When Sheng Nuan entered the room, she saw Princess Lin’an wearing a loose robe, her black hair flowing freely, appearing both lazy and alluring.
She couldn’t help but be dazzled. The next moment, Princess Lin’an coolly lifted his gaze. “Does it look good?”
Sheng Nuan immediately sat next to the princess, holding a sugar snowball in her hands, grinning while flattering her, “Your Royal Highness is as beautiful as a celestial being, of course.”
Princess Lin’an raised an eyebrow lightly.
“Princess, try this. It’s sweet and sour. It’s delicious…” Sheng Nuan passed the snowball candy over, fearing the other person might ask to be fed again.
Fortunately, this time, Princess Lin’an condescended to reach out and take one. Sheng Nuan quickly grabbed another and stuffed it into her own mouth. “Let’s eat together…”
While eating, she sighed, “It’s so delicious. I can’t believe that after so many years, it still tastes the same.”
Sheng Nuan had originally just tried it on a whim, but she hadn’t expected that the shop she visited during her timeline mix-up was still there, though it had a new owner.
Princess Lin’an’s eyelashes fluttered slightly as he glanced sideways at her. “Isn’t the shop owner a young man? Could it have been open for many years?”
Sheng Nuan casually hummed, “It used to be his father’s.”
Princess Lin’an’s tone turned wistful. “His father died ten years ago. Ten years ago, Miss Sheng was only a little girl of seven or eight… Impressive that you remember so clearly?”
Sheng Nuan froze for a moment, then laughed dryly, “Yeah, I’ve loved eating their sugar snowballs since I was a child.”
Princess Lin’an’s eyes darkened. “Is that so?”
Sheng Nuan quickly regained her senses. “How does the princess know so much?”
Princess Lin’an curved her lips in a half-smile. “I know much more than that…”
“Oh.”
Sheng Nuan didn’t pay attention to Princess Lin’an’s expression and found herself lost in thought.
She actually wanted to ask Princess Lin’an about Xiaoyu, but she couldn’t explain how she knew about the unfavored Xiaoyu in the Cold Palace.
She had even asked customer service, but it told her the data from the timeline error had been cleared and there was no trace of anything.
Thinking about the girl who appeared cold and stubborn on the surface but was deeply reliant on her, Sheng Nuan felt a sense of gloom wash over her…
“Are you still staying here tonight?” Princess Lin’an suddenly asked.
Sheng Nuan suddenly came to her senses and quickly smiled, declining, “No, no. I don’t sleep well, I’m afraid I’ll disturb the princess.”
Princess Lin’an didn’t insist and, before leaving, rewarded her with a golden hairpin.
Sheng Nuan’s face immediately lit up with joy. “Thank you, Your Highness. I’ll come see you again tomorrow…”
Princess Lin’an gazed at her with a faint look. “Alright.”
Sheng Nuan walked back with the jewelry box in hand, humming a tune, feeling that her little life was becoming more and more promising.
Suddenly remembering something, she asked customer service, “What’s Xiao Dingcheng’s favorability score now?”
Customer service replied: “35.”
Sheng Nuan pursed her lips. “Alright…”
But she also knew that for someone like Xiao Dingcheng, the proud son of heaven who had everything he wanted since childhood, winning his heart wouldn’t be an easy task.
Sheng Nuan became curious. “So, what’s Xiao Dingcheng’s favorability towards Liu Rumian?”
After a quick check, customer service responded: “80.”
Sheng Nuan was even more surprised this time… Seeing how much he valued Liu Rumian, she had assumed it was near 100, but it turned out to be only 80…
The next morning, as Old Madam Xiao sat down at the dining table and was about to say she had no appetite and didn’t want to eat, she suddenly spotted a small plate of dark red pastries placed in front of her.
She hadn’t seen them before and thought it was a new snack from the kitchen, so she picked one up to try… The taste was a perfect balance of sour and sweet, without being too cloying, and surprisingly suited her palate.
After eating two pieces in a row, the Old Madam nodded approvingly. “The cook who made these pastries is quite good.”
Gui Momo hesitated for a moment before saying, “Old Madam, this sour jujube cake was bought by Miss Sheng yesterday when she returned from her visit to her family. It was delivered last night.”
The Old Madam was slightly surprised, then she snorted, “She certainly knows how to curry favor…”
Her tone seemed to carry some disdain, but shortly after, she picked up another piece to eat.
Seeing the Old Madam’s rare good appetite, Gui Momo couldn’t help but smile slightly, her impression of the young lady from the Sheng family improving considerably.
On the other side, Sheng Nuan didn’t go to see Old Madam Xiao again as she might have expected… She knew that these elderly ladies in deep courtyards were full of suspicion. If she acted too warm, the Old Madam might suspect she had ulterior motives.
Although that was indeed the case…
A few days later, Sheng Nuan learned from customer service that Xiao Dingcheng had bought a cat for Liu Rumian, and she immediately realized her role as the shield would soon come into play again.
In fact, Xiao Dingcheng’s reason for buying the cat was that Liu Rumian had complained about mice in her courtyard, saying they scared her so much that she couldn’t sleep at night and pestered Xiao Dingcheng to keep her company every night.
But Xiao Dingcheng was, after all, the heir apparent, and while he didn’t consummate his marriage with Princess Lin’an, he couldn’t spend every night in his concubine’s room. So, he specially bought a beautiful Persian cat for Liu Rumian.
Liu Rumian didn’t really care about the mice and didn’t like the cat, which had grown up and was unfriendly. Moreover, she felt resentful that Xiao Dingcheng wouldn’t keep her company, so she simply tossed the cat aside and ignored it.
In the original storyline, Liu Rumian didn’t mistreat the cat, but this time, the cat went hungry for several days and, taking advantage of the servants’ unawareness, escaped from Feixu Courtyard a few days earlier than in the original plot.
That day, Xiao Dingcheng’s cousin, Princess Chaoyang¹, happened to be visiting Princess Consort Dong Qingshuang².
Princess Chaoyang was already married to the Heir Apparent to Prince Huai as his primary consort. When she visited the Duke of Zhenbei’s manor, she had been entrusted by Prince Huai to accompany his pregnant secondary consort for some leisure.
To show her kindness and generosity, the Princess Consort treated the Huai Prince’s Secondary Consort with great care, holding her hand and chatting warmly.
The cat first dashed into the Princess Consort’s courtyard and killed her pet bird, then it was chased by the servants all the way to the back garden.
By the lakeside pavilion, the Princess Consort was holding the Huai Prince’s Secondary Consort’s hand and chatting affectionately when they suddenly heard a commotion… The next moment, they saw a large white cat with its fur standing on end, charging straight toward them.
The white cat let out a piercing “woo-wa woo-wa” cry, its fur bristling as it charged straight in the direction of the Princess Consort and the Huai Prince’s Secondary Consort.
The Prince Huai’s Secondary Consort was so startled that her face turned pale, and she instinctively reached to cover her belly as she stepped back, only to trip over the bench behind her… Just as both the Secondary Consort and the Princess Consort were about to fall out of the pavilion and into the lake, a figure swiftly appeared.
Sheng Nuan, passing by, saw a pregnant woman about to be pounced on by the mad cat and fall into the lake. Without thinking, she flew over, grabbed the pregnant woman to steady her, and with a backhanded motion, threw the cat away. At the same time, the luxuriously dressed woman beside the pregnant consort fell into the lake with a splash.
The servants around them were hurriedly shouting in panic, “Princess Consort! The Princess Consort has fallen into the lake…”
The pregnant woman, supported by Sheng Nuan, looked terrified and tightly grasped her, her expression somewhat dazed.
So, this heroine saved her, but stood by and watched the Princess Consort fall into the lake?
- Princess Chaoyang holds the title of Jùnzhǔ (郡主), a lower title compared to Gōngzhǔ (公主), a title reserved for women in the imperial family like Princess Lin’an who is the emperor’s direct lineage. Junzhu typically refers to the daughter of a prince or a high-ranking noble. As the primary wife of a prince, Chaoyang is also the Princess Consort. ↵
- As the primary wife of a Wangye (王爷), Dong Qingshuang holds the title Wangfei (王妃), which translates to ‘Princess Consort.’ When the author uses just ‘Princess Consort’, it refers to Dong Qingshuang.
Dong Qingshuang’s husband holds the title Zhenbei Wang, which means ‘King/Prince/Duke Who Guards the North.’ I translated his title as Duke to avoid confusion with the ruling monarch.
As the Heir Apparent (世子, Shìzǐ), Xiao Dingcheng is in line to inherit the title ‘Wangye.’ Hope that clears things up. ↵
