- Chapter 61 - The Humble Concubine Will Not Be a Cannon Fodder 011
Princess Lin’an?
Sheng Nuan was full of confusion, but also vaguely wary.
Although Her Royal Highness the Princess had not shown much malice towards her so far, it never hurts to be cautious.
It wasn’t until she stepped into Jingluan Courtyard and smelled the thick scent of medicine that she realized that Princess Lin’an was ill.
But she’s not a doctor, so what’s the logic in calling her when she’s sick?
Sheng Nuan complained in her heart but kept a look of concern and attentiveness on her face. “Your Highness isn’t feeling well? Have you seen a doctor? How are you now?”
As soon as the words fell, a slightly hoarse voice came from the room. “You’re so concerned about this Princess, yet why haven’t you come to pay respects these past few days?”
Sheng Nuan hurriedly apologized, “Last time I heard from Su Gugu that Your Highness prefers peace and quiet, so this concubine didn’t dare to disturb you rashly. If I had known that Your Highness was unwell, even if it meant being disfavored by the princess, I would certainly have come to attend to you.”
Beside her, Su Lan’s mouth twitched.
This concubine… she’s better at this than she is!
Sheng Nuan was a habitual rainbow farts giver, but she didn’t expect that as soon as she finished speaking, she heard Princess Lin’an say, “In that case, you will stay tonight to attend to my illness.”
Sheng Nuan: ……
She forced a smile. “This concubine couldn’t wish for more.”
Su Lan had already turned and left. Princess Lin’an slowly sat up on the bed and leaned back, calmly saying, “This Princess doesn’t like how you refer to yourself.”¹
Sheng Nuan was confused. “Huh?”
Princess Lin’an stared at her quietly. Despite her pale complexion from illness, she remained stunningly beautiful.
Sheng Nuan quickly came to her senses and went along with it. “I’ll change it in the future.”
She didn’t like to be called “concubine” either—damn concubine!…
Originally, Sheng Nuan felt that it was a headache to hear that she had to attend to the sick, but now, seeing such a stunning beauty up close, with a pale and sickly face, looking like she was in great need of care, she suddenly felt like she could handle it.
“Has Your Highness taken medicine yet?” she asked.
Just then, Su Lan came in with a bowl of medicine, handed it to Sheng Nuan, and left.
Sheng Nuan quickly held the bowl of medicine, stirring and blowing on it, then cautiously fed it to Princess Lin’an. “Your Highness, the medicine is ready.”
Sheng Nuan sat directly on the footstool by the bed, while Princess Lin’an sat on the bed, his head slightly lowered, quietly watching her… Realizing this was a perfect opportunity to hug this thigh, Sheng Nuan’s smile became even more sincere and caring. “Your Highness, be careful, it’s hot.”
The princess drank, and a bit of medicine dripped down the corner of her mouth.
Sheng Nuan was about to reach for a handkerchief, but Princess Lin’an had actually snatched her hand and wiped her mouth with it… Sheng Nuan was speechless, trying to ignore the medicine stains on her hand and repeatedly telling herself: she’s a princess.
After finally finishing the bowl of medicine, the princess calmly remarked, “It’s so bitter.”
Sheng Nuan immediately brought over a dish of candied fruit. “Your Highness, have some candied fruit.”
Princess Lin’an didn’t move, his slightly narrow eyes gazing at Sheng Nuan.
Sheng Nuan snapped back to reality and quickly picked up a piece of candied fruit, handing it over with a fawning smile. “Let me feed Your Highness…”
The esteemed Princess Lin’an finally opened his mouth to eat the candied fruit, but as he did, the tip of his tongue lightly brushed over Sheng Nuan’s fingers… Sheng Nuan was momentarily stunned.
The princess’s expression looked normal, as if he hadn’t realized it at all, but Sheng Nuan felt repulsed and had to suppress her reaction.
Saliva… gross… even if she’s a princess, saliva is still saliva… this would drive a mysophobic patient to death…
Not wanting to have her fingers licked again, Sheng Nuan pretended to put down the candied fruit, but Princess Lin’an suddenly spoke. “It’s very sweet, try some.”
Before Sheng Nuan could refuse, Princess Lin’an had already graciously taken a piece of candied fruit and offered it to her.
Sheng Nuan could only hold the candied fruit in one hand while reaching out with the other, but Princess Lin’an wouldn’t let go… After a moment of hesitation, she steeled herself and reluctantly opened her mouth.
Princess Lin’an’s gaze grew a little dangerous as he stared quietly at her.
Sheng Nuan thought that Princess Lin’an had noticed her reluctance, so she didn’t dare hesitate any longer. She leaned in and took the initiative to take the candied fruit from Princess Lin’an’s fingertips… But just then, Princess Lin’an suddenly reached out, pinched her chin, and pressed his fingertips firmly against her lips.
Sheng Nuan winced in pain, almost tearing up. Princess Lin’an squinted slightly before finally letting go.
Fortunately, after feeding him the medicine and rinsing his mouth, the princess didn’t torment her further. She lay quietly on the bed, but before Sheng Nuan could breathe a sigh of relief, the golden branch and jade leaf spoke out again.
“I can’t sleep. Sing me a song…”
Sheng Nuan had been acting all day—first playing with Xiao Dingcheng, then with the Old Madam, and now serving the princess. She was so tired her eyes could barely stay open, but she forced herself to prop them open and lay by the bed, humming ‘Fireflies Fly.’
The more she hummed, the heavier her eyelids became, her voice growing softer. She didn’t notice Princess Lin’an’s pale face staring intently at her, his gaze deep and penetrating.
Sure enough, it’s you…
This song… it’s been more than ten years, and he’s only ever heard it from her…
Sheng Nuan, utterly exhausted, lay slumped by the bedside in a restless sleep. In her half-awake state, she suddenly felt herself being lifted onto the bed, with someone lying beside her.
But she was so exhausted, and the presence of the person beside her had such a clean and refreshing scent that it felt like lying amidst snow-covered pines on a mountain peak. She felt inexplicably at ease and continued to drift into a deep sleep.
In her drowsy state, she heard a raspy voice near her ear, “Sister, the fragrance on your body is pleasant. What is it?”
“Xiaoyu… sleep,” Sheng Nuan mumbled groggily.
The person beside her seemed to breathe heavier, their breath warm against her neck. In a low voice, they said, “Sister lied to me. Tell me… how should I punish you?”
A faint aroma of incense lingered in the room, masked by the smell of medicine. Under the influence of that incense, Sheng Nuan drifted into an even deeper sleep…
The next morning, Sheng Nuan was awakened by the chirping of birds outside the window.
In the moment she woke up, she was still a bit disoriented. It wasn’t until she opened her eyes and saw the unfamiliar, opulent room that she suddenly snapped back to reality and sat up abruptly.
Across from her, by the window, Princess Lin’an was calmly sitting and brushing his hair in front of a mirror.
Sheng Nuan was a little dumbfounded…
Had she actually slept in the princess’s bed?
Did she crawl up there because she was too tired?
But that wasn’t the most important thing—the real issue was that she seemed to have had a dream… first about Xiaoyu, and then… the dream changed.
In the dream, she was back in her original world, hanging out with her shady friends and flirting with some young, handsome guy who looked like a student working part-time. She even brought him back to a hotel.
The little fresh meat seemed innocent, but was actually very… skilled… and then… things got very explicit.
She had actually had an erotic dream while sleeping in the princess’s bed…
She hadn’t made any strange sounds, right?
This is really… so shameful.
Thankfully, judging by the princess’s demeanor, she didn’t seem to have noticed anything… Sheng Nuan sat up and was about to speak when she suddenly realized her collar was a bit loose and disheveled. She looked down in a daze.
In the mirror, the coldly beautiful Princess Lin’an’s eyes briefly flashed with panic for a brief moment before quickly returning to their previous composure. She parted her red lips and said coldly, “You came to serve me, yet you slept so soundly.”
Sheng Nuan was immediately distracted. As she tugged at her clothes and tried to arrange them, she awkwardly chuckled, “Hehe, I, I guess I was just too sleepy. Your Highness is really kind-hearted to let me share the bed with you…”
“It’s good that you know.”
Princess Lin’an turned to look at her with a faint, lingering gaze. “Come to serve me often in the future, and this Princess will treat you even better.”
At that moment, Su Lan walked in from outside, holding a box in her hands… Inside were three lustrous pearls, each the size of a pigeon’s egg.
“Since you served well yesterday, I will reward you.”
Princess Lin’an spoke calmly.
Sheng Nuan’s eyes lit up, and she quickly climbed down from the bed. “Thank you, Your Highness. The Princess is truly the best person in the world…”
Princess Lin’an lowered his gaze slightly, a faint smile tugging at the corner of his lips. “Am I…”
- She’s referring to how Sheng Nuan calls herself 妾身 (qiè shēn) which translates to ‘this Concubine’ / ‘this humble servant’. Sheng Nuan and Liu Rumian actually refers to themselves as qie shen all along but the translation uses ‘I’ for a better flow and to avoid repetition.
This is similar to how Princess Lin’an refers to herself as 本宫 (běn gōng) which means ‘this Princess’ or ‘this Palace’. It’s used by female royals to refer to themselves respectfully. It’s also how Xiao Dingcheng refers to himself as 本世子 (běn shìzǐ) which means ‘this Heir.’ Ben shizi could also mean ‘this Crown Prince’. ↵
T/N: My brain has a hard time computing that the princess is a man. I tried to clear up the pronouns when switching POVs but do tell me via discord if you find any inconsistencies.
