- Chapter 71 - The Humble Concubine Will Not Be a Cannon Fodder 021
The assassins suddenly launched an attack. The surrounding women screamed in terror, their cries echoing chaotically. Boats on the river frantically tried to change direction to avoid the area, colliding in the confusion.
Amidst the screams, Sheng Nuan sidestepped an incoming sword, reaching out to grab the arm of another swordsman, and with a sudden burst of strength, yanked him forward. She snatched his sword and, in one swift motion, drove it into his chest.
One of the assassins let out a scream and fell into the water, while the other, seeing this, suddenly froze in shock, clearly not expecting such a turn of events. In the next moment, without a second thought, he turned and fled.
Sheng Nuan immediately gave chase.
As she pursued him, she asked customer service to investigate the mastermind behind the attack and soon discovered that it was Liu Rumian.
Xiao Dingcheng’s recent change in attitude toward Sheng Nuan had put a lot of pressure on Liu Rumian, especially when Xiao Dingcheng accompanied Sheng Nuan to her family’s home, nearly driving Liu Rumian insane.
Xiao Dingcheng had promised her that after entering the manor, he would only favor her. How long had it been since then… How long?
When she discovered she was pregnant, overjoyed, she sent word for Xiao Dingcheng to return to the estate, but at the same time, she secretly had Wen’er go to find her elder brother, hoping to take this opportunity to have Sheng Nuan abducted.
Liu Ruyuan’s brother was a debauched illegitimate son who eats, drinks, frequents brothels, and gambles, lacking any knowledge or skills. He associates with shady people all day long.
What Liu Rumian asked Wen’er to do was to have her eldest brother, Liu Shaobin, kidnap Sheng Nuan to scare her and teach her a lesson… But deep down, Liu Rumian knew best what kind of character her eldest brother truly had.
She knew that as long as he saw Sheng Nuan, her lecherous brother would not be able to resist… By then, if Sheng Nuan were sullied, she would definitely have no place to stand in the manor.
But Liu Rumian had clearly underestimated Sheng Nuan’s combat abilities… The people Liu Shaobin hired were also a bunch of three-legged cats¹. In just one encounter, she took out one of them.
Sheng Nuan sneered coldly and curled her lips.
Liu Rumian… It seems she’s been too gentle with her in the past!
The black-clad assassin darted down the street in a panic, cursing his damned employer: They said she was a woman who couldn’t even truss a chicken, meant to be taken back for some fun… But who the hell is playing whom?
The next moment, everything went black as he was kicked onto a rooftop.
Turning back, he saw the beautiful young lady smiling sweetly at him. “Keep running?”
The assassin was close to tears and kept begging for mercy, “I don’t dare, Aunt! I was wrong! Please spare my life, I was also deceived…”
Sheng Nuan let out a casual “Oh”. “By whom?”
The assassin’s eyes darted nervously. “If I tell you, will you spare my life?”
Sheng Nuan nodded. “I’ll consider it.”
“It was Liu Shaobin! Although he had someone else make the arrangements, I saw it myself. He’s the one who hired us to capture you. Great Aunt, I swear I’m telling the truth! Please, spare me! I have an elderly mother over eighty and a young child at home waiting to be fed…”
Sheng Nuan clicked her tongue and marveled. “An eighty-year-old mother… You look like you’re only in your early twenties. It’s really not easy for your mother to have given birth to you at sixty.”
The man in black’s expression stiffened, and then a cold flash of light crossed his vision. A scream followed as he clutched his arm, trembling from the pain of his tendons being severed.
“You! You said you’d let me go!”
Sheng Nuan blinked. “I said I’d consider it… and this is the result after considering.”
With that, she kicked him off the roof. “I’ll spare your miserable life. Don’t let me see you again.”
Finally, she tossed aside the bloodstained sword with a flick of her wrist and turned to leave.
But just at that moment, she suddenly froze…
Not far away, a figure entered an inn. That was… Xiaoyu?
Princess Lin’an was dressed very low-key, wearing a cloak with a hood. However, when Sheng Nuan glanced over casually just moments ago, the wind had briefly lifted the hood… She couldn’t be mistaken, that was indeed Xiaoyu!
What was Xiaoyu doing, sneaking around late at night?
Sheng Nuan wasn’t one to meddle in others’ business, but it depended on the person. Since she had no immediate plans to return, she decided to crouch on the rooftop and keep an eye on things.
Soon, she realized something was off.
Not long after Xiaoyu entered, a few suspicious-looking men slipped into the inn as well.
Those people spread out, going in and out at irregular intervals. If it were anyone else, they surely wouldn’t have noticed, but Sheng Nuan had been keeping a close eye, and soon realized something wasn’t right.
Initially, she thought these people might not be related to Xiaoyu, but after another hour passed and fewer pedestrians remained on the streets while Xiaoyu still hadn’t come out, Sheng Nuan began to feel anxious.
Could something have happened?
After a brief hesitation, she discreetly descended from the rooftop and made her way toward the inn.
Because the mysterious people who had entered earlier seemed to have some skill, she didn’t want to cause a misunderstanding or stir up trouble. Instead of sneaking in, she boldly walked straight into the inn.
The first floor was an open hall, and she could see everything at a glance. She headed straight for the second floor.
The second floor was full of private rooms. As soon as Sheng Nuan reached the top of the stairs, she asked customer service to help locate which room Xiaoyu was in… Customer service quickly told her that Princess Lin’an had entered the second room from the left. The problem was, there were no longer any detectable data readings for Princess Lin’an in that room.
Sheng Nuan froze. “What do you mean, undetectable data readings?”
Customer service explained: Under normal circumstances, when data disappears, it indicates the person is dead. No detectable data means the person is either near death or has already died. However, this isn’t a 100% accurate reflection. Further data analysis is required to determine the exact cause.
Sheng Nuan was stunned.
Near death? Dead?
She suddenly remembered that in the original plot, Princess Lin’an was publicly declared to have died of illness after the downfall of the Xiao family. And the Xiao family’s downfall occurred shortly after Liu Rumian became pregnant.
Since the timing of previous events had shifted… could it be that something had happened to Xiaoyu earlier than expected?
With that thought, Sheng Nuan felt a chill run down her spine and almost rushed into the private room immediately.
But seeing the silent room, Sheng Nuan gritted her teeth and held back, turning away instead…
Moments later, she knocked out a qin² player who had just exited another room, hid him, and then, carrying the qin, knocked on the door to the room Princess Lin’an had entered.
“Knock, knock, knock.”
Sheng Nuan raised her hand and knocked.
Inside the room, the previously barely audible sounds abruptly halted, plunging everything into silence. In the next moment, the door to the private room swung open from the inside.
Two men dressed in nondescript gray clothing, looking like bodyguards, stood in the doorway. Their gazes were cold and hostile, and their voices were laced with menace. “What do you want?”
Sheng Nuan put on a nervous yet fawning smile. “This slave was invited to come and perform for the esteemed guests.”
One of the bodyguards spoke coldly, “We didn’t order a musician.”
Sheng Nuan feigned surprise. “Oh? Really? The guests in the Rising Sun Room on the second floor told me to come here.”
She hesitated for a moment, then added in a small voice, “It costs money for carriages, horses, and attendants to come here. Even if you don’t want the performance, you still need to pay half the fee…”
The bodyguard’s eyes flashed with murderous intent, but just then, an elderly voice called out.
“Let her in.”
The threatening bodyguards immediately stepped aside.
Sheng Nuan felt anxious and hesitant, but in the end, she still stepped inside, carrying her qin…
She knew it could be dangerous and even thought about turning back, but then she considered that if Xiaoyu was really waiting for her to save her… turning away now would be leaving the little girl she had once been so close to in mortal danger.
As soon as she entered, the door slammed shut behind her.
Sheng Nuan walked past a screen that blocked the entrance from view, and when she saw the scene inside, her footsteps faltered…
