Xiao Dingcheng, full of suspicion, instinctively reached out to take the box and see what the reward was. But in the next moment, he couldn’t pull it away… He then saw Sheng Nuan on the opposite side, gripping the box tightly with both hands, watching him with a wary and vigilant look.
Xiao Dingcheng was momentarily stunned, then he chuckled. “Are you worried that this Heir would covet such a small thing from you?”
Sheng Nuan felt a bit embarrassed, biting her lip reluctantly before letting go. Xiao Dingcheng opened the box and saw the gleaming, heavy gold bracelets inside.
Looking back up, he saw Sheng Nuan still staring at him anxiously, clearly worried he’d take them away. Xiao Dingcheng could neither laugh nor cry. “I never knew you were so fond of money.”
Sheng Nuan blushed and, without a word, snatched the box back from him and carefully put it away.
Xiao Dingcheng, half amused and half exasperated, said, “Relax, no one’s after your little stash… Come on, let’s go. You and Mian Mian need to pay your respects to the princess.”
Xiao Dingcheng started walking ahead, and Sheng Nuan immediately caught up, linking her arm through his. As they walked, she whispered, “Your Lordship, when we greet the princess today, do you think she’ll give us another reward?”
Xiao Dingcheng had met plenty of people greedy for money, but this was the first time he had encountered someone so openly displaying it, and surprisingly, it didn’t make him feel disgusted. Instead, he found it amusing for some reason.
He hummed. “Yes, she will.”
Just then, Xiao Dingcheng saw Liu Rumian approaching from the other side. He suddenly remembered something and turned to Sheng Nuan. “Nuan Nuan, Mian Mian is shy and introverted. When we’re in front of the princess, make sure to look after her.”
Sheng Nuan pressed her lips together and nodded vigorously, saying, “Husband, don’t worry. I will.”
On the opposite side, Liu Ruyan, supported by a maidservant, walked over like a delicate willow. As she drew near, she inevitably heard Sheng Nuan’s address.
Husband?
Liu Rumian’s face stiffened slightly, and her hand tightened around her handkerchief. Then she saw Sheng Nuan waving to her with great enthusiasm. “Sister Liu, Sister Liu, hello!”
For some reason, Liu Rumian found Sheng Nuan’s cheerful demeanor, as she clung to Xiao Dingcheng, rather eye-catching… She bit her lip discreetly and, upon approaching, showed Sheng Nuan a warm and gentle smile.
“Sister wasn’t feeling well this morning and got up a little late, which made you wait for too long…”
As Liu Rumian finished speaking, several maidservants nearby glanced over, both openly and discreetly, and even Xiao Dingcheng’s expression shifted slightly.
Anyone with a bit of insight could understand what Liu Rumian was implying: She had spent the night with Xiao Dingcheng, which was why she was unwell and had risen late.
For Sheng Nuan, who had entered the household on the same day, this was a blatant act of showing off, if not outright humiliation.
Xiao Dingcheng frowned slightly and looked at Liu Rumian, only to find her gazing at him with eyes full of accusation. When she glanced at Sheng Nuan, still holding his arm, he realized she was jealous.
Feeling both amused and helpless, Xiao Dingcheng discreetly pulled his arm away, a little concerned that Sheng Nuan might throw a fit over the situation… But then he realized that he was thinking too much.
Sheng Nuan seemed completely unaware of the hidden meaning in Liu Rumian’s words. Instead, she even asked concernedly, “Sister, are you feeling alright?”
Liu Rumian felt as if she was punching cotton, and forced a smile, saying, “It’s nothing.”
Sheng Nuan immediately went over and affectionately linked arms with her. “Come on then, let’s go see the princess. The princess is so beautiful, and she’s especially kind…”
Liu Rumian was both surprised and anxious. Could it be that Sheng Nuan hadn’t been tormented by the princess last night?
At the same time, she felt a little nervous… After all, it was her who had spent the wedding night with Xiao Dingcheng. If the princess had spared Sheng Nuan, would she be spared as well?
Liu Rumian bit her lip and glanced pitifully at Xiao Dingcheng. Xiao Dingcheng immediately spoke out, “Nuan Nuan, do you remember what I told you earlier?”
Sheng Nuan winked at him. “Don’t worry.”
Xiao Dingcheng then watched as Sheng Nuan and Liu Rumian walked ahead—one full of joy and energy, the other cautious and anxious… Subconsciously, his gaze lingered on Sheng Nuan’s back.
She was animatedly gesturing to Liu Rumian, clearly in high spirits, inexplicably making those who watched her feel relaxed and happy…
Before long, Sheng Nuan and Liu Rumian arrived at Jingluan Courtyard. As soon as they entered, Sheng Nuan spotted the little eunuch who had guided her the previous night and the palace maid Su Lan standing by the door.
“Good morning, Eunuch Gui,” she greeted the little eunuch cheerfully.
The little eunuch was momentarily taken aback and found himself at a loss for words as he looked at her…
If he had been born a few thousand years later, he might have understood that this type of person has what you’d call “social awesomeness syndrome”¹.
Sheng Nuan then turned to Su Lan with a bright smile. “Good morning, Su Gugu. Sister Liu and I are here to greet the princess and serve her tea.”
Sheng Nuan seemed genuinely thrilled, as if serving tea to the princess was the greatest form of joy. Su Lan almost failed to maintain her stern expression. After giving Sheng Nuan a long look, she went inside to announce their arrival.
A moment later, she came out. “Her Highness invites the two madams to come in.”
Seeing that Sheng Nuan seemed very casual, Liu Rumian mustered up her courage to look up as well, only to meet Su Lan’s icy gaze.
Her heart skipped a beat, and she quickly lowered her head, following Sheng Nuan inside. As they walked in, she heard Su Lan’s undisguised contempt in her voice.
“A worthless thing unfit to be seen.”
Liu Rumian immediately felt that the comment was directed at her… She clenched the handkerchief in her hand, biting her lip and keeping her head bowed.
As Sheng Nuan walked in, she saw Princess Lin’an reclining on the upper seat. In the bright daylight, she looked even more regal and noble than the night before, almost like a celestial goddess from heaven… Sheng Nuan couldn’t help but admire the sight.
It wasn’t until Su Lan coughed that Sheng Nuan snapped back to reality and moved to pull Liu Rumian into a bow.
The next moment, Princess Lin’an said softly, “Sheng Nuan, no need for courtesy.”
Sheng Nuan’s heart leapt with joy. Her rainbow farts² was really powerful.
Next to her, Liu Rumian’s heart was already freezing… Princess Lin’an had only excused Sheng Nuan from formalities but not her. Was she really targeting her?
Liu Rumian bit her lip and knelt down. As soon as she did, tears welled up in her eyes and started to fall.
Su Lan was immediately furious. She stepped forward and slapped Liu Rumian across the face. “You unlucky thing! Do you think greeting Her Highness is wronging you? You lowly thing, even bowing to Her Highness is a privilege for you… Someone, drag her out and slap her mouth.”
Sheng Nuan: Oh, oh…
Two old maidservants came in from outside, dragging Liu Rumian to the outer area. Soon after, the sound of slaps echoed through the air.
Sheng Nuan waited through a few loud “slaps” before she suddenly seemed to snap back to her senses, pretending to be frightened as she pleaded, “Your Highness, Princess, please spare Madam Liu?”
She carefully pleaded, “Madam Liu was wrong, but I ask the princess to forgive her this time, considering it’s only her first day in the manor and she’s not familiar with the rules…”
If it were in the past, Su Lan would have arranged a feast of slaps for Sheng Nuan as well.
But after last night, she understood that Her Highness had a different attitude toward this madam, so she didn’t dare to speak rashly. Instead, she looked up at Princess Lin’an, who lazily raised a hand and said, “Enough.”
Su Lan bowed and left the room. “Her Royal Highness is merciful and has spared you, you worthless thing.”
The sound of slaps outside finally stopped, leaving only Liu Rumian’s muffled sobs…
- social awesomeness syndrome (社交牛逼症) – a slang for someone bold or unrestrained in social contexts, to the point of being almost invincible in their confidence. It’s often used to poke fun at people who seem to have no fear of social awkwardness, embarrassment, or rejection, basically the opposite of social phobia. ↵
- rainbow farts – exaggerated, over-the-top flattery. ↵
T/N: I’ve changed the anchor footnotes style. Light mode peeps, how you doin? Haha. I’ve changed the color to fit the site’s theme and made the anchors bolder and a bit bigger. Tell me via Discord if you have trouble seeing them. Since I have to go through each chapter manually to change the styling, it’s also possible that I might’ve missed some. So holler me if you find any unchanged anchor/link colors. Thankssss~
