In the quiet office, Sheng Nuan sat on the sofa, feeling a bit uneasy, while Ye Nanxun was at the water cooler across the room, pouring her a glass of water.
With his back to Sheng Nuan, the emotions in Ye Nanxun’s eyes were swirling, making it almost impossible for him to hold onto the lightweight paper cup.
Was he dreaming?
He had to be… otherwise, how could he possibly be seeing her?
So this is what she looks like all grown up—more beautiful than before… And she was still smiling at him, asking if he remembered her.
How could he forget? After so many nights of excruciating torment, how could he ever forget?
Boiling water overflowed from the paper cup, spilling onto his hand. A sharp pain surged through him, and Ye Nanxun’s hand trembled slightly, but at the same time, his eyes suddenly became even brighter.
So this was real… he wasn’t dreaming?
Barely managing to rein in the overwhelming tide of emotions, he turned and walked over, lowering his gaze as he placed the cup of water on the coffee table beside Sheng Nuan.
Sheng Nuan was about to thank him when she caught a glimpse of his reddened fingers and was immediately alarmed. “You burned yourself! Are you okay?”
The familiar tone full of concern caught Ye Nanxun off guard, almost making him tear up. He took a deep breath, lips pressed together. “I’m fine.”
He walked over and sat down on the sofa across from her, quietly watching her.
Sheng Nuan frowned, looking at his reddened fingers, and stood up, pulling him by the arm. “Rinse it under cold water, or it’ll hurt more.”
Without giving him a chance to refuse, she dragged Ye Nanxun over to the restroom in the office. Only then did it occur to her that they weren’t as close as they used to be.
Sheng Nuan snapped back to reality and quickly let go of his arm, feeling a little embarrassed.
However, Ye Nanxun’s expression remained gentle and docile, as if he had instantly reverted from a decisive young tycoon to the somber, poor boy who always hid behind a facade of meekness.
Obediently, he rinsed his hand under the cold water. Sheng Nuan let out a sigh of relief, then smiled sheepishly. “For a moment, I thought you didn’t recognize me just now.”
Ye Nanxun turned his head to look at her and replied softly, “How could I not?”
After a brief pause, he finally gathered the courage to speak. “These past few years…”
It was only then that Sheng Nuan remembered something. Feeling a bit embarrassed, she briefly explained how she had faked her death to avoid trouble.
Seeing Ye Nanxun’s silence, she felt a bit embarrassed and chuckled awkwardly. “Haha, so that’s how it went. Pretty embarrassing, huh? Dying and coming back to life, haha…”
Ye Nanxun’s eyes stung with heat.
So it was real—she was really okay. She was alive and well.
Sheng Nuan was used to being carefree, and with her memory of Ye Nanxun always being a boy of few words, she didn’t notice anything off. She rambled on, her chatter spilling forth, “I’ve heard about you. You’ve been amazing these past few years, managing the Qing family so well. Even my dad has praised you..”
Ye Nanxun felt a painful tightness in his chest.
So, she had always known about him, about where he was. Yet… she had never once sought him out.
Was she holding a grudge against him?
She must be. After all, she had come looking for him back then, only for him to publicly drive her away, and then something terrible happened… The fact that she was still standing here was due to sheer luck and heaven’s mercy. No matter how things turned out, he couldn’t erase what he had done back then.
Ye Nanxun turned off the faucet, looking at Sheng Nuan, who was so close to him, and softly said, “What happened back then was my fault…”
Before he could finish his sentence, memories of the time they spent together flooded his mind and the messages she left in the milk tea shop, all of it. His throat tightened, and he couldn’t continue.
Sheng Nuan thought he might be uncomfortable and quickly reassured him, “Oh, it’s all in the past. Besides, I was at fault back then too. Let’s just forget about it and move on…”
Ye Nanxun’s heart tightened with panic.
It’s all in the past?
Had everything between them already passed for her?… Was that why she thought it was only natural that he wouldn’t remember her?
Had she almost forgotten about him as well?…
The two of them returned to the sofa and sat down, neither of them speaking for a long while.
Sheng Nuan was restless and a bit nervous, because she found that when she saw Ye Nanxun in person, she still thought he was truly good-looking.
Back then, Zhao Yingzi and the others would always rave about how handsome different guys were, but to her, none of them compared to Ye Nanxun… Perhaps that’s why, back then, she had betrayed her conscience and ended up kissing him for real.
Over the years, she had occasionally heard about him and considered going to find him, but whenever she remembered how awkward their last meeting had been, along with his blackening value back then, she couldn’t bring herself to do it.
Now that things have finally settled well for him, why would she bring unnecessary trouble to him?
But in this moment, seeing him up close, Sheng Nuan still felt her heart wandering aimlessly and hopelessly, with an urge to climb the wall… All those little fresh meats like Xiao Ze suddenly seemed boring.
Sooner or later, she’ll have to face it.
Fearing she might have even worse thoughts if she stayed any longer, Sheng Nuan coughed awkwardly and stood up. “Well, if there’s nothing else, I’ll…”
“Leave your phone number,” Ye Nanxun suddenly said.
His eyes were downcast as he gently added, “In the future… keep in touch.”
Normally, when old classmates or friends met up, they would exchange contact information and say something polite like “keep in touch.” Sheng Nuan pursed her lips. “Uh, sure… keep in touch.”
She gave him her phone number, and Ye Nanxun immediately called her. She quickly saved his number, but just as she was about to put her phone away, she saw a notification for a new friend request on WeChat.
Across from her, Ye Nanxun softly said, “Let’s add each other on WeChat as well. It’ll be more convenient.”
Sheng Nuan nodded again. “Yeah, sure, it’s convenient.”
Ye Nanxun’s profile picture was a night scene, seemingly taken in a park. She glanced at it briefly, then locked her phone and put it away. With a chuckle, she said, “You’re probably very busy right now, so I won’t keep you.”
Ye Nanxun’s lips moved as if he was worried she might think him presumptuous, yet he was reluctant to part. In the end, he said with some difficulty, “I’ll see you off.”
Sheng Nuan mumbled a soft “okay.”
After all, it was normal for old classmates to walk each other out, right? Yes, that was it.
Ye Nanxun walked her all the way to the underground parking lot. Seeing the old, beat-up car she drove, he frowned slightly. “Are you having financial difficulties?”
Although it seemed unlikely, he couldn’t help but ask, worried, even if it meant being intrusive.
Sheng Nuan smiled. “No, I’m interning at a grassroots company, so I have to keep a low profile.”
Ye Nanxun finally nodded and smiled at her, saying, “Drive safely…”
“Mm-hmm. Bye-bye.”
Sheng Nuan started the car and drove off.
As she drove away, she couldn’t help but chat with customer service: “Hey, Ye Nanxun is really great. He doesn’t seem to hold a grudge against me at all!”
The system responded flatly, “Didn’t you already apologize back then?”
Sheng Nuan thought about it and agreed, but she still felt he was great. “Well, it was my fault back then. I should apologize. You see, once I apologized, he didn’t hold a grudge. Doesn’t that just show how nice he is?”
Customer service said it had nothing more to say.
“He’s way more handsome than Xiao Ze…”
Sheng Nuan clicked her tongue. “Much more handsome than Xu Ce too…”
She went through all the people on the wall in the past few months, and then she was sure that Ye Nanxun was the most handsome one.
“Ah, it would be great if I could be in a relationship again… but it seems out of the question.”
“He doesn’t seem like the type to go back to an ex.”
Such a shame…
The customer service, with a touch of petty satisfaction, secretly gloated: It wouldn’t reveal to the dog host that Ye Nanxun had stayed alone in the underground parking lot for a long time.
Who told her to call it customer service… it’s obviously a noble system!
As Sheng Nuan drove, her mind was swirling with mischievous thoughts, feeling a bit frustrated.
If only Ye Nanxun were still that poor, pitiful boy from before who had nothing. He is now a big boss, so this matter is very difficult to handle…
