- Chapter 376 - My Fiancé Is Definitely Not a Little Pitiful Person 038
After the great battle at Mount Beimang, order on the Imperial Star quickly began to recover.
Because the fighting was confined to the Mount Beimang area, the rest of the Imperial Star was essentially unaffected, and the overall impact was not too great.
However, the bigger change was in people’s minds.
When danger arrived, the ruling class did not even have the courage to fight back—or rather, they refused to take any risks. They fled the Imperial Star, taking large numbers of elite troops with them and leaving nearly a hundred million civilians to the Zerg.
If not for the troops who stayed behind and fought to the death, if not for that sudden group of wildcards, if not for the rebels turning the tide and completely annihilating the Zerg warships… the Imperial Star would likely have fallen into chaos and slaughter.
Just like the people of Qingling Star or Pisces Star, they would have either died miserably under the Zerg’s claws or hidden and scurried like rats and ants, clinging to life.
Even more terrifying was what the Qin family and their supporters had done… sacrificing tens of millions of lives for a single gold mine.
Every time people recalled what their Alliance Monarch Qin Zhengde told the Crown Prince in that audio: the Alliance has so many people, so many people… it made them shudder.
A Crown Prince raised with this kind of teachings could never become a ruler who valued civilian lives!
Now, the Alliance had entered a new era…
It was also at this time that many learned the rebels had already infiltrated every corner of the Alliance.
The reason the rebels could grow so powerful was not unrelated to the Qin family’s corrupt and cold-blooded rule.
Everyone has a family. No one wanted their loved ones to follow in the footsteps of Qingling Star and Pisces Star’s citizens…
When Sheng Siyang followed Sheng Qingfeng into the Blue Palace, he still felt a bit dazed.
He had known for some time that Huo Ling was with the rebels, but he never imagined Huo Ling was their leader… or, as of now, the new ruler of the Alliance.
He could hardly believe that the man who had lowered his head and endured bullying in his home would lead the rebels to depose the Qin family.
Sheng Siyang and his father had come to attend a commendation ceremony that honored the Sheng family’s great contributions in resisting the Zerg invasion. Of course, these contributions only included Sheng Siyang and his sister leading their “security personnel” against the Zerg. Their provision of fighter planes and armor to the rebels would not be mentioned.
After all, having dealings with the rebels before the Qin family’s fall was easy fodder for criticism. The Sheng family’s contributions were already enough without making that public.
Sheng Siyang walked inside with a mind full of conflicting emotions. Passing by a conference room, through the half-open glass door, he caught a glimpse of Huo Ling in a black uniform seated at the head of the table, holding a few sheets of paper. He read them calmly and spoke in a voice devoid of emotion.
“Qin Zhengde, execute.”
“Zhou Hao, execute.”
“Zhao Nanke, execute.”
……
“Chu Qing, execute.”
He stated no charges or reasons. After each name, only the cold word “execute” fell from his lips. Yet no one below offered any objection.
Seeing Huo Ling’s eerie demeanor, Sheng Siyang thought of how he used to call him a “damned dog,” and how earlier he had forced Huo Ling to tidy up his room. His heart sank, and his legs felt weak.
Noticing his son’s abnormality, Sheng Qingfeng asked with puzzlement, “What’s wrong?”
Sheng Siyang tugged at the corner of his mouth and asked hopefully, “Dad, when Huo Ling stayed in our home before… we didn’t treat him badly, did we?”
Sheng Qingfeng looked at his son in confusion. “How would I know how you treated him? Don’t you know it yourself?”
Sheng Siyang’s legs went weak and he forced a smile, “Yes, I know.”
Sheng Qingfeng continued, “Why do you look so awful? Something wrong?”
Sheng Siyang hurriedly shook his head, “No, nothing!”
Then he asked again, “Dad, when Huo Ling was staying with us, you could tell he was a decent person, right? Gentle and polite… He shouldn’t be some cold-blooded, ruthless man, right?”
Sheng Qingfeng gave his son a complicated look. “Do you think someone gentle and polite could so easily take the immense rebel force into his own hands?”
They sat down in the lounge, waiting for the commendation ceremony to start. Sheng Qingfeng, idle with nothing else to do, added, “There are plenty of vicious former interstellar pirates among the rebels, yet now they act like loyal dogs before him. Do you think a gentle and polite person could accomplish that?”
Sheng Siyang slumped into his chair with a numb face…
He might be done for!
The commendation ceremony was hosted by Duan Long, the former Police Director and now Defense Director, with Huo Ling merely sitting there. Huo Ling personally awarded medals to Sheng Qingfeng and Sheng Siyang.
When Huo Ling came to present Sheng Siyang’s medal, Sheng Siyang kept his face taut, eyes darting around, not daring to make direct eye contact. He held his breath, almost fainting from it.
Huo Ling’s eyes were full of meaning…
The awarding ceremony was broadcast live on the Alliance’s satellite channel. Originally, Sheng Nuan should have attended, but she did not want to, so she declined.
After the ceremony ended, Sheng Qingfeng and Sheng Siyang stayed on for the subsequent seminar, while Huo Ling and several other high-ranking officials left the conference room.
It was afternoon by the time Sheng Siyang returned home with a drooping head…
Mi Rong was sitting on the sofa eating fruit. Seeing his appearance, she was startled. “What’s wrong? How can you look like a wilted eggplant after receiving a commendation?”
Sheng Siyang sat down and let out a long sigh, “Mom, you wouldn’t understand… Huh? Who’s here?”
There were several gift boxes placed in the living room, and sounds came from the kitchen as if someone was busy there. Clearly, they had a guest.
Mi Rong said “Oh,” and answered, “Huo Ling…”
Sheng Siyang froze, instinctively asking, “What’s he doing here?”
“What else? He’s here to see your sister.”
Sheng Siyang leapt to his feet, completely forgetting his earlier worries. “Where is he? Mom, how can you let someone so questionable come see my sister at will…”
Mi Rong, half exasperated and half amused, said, “Stop, stop. Yang Yang, your sister is twenty years old, she’s not a child. I can see she doesn’t dislike Huo Ling. They’re both young, consenting adults. What are you fussing about?”
Sheng Siyang sat back down, dazed, as if suddenly realizing that his sister had grown up.
She was no longer that little girl in pigtails, all sweet and milky, who would run to him crying when she was bullied outside, calling him Big Brother so pitifully… She no longer needed his protection.
Sheng Siyang’s heart was full of sorrow, as if he were an old father realizing his daughter no longer needed him…
Mi Rong found it both funny and touching. She patted her son’s head. “I know you’ve taken care of her since childhood and cherished her. Yang Yang, look, your sister is now going to have a partner. What about you, when will you bring home a daughter-in-law for me?”
Sheng Siyang’s mouth twitched. “I’ll pass.”
Mi Rong raised an eyebrow. “How can you say that? The Su family called, the one from your blind date. They said their daughter wants to meet you again.”
Sheng Siyang’s head snapped up and he immediately waved his hand, “No no no, I don’t want a woman who just wants free meals…”
Mi Rong laughed. “Alright, alright, Mom won’t force you. Enough with that gloomy face. You’re young, don’t look like an old man, it hurts my eyes. Off you go.”
Feeling disliked, Sheng Siyang pursed his lips in grievance and left…
Upstairs, in Sheng Nuan’s room.
Sheng Nuan sat at her desk, Huo Ling sitting beside her.
“Look, the newest armor, with energy compensators… mmph… Huo…”
Sheng Nuan was cut off as Huo Ling pinched her chin and kissed her. She tried to evade him, laughing helplessly. “I’m trying to talk business with you.”
But Huo Ling clearly did not want to hear about business anymore, making a random excuse, “Nuan Nuan gave me new armor, and I have nothing to repay you with, so I will pledge myself to you…”
Before he could finish, he lifted her onto the desk and leaned in to kiss her again.
……
Amid their entangled breaths, Sheng Nuan teased him, “Why aren’t you touching me…”
Huo Ling’s voice was husky and strained, “I’m afraid I won’t be able to stop…”
It was his first official visit as a guest, and he did not want any mishaps.
Sheng Nuan muffled a laugh, and Huo Ling, both helpless and irritated, pressed her against the desk and kissed her again…
