because Leslie was truly beyond saving at that point. Stephen was confident he could control everything and saw no need to risk attacking a lone girl in a domestic country.
But this time, thanks to her warning, Leslie was prepared. Even though he’s in a coma now, the many contingencies he set up are giving Stephen a headache, which is why Stephen turned his attention to Sheng Nuan in the country… a bit crazy, really.
“I can only offer help within my capabilities,” Shang Yue said with a smile, though his eyes remained cold and rational. “If your uncle’s people come knocking, I won’t confront them head-on for your sake.”
He added, “I never do anything unprofitable.”
Sheng Nuan smirked. “Also because you’re struggling with your own troubles right now, right?”
Shang Yue was slightly taken aback, then smiled…
Sheng Nuan was spot on. His idiot older brother had become desperate after their ally Leslie’s accident, and his recent behavior had been erratic. Shang Yue had to juggle his own plans while dealing with that idiot, leaving him a bit stretched thin.
But it wouldn’t be long before he could put everything to an end… that idiot would end up where idiots belonged.
After a moment, Shang Yue stood up and left.
The next day, Sheng Nuan called her teacher to request sick leave and made sure to inform her “boyfriend” too, saying she was staying at a hotel and hadn’t gone home, just to avoid Ye Nanxun being targeted if he came to find her.
For the next few days, Sheng Nuan didn’t leave the house at all, ordering takeout for all her meals. However, on the fourth day of staying in Shang Yue’s villa, her bank card was frozen.
Fortunately, she was prepared and had deposited several thousand yuan to her WeChat account, plus some cash she had withdrawn.
The frozen account indicated that things might not be going well for Leslie in Y Country… Customer service could only provide surface-level information, nothing useful. With no other options, Sheng Nuan continued to lay low.
After a week of hiding out, Sheng Nuan was starting to go stir-crazy. Just then, Ye Nanxun messaged her, inviting her to dinner at the Ye family home.
Sheng Nuan had customer service confirm that the pursuers had temporarily backed off. After a moment of hesitation, she agreed, then used a phone Shang Yue had left behind to call a taxi service to take her downstairs.
The taxi drove her to the entrance of the Ye family’s neighborhood. Sheng Nuan got out and walked into the neighborhood, dressed heavily with a baseball cap on.
She felt like she was going to lose her mind if she didn’t get out of that house…
She thought it would be just another meal at the Ye family’s house, but when she knocked and entered, she was stunned to see a birthday cake with candles in the dimly lit room, curtains drawn.
It suddenly dawned on her that today was the original Sheng Nuan’s birthday.
Ye Nanxun looked awkward, but after being nudged by Ye Wan, he joined in singing her a happy birthday song… When the lights came on, Sheng Nuan snapped back to reality, feeling a mix of emotions.
“Nuan Nuan, A’nan mentioned your mom is on a business trip, and you’ve been home alone, not feeling well. So I thought I’d throw you a birthday party. I hope you don’t mind,” Ye Wan said. Ye Wan also wanted to thank Sheng Nuan for helping her family, and thinking that Sheng Nuan, this little girl, would be spending it alone on her birthday, she felt a little sorry.
Ye Nanxun looked a bit uncomfortable but came over and handed her a flower. “Happy Birthday.”
“Just one? You’re so stingy,” Sheng Nuan teased.
Ye Nanxun raised an eyebrow. “It’s the last one from the garden.”
Sheng Nuan huffed. “Did you pick it from the side of the road?”
Ye Nanxun’s lips curled slightly…
Sheng Nuan pouted but quietly thanked him, and at the same time couldn’t help feeling a bit guilty.
This was the simplest birthday she’d ever had in both her past and present lives… but it was also the most heartfelt.
She knew that Ye Nanxun and his mother were grateful for her help, but they didn’t know that her goal was just to complete her task, without much emotional investment. It made her feel a bit guilty…
After eating cake and dinner, Sheng Nuan didn’t stay long. She left the Ye family home and returned to Shang Yue’s villa. But just after she got back, something happened at the Ye family’s house.
Ye Nanxun finished cleaning the kitchen and came out to find his mother slumped in her wheelchair with her head tilted, blood trickling from her nose…
His face turned pale as picked up his phone and dialed 120¹ with shaky hands…
……
The next afternoon, Ye Nanxuan left the hospital and went to the underground boxing ring alone.
The doctor’s helpless sigh echoed in his ears…
“Second hemorrhage, plus intracranial infection. We need to perform another craniotomy, but… you should think about it carefully…”
According to the doctor, with his mother’s second hemorrhage and intracranial infection, even if she underwent another craniotomy, the prognosis would not be very good.
A second craniotomy carried high risks, was expensive, and had a poor prognosis. But if a second operation was not performed, his mother wouldn’t have long to live… so the doctor advised him to think it over carefully.
No matter what, Ye Nanxun would not give up on his mother.
When he was a child, his mother picked him up and never thought of giving up on him no matter how hard it was, even if she had to remain single her whole life. So how could he possibly give up on his own mother…
When Ye Nanxun arrived at the fight club, he didn’t see Sister Lin so he signed in and headed to the back to change and get ready.
But as he reached the locker room, someone blocked his path.
It was one of the men who often ran gambling rings at the club…
The man tossed two stacks of cash at Ye Nanxun’s feet. “Tonight, fight according to what Mr. Yun wants. You’ll get another thirty thousand after it’s over.”
Ye Nanxun hesitated, then slowly looked at the two stacks of money…
