- Chapter 66 - The Humble Concubine Will Not Be a Cannon Fodder 016
Liu Rumian finally persuaded Xiao Dingcheng to let her join the incense-offering trip… After all, they had entered the manor on the same day, and if Sheng Nuan was taken to offer incense by the Old Madam and the Princess Consort, while she was left behind, how could she hold her head up in the manor in the future?
When Xiao Dingcheng learned that Sheng Nuan was accompanying the Old Madam, he initially wanted to have Liu Rumian join as well. However, Gui Momo blocked him, stating that the Old Madam disliked unnecessary people tagging along.
The term “unnecessary people” nearly made Liu Rumian cry from humiliation on the spot.
In the end, Xiao Dingcheng had no choice but to arrange a separate carriage for Liu Rumian, though it was naturally not as grand as the ones for the Old Madam, the Princess Consort, and the Princess… Following behind those large, luxurious carriages, hers looked like a servant’s.
Liu Rumian felt humiliated but had no choice but to endure it. If she got upset and refused to go, it would only give others a reason to target her.
When they arrived at the temple, Liu Rumian, still suppressing her feelings, tried to serve the Old Madam, only to be completely ignored as the Old Madam only brought Sheng Nuan with her. Liu Rumian was not even given a glance.
She then forced herself to approach the Princess, but the Princess was even colder, saying she wanted to be alone.
In the end, Liu Rumian gathered her courage and tried to see the Princess, hoping at the very least she wouldn’t have to ride the servant-like carriage back… However, she was stopped by Su Gugu without even getting to see the Princess’s face.
Just like that, on the way back, Liu Rumian was still nestled in that small carriage, gnashing her teeth in hatred and shedding tears… even though the carriage was actually spacious enough for her.
But when the convoy was traveling through the forest between Huguo Temple and Shengjing City, assassins attacked…
By the time Sheng Nuan received the warning from customer service, the convoy had already entered the ambush zone.
Since this event wasn’t part of her mission in the original plot, customer service hadn’t checked ahead of time, only issuing an emergency alert once danger struck.
Sheng Nuan didn’t have time to curse the unreliable customer service. Instinctively, she pressed the Old Madam’s head down, forcing her to lower herself… The Old Madam was startled and furious, thinking Sheng Nuan had gone mad, but the next moment, the sound of arrows whizzing through the air was heard.
A thick, sharp arrowhead pierced through the side of the carriage, revealing the sharp tip protruding inside. The Old Madam was so shocked that her expression immediately changed.
“Stay down and don’t move.”
Sheng Nuan felt her scalp tingle. She quickly instructed while dragging Gui Momo over to lie down beside the Old Madam.
“Don’t worry about me, protect the Old Madam…”
Gui Momo wanted to struggle, but Sheng Nuan firmly pressed her down without giving her a chance to resist.
She covered the two elderly women with a quilt from the carriage, then took apart the wooden table inside and used the two planks to block the sides.
“Hold the boards and don’t move.”
After giving the order, Sheng Nuan lifted the curtain and leaped out… In just that brief moment, the outside had already turned into a hell on earth.
First came a barrage of siege crossbows, raining down with deadly force. The outermost guards were hit and fell from their horses before they could even react. Then came a dense hail of arrows.
Xiao Dingcheng’s face darkened when he saw the siege crossbows.
Having been tempered in the military, he did not panic. While directing the remaining guards to protect the female members of the household and flee immediately, he arranged for a dozen skilled fighters to head into the nearby mountains and engage the attackers.
After several rounds of arrows, a group of black-clad assassins emerged from the woods… Their goal was to kill, and they weren’t about to let Zhenbei Manor’s carriages escape unharmed.
Seeing the black-clad assailants closing in, Xiao Dingcheng immediately led his men to confront them, buying time for the women to escape behind him.
“Cheng’er! Cheng’er!” the Princess Consort shouted repeatedly, but she was tightly held by the head maid, who dragged her back into the carriage.
“Princess Consort, you can’t go out. If you do, it will only distract the Heir Apparent.”
The Princess Consort froze for a moment, then came to her senses. Forcing back her tears, she shouted, “Hurry! Get us out of here, quickly!”
She knew that the faster the women escaped to safety, the sooner her son could be freed from the battle.
The carriages moved forward one by one. The assassins, occupied with Xiao Dingcheng, didn’t break through to chase the carriages. Instead, they surrounded him.
From her perch on the carriage frame, Sheng Nuan saw this and immediately realized that the assassins were targeting Xiao Dingcheng. The ambush on the carriages had been a ploy to force Xiao Dingcheng to stay behind and cover the retreat.
Now, with part of the guards scattered to escort the female family members, Xiao Dingcheng was left with only a handful of men.
Sheng Nuan asked customer service, “In the original plot, he’s alive and well. He shouldn’t die today, right?”
Customer service stammered, “Host, I’ve just checked. The assassination didn’t happen on this day in the original plot, so the outcome is uncertain.”
Sheng Nuan was momentarily dumbfounded.
In other words, Xiao Dingcheng might not survive… and if he died, her mission would fail.
She cursed under her breath and told the coachman, “Go faster! Get the Old Madam back safely. I’m going to assist the Heir Apparent.”
Before her words could even settle, she gracefully leaped out.
By now, most of Xiao Dingcheng’s guards had fallen one by one.
His face was cold and grim. He knew this ambush was directed at him… but why?
Why would someone want to kill him? And to use siege crossbows. Who could be that insane?
“Heir Apparent, run!”
The only five remaining guards, prepared to fight to the death, urged Xiao Dingcheng to flee in unison.
But it was no longer a matter of whether he wanted to leave, but whether he could leave…
As the black-clad assassins launched another round of attack, the remaining guards were injured in quick succession. Xiao Dingcheng, outnumbered, could barely defend himself. Before he could react, a longsword thrust toward him from behind… by the time he realized it, it was too late to dodge.
He tried to twist away to avoid a fatal blow, but just as the sword was about to pierce him, a figure flashed in from the side, swiftly deflecting the assassin’s longsword with a flick of their hand.
When he saw who it was, Xiao Dingcheng was stunned. “Nuan Nuan…”
It was actually Sheng Nuan.
She was still dressed in her pale moon-colored gown, now stained with blood. After parrying the assassin’s sword with one strike, she rushed to Xiao Dingcheng’s side and said hurriedly, “Husband, you must go.”
As she spoke, she swept her sword across, forcing back the black-clad men attacking the three remaining guards. “Scatter and escape!”
As soon as she finished speaking, she grabbed Xiao Dingcheng, and leapt onto the nearest horse beside them…
The two of them rode away on horseback, while the black-clad figures scattered to search for horses and pursue them.
Xiao Dingcheng, seated behind Sheng Nuan, was bleeding profusely from a deep wound in his chest. Yet, despite the pain, his heart felt soft and hot.
In that dangerous moment, she had actually came back…
He knew she knew martial arts, but she was still just a woman. No one would have blamed her if she had simply escaped with the other female members… But she still came back for him.
Even though he had been surrounded by assassins.
In the stories and songs, there are plenty of tales about life and death promises and unwavering loyalty, but Xiao Dingcheng had never believed in them.
He had never believed that someone would value another person’s life over their own. After all, when someone dies, nothing remains… But now, he believed.
Just then, they heard hoofbeats approaching from behind… The assassins were catching up.
Xiao Dingcheng’s vision was blurring from blood loss. He realized that the horse carrying both of them couldn’t run fast enough… Just as he thought this, Sheng Nuan suddenly pulled the reins, stopping the horse. Then, before Xiao Dingcheng could react, she dragged him off the horse.
He was dazed, and the next moment, Sheng Nuan stripped off his outer robe.
Xiao Dingcheng suddenly realized what she was planning and was horrified. “Nuan Nuan…”
“Don’t make a sound. I’ll be fine on my own.”
Sheng Nuan donned Xiao Dingcheng’s outer robe, quickly tied up her hair, and pushed him into hiding. “Husband, stay hidden.”
She looked at Xiao Dingcheng, her lips pressed together. Then, she said slowly, “Husband, as long as you’re safe, I’ll be content.”
At the same time, she instructed customer service, “There should be wind here…”
Suddenly, the mountain wind picked up, rustling the falling leaves.
Sheng Nuan gave Xiao Dingcheng one last deep look, mounted the horse, and rode off…
“Nuan Nuan!” Xiao Dingcheng’s eyes were red with emotion, but he could do nothing. He gritted his teeth, slid down the slope, and hid himself in the thick underbrush.
He couldn’t let Sheng Nuan’s sacrifice be in vain.
Moments later, the sound of hoofbeats grew closer…
“She’s ahead! Catch her!”
One of the assassins shouted.
The next moment, the sound of galloping horses passed over the road above, continuing straight ahead without stopping.
As Sheng Nuan rode forward, she excitedly asked customer service, “How was my performance? Was it very deep and sorrowful? I swear I’m a natural-born actress!”
Customer service: Xiao Dingcheng even cried… the host has no heart!
Meanwhile, in the carriage, Su Lan was tightly holding onto Princess Lin’an. “Your Highness, you really can’t go.”
Su Lan’s eyes were filled with confusion and urgency as she tried to dissuade her. “Your Highness, she’s just a concubine in the manor, you—”
Princess Lin’an’s eyes lowered coldly. “Let go.”
Su Lan froze, and then she heard her princess say, “She is mine…”
