- Chapter 36 - The Heiress Will Not Be a Cannon Fodder 036
“Someone with the surname Sheng?” Old Master Qing turned his head. “Do you know her?”
Ye Nanxun’s eyes lit up for a moment, but then, remembering something, his expression gradually calmed.
He replied, “I’ll go see her. I’ll come back to find you later, Grandpa.”
Old Master Qing nodded, “Go ahead…”
Ye Nanxun turned and went downstairs.
Sheng Nuan sat in the lounge area, waiting for Ye Nanxun while idly observing the banquet scene… The Qing family had deep roots and connections with prominent figures and high-ranking officials, so the banquet was naturally high-end.
Sheng Nuan’s own family had been nouveau riche and had few opportunities to attend such banquets of this level. But the original host came from a conglomerate in Y Country and had seen it all before. Sheng Nuan inherited those memories, so she found the surroundings somewhat… unimpressive.
Someone had already noticed Sheng Nuan sitting alone, and before long, a man dressed like a human model but acting like a dog¹ walked toward her, holding a wine glass.
“Miss, why are you sitting all alone?”
Towards this type of greasy-haired, powdered-face man with lecherous eyes, Sheng Nuan couldn’t even be bothered to brush him off.
But she ignored him, yet the man didn’t mind at all. He continued to approach and even tried to sit close to her. “Miss, my name is Wang Xing. Pengyun Technology is my family’s company. What’s your surname? You look unfamiliar…”
Seeing that the other person was about to sit down, Sheng Nuan looked up and spat out a single word: “Scram.”
Wang Xing was taken aback, then chuckled angrily.
He sneered and said, “Refusing to drink the toast, only to be forced to drink a forfeit², huh?”
In this capital’s social circle, everyone basically knew each other. Seeing that Sheng Nuan looked unfamiliar and was sitting alone, clearly neglected, he became certain that she had no significant background and was most likely here just to crash the banquet, which was why he dared to be so forward.
“I’m offering you a drink, and I advise you not to refuse a good face when it’s given!”
Wang Xing directly handed over the wine glass, sneering, his eyes full of ill intent.
Sheng Nuan looked up, reached out to take the glass… then, right in the midst of Wang Xing’s smug expression, she threw the wine in his face. “Idiot!”
Drenched in wine, Wang Xing instantly flew into a rage and raised his hand to grab Sheng Nuan. “You b—!”
Before he could finish his insult, Sheng Nuan grabbed his outstretched hand, yanked it hard, and then slapped him across the face.
With a loud slap, everyone around was startled and turned to look in their direction.
Wang Xing was kicked in the stomach, clutching his face with one hand and his stomach with the other. Humiliated and furious, he struggled to stand up, gritting his teeth and cursing, “I’ll kill you…”
Just then, as he swung his hand, someone grabbed it from behind and forcefully flung it away.
Wang Xing cursed under his breath and turned around, ready to unleash a torrent of insults. But as soon as he saw the pale-faced young man in a black suit standing behind him, along with the Qing family butler standing respectfully by his side, he suddenly realized who it was. His expression instantly changed. “Young Master Qing.”
Wang Xing wanted to say something to defend himself, but before he could open his mouth, he heard the newly returned young master of the Qing family coldly utter a single word: “Scram.”
Wang Xing, with a guilty conscience, didn’t dare cause any more trouble. Forcing a smile, he fled in embarrassment under the disdainful gazes of those around him.
The Qing family butler lowered his head and apologized quietly, “Young Master, it was my mistake allowing such a person in.”
Ye Nanxun waved his hand, and the Qing family butler respectfully withdrew.
Now, only Sheng Nuan and Ye Nanxun were left in the lounge area.
Sheng Nuan had been thinking about what to say for a long time, but when she saw Ye Nanxun, she instantly forgot what she had planned to say and subconsciously asked, “What’s the matter with you? You look terrible. Are you sick?”
Ye Nanxun’s eyes flickered, but he didn’t respond.
His expression was icy, and Sheng Nuan snapped back to her senses, remembering why she was here.
When she had just entered, she asked customer service to check Ye Nanxun’s blackening value… 80.
Because of this, she felt a bit nervous. She carefully looked at Ye Nanxun and softly explained, “A few days ago, I didn’t mean to treat you like that. My family was dealing with some issues, and I had no choice but to ask him for help, so I had to listen to him… I really didn’t mean to humiliate you, I swear.”
After saying that, she quickly added, “But I know I was wrong, so I came to apologize to you as soon as I could. Ye Nanxun, I’m really sorry.”
Ye Nanxun’s eyelashes trembled slightly, and after a moment of silence, he finally spoke… but his tone was utterly indifferent. “Are you done?”
Sheng Nuan was momentarily stunned. “Y-Yes, I’m done.”
Ye Nanxun curled his lips slightly and said, “Did you really think a few words from you would make me forgive you and let you toy with me again? If so, you’re thinking too highly of yourself…”
Sheng Nuan’s heart sank, and she felt a bit embarrassed.
At that moment, a well-dressed, refined middle-aged man approached. “A’Nan.”
A cold light flashed in Ye Nanxun’s eyes as he turned to greet him politely, “Second Uncle.”
This was Qing Yanchuan, Ye Nanxun’s uncle and the man currently managing the Qing family business… Although the culprit behind Ye Nanxun’s poisoning hadn’t been identified, Old Master Qing’s people had uncovered some leads.
Qing Yanchuan couldn’t escape suspicion.
In the past, Qing Yanchuan was just a younger brother who closely followed Ye Nanxun’s father, Qing Yancheng. Later, when something happened to Qing Yancheng, the old man, distrusting outsiders, gradually promoted Qing Yanchuan step by step.
But seeing too much can cloud a person’s judgment, leading some to believe that the things they manage on behalf of others should rightfully belong to them.
No one wanted Ye Nanxun, the suddenly returned legitimate heir, to disappear more than Qing Yanchuan.
Yet, no matter what he had done behind the scenes or how many schemes he had, Qing Yanchuan’s expression was one of affectionate concern, as if he were the most caring elder towards Ye Nanxun: “A’Nan, this young lady is…”
Ye Nanxun’s face remained emotionless. “Just a self-important fool.”
Sheng Nuan choked on her words and sulked, “I didn’t even insult you before…”
She didn’t finish her sentence before Ye Nanxun impatiently interrupted her: “Why would you think I’d forgive you after being toyed with and humiliated by you time and time again… Oh right, was it because I borrowed money from you?”
His tone was cold and distant. “Don’t worry, I’ll have someone transfer both the principal and interest to you shortly, so you can leave now, right?”
People around them had begun to look in their direction.
Sheng Nuan felt incredibly embarrassed. “I’m not…”
Ye Nanxun interrupted again, “Oh, and those words you said to me before, I’m returning them to you. People should have self-awareness and basic decency. Don’t you think?”
Sheng Nuan’s body stiffened, and she finally fell silent.
Qing Yanchuan chuckled, “A’Nan, there’s no need to be so harsh with a girl…”
Ye Nanxun pressed his lips together, his tone cold. “Second Uncle, you don’t know what kind of person she is.”
At that moment, Sheng Nuan finally gave up…
It seemed that dealing with the blackening issue wasn’t going to work for the time being. Thankfully, Leslie was making a move, so at least she didn’t have to worry about her own life anymore.
She’ll think of a way in the future, there’s plenty of time ahead.
With a reluctant smile, she looked at Ye Nanxun. “I’ll be going then, Ye Nanxun…”
Before turning around, she cautiously reiterated, “I really didn’t come here for the money.”
Ye Nanxun remained expressionless as Sheng Nuan turned away, dejected, and walked out.
Once outside the Qing residence, Sheng Nuan was about to hail a cab when she spotted a familiar Maybach parked across the street.
It was Shang Yue.
As Shang Yue stepped out of the car and started walking toward her, several figures suddenly appeared, blocking his path.
They were there to protect Sheng Nuan.
At the same time, another car pulled up beside Sheng Nuan… it was Swat.
Swat got out of the car, came around, and opened the door for Sheng Nuan. “Miss Norman, the plane is ready. I’ve been sent to take you home.”
But just then, customer service suddenly warned, “Host, be careful! Stephen’s men are here.”
In the next instant, a burst of blood bloomed from Swat’s chest…
After being shot, Swat fell to the ground but, with fierce determination, got up and fired his gun. At that moment, another car screeched to a halt beside Sheng Nuan.
Across the street, Shang Yue’s bodyguards noticed something was wrong and began firing as they rushed over, but Sheng Nuan was already grabbed and thrown into the car by a hulking man…
She struggled and kicked with all her strength, but her efforts were as ineffective as a chick’s to her captors.
With a bang, the car door slammed shut… Her hands were cuffed behind her back, and she could only watch as Swat and his team desperately chased after the vehicle…
Across the street, Shang Yue’s expression changed drastically. He drove after the vehicle of the kidnappers while simultaneously calling to mobilize his people.
At the same time, the person Ye Nanxun had secretly sent to keep an eye on Sheng Nuan rushed back into the banquet hall, his face serious.
Ye Nanxun was standing by Old Master Qing’s side, talking to someone. The person hurried over to him and spoke in a low voice.
“Young Master, the young lady you asked me to watch has been kidnapped by armed men…”
Ye Nanxun froze. The wine glass slipped from his hand and shattered on the floor…
