- Chapter 21 - She Wants to Possess Her
Arriving at the company, Song Qingxing had little to do beyond discussing her upcoming role in the web drama with her manager.
“Qingxing, I tried to persuade them, but our boss isn’t keen on you taking this web drama.”
Song Qingxing raised an eyebrow.
That doesn’t make sense.
Didn’t the company plan to invest in it?
If they’re investing, why wouldn’t they support me?
“Why? You’ve read the script—it has real potential. Why won’t they let me take the role?”
She had naively believed that her rebirth would change everything, but now she realized that rebirth alone couldn’t solve all her problems.
“It’s not that I don’t want you to take it. The company has more promising newcomers. For someone of your status to waste time on something like this would be a waste.”
Old Chen lit a cigarette, something he rarely did in front of Song Qingxing. This time, however, he lit one with unusual deliberation.
His voice raspy, he explained, “You’re the company’s cash cow. Every minute you spend brings in massive profits. What if this web drama flops? Even if it makes money, it won’t reach the returns the company expects…”
Song Qingxing dug her fingernails into her palm, nearly drawing bl00d.
Heh…Â She’d thought her rebirth would change everything. But life wasn’t a smooth ride. It seemed the company bore a significant part of the blame for her rapid downfall in her previous life.
But I’m no longer the Song Qingxing who let the company lead me by the nose.
Song Qingxing propped her feet up, her white sneakers resting on the manager’s mahogany desk.
In private, Song Qingxing rarely wore heels. She couldn’t understand why so many people wore them regularly, knowing they could deform their feet over time.
So, aside from formal events or acting roles that required them, Song Qingxing usually stuck to comfortable flats. The insoles of her flats were exceptionally soft, allowing her to walk over ten kilometers without any pain or blisters.
Old Chen seemed taken aback. The Song Qingxing who usually reasoned with him was now adopting such a brazen posture.
“Old man… no, Old Chen,” she said. “I think you’re missing a few things.”
“Since I chose this drama, I’m going to act in it. So what if the company invested? I can always go to Xie Jingcheng.”
The cigarette slipped from Old Chen’s fingers and landed on the mahogany table. By the time he reacted, the acrid smell of burning wood filled his nostrils.
A small pit had been scorched into his desk.
“Did you think I was crazy?” Song Qingxing demanded. “Going to such lengths to curry favor with her?”
Old Chen remained speechless.
He hadn’t seen Song Qingxing unleash such an aura in ages. She only resorted to pounding the table, pointing at her nose, and berating him like this when she was absolutely furious.
Old Chen couldn’t understand it.
It was just a campus drama directed by some rookie.
A web drama destined for the lowest-tier streaming platforms—how popular could it possibly become?
He couldn’t fathom Song Qingxing’s obsession. He’d read the script himself; it was decent, but was it worth sacrificing everything for?
Despite his confusion, Song Qingxing’s unwavering stance left him no choice but to report to the company’s shareholders.
Her status had changed dramatically. Before, she was merely the company’s top salesperson, and the company retained the right to decide whether to greenlight projects.
But now, she was on the verge of becoming a member of a wealthy family.
They couldn’t afford to take her lightly.
As Song Qingxing stepped out of the company’s main entrance, her heart was still pounding wildly.
Sometimes, putting on a show came with a price. She had no idea how the company’s boss would react to her actions.
If all else fails, I’ll just go to Xie Jingcheng, she thought. After all, she seems like a proper and upright person.
Song Qingxing couldn’t help but think this.
She needed to carve out a wide path for her own destiny, and that meant no longer sinking deeper into this quagmire.
As darkness fell, Song Qingxing finally checked her phone. The screen showed 8:30 PM—she realized she had been arguing with her manager for far longer than she’d realized.
Song Qingxing sighed.
I hope Xie Jingcheng isn’t angry with me, she thought. I really didn’t mean to stand her up.
Just as she took a step forward, the door of a black car parked downstairs opened, and Xie Jingcheng emerged.
“Were you held up by work?” Xie Jingcheng asked. Only then did Song Qingxing notice the delicate, transparent plastic box she was carrying, tied with a red velvet ribbon. Inside was an exquisitely crafted cake, layered with blueberry jam and refreshing fruits, and dusted with powdered sugar.
“Mm-hmm,” Song Qingxing replied, walking over.
Looking around, Song Qingxing noticed the driver, who always wore white gloves, was nowhere to be seen in the driver’s seat.
“I drove myself here,” Xie Jingcheng explained. She disliked having someone follow her around 24/7.
“I asked your assistant. She said you have a sweet tooth but can’t indulge too often because of your figure.”
“So I bought a small one. Have a few bites, and I’ll finish the rest. That way, it won’t go to waste.”
Though indulging in sweets felt sinful, they did help ease her bad mood.
Song Qingxing hadn’t expected to hit a wall at work only to find a sliver of warmth in Xie Jingcheng’s kindness. Her heart swelled with gratitude.
She got into the car.
Xie Jingcheng turned on the headlights, which cast a warm, amber glow on their faces.
Through the thin plastic wrap, Song Qingxing could already smell the cake’s sweet aroma.
Xie Jingcheng handed her a fork.
The plastic fork felt surprisingly sturdy.
“You try it first.”
In Xie Jingcheng’s mind, owning a pet meant taking full responsibility, not abandoning it like a worn-out shoe after the initial novelty wore off.
Besides, Song Qingxing wasn’t just some pet.
She felt something for her—a stirring in her heart, a mad possessiveness.
Xie Jingcheng was a woman who knew exactly what she wanted.
From the moment she first laid eyes on the real Song Qingxing, an indescribable desire had taken root in her mind, growing wildly with each passing moment.
Though she hadn’t initially intended to completely possess her.
But now…
Xie Jingcheng’s eyes narrowed slightly as she watched Song Qingxing’s vibrant pink lips gently close around the cake. Forbidden thoughts already stirred in her heart.
If I’m just a little kinder to her, she won’t be able to leave me. She’ll become completely dependent on me, belonging solely to me. Then I can possess her without restraint.
The voice echoed relentlessly in her mind.
Xie Jingcheng found the idea absurd, yet she couldn’t suppress it.
However, her chaotic thoughts were abruptly interrupted by a soft sob.
Song Qingxing was still holding the cake in her mouth, but tears streamed down her face like pearls from a broken string.
Xie Jingcheng panicked for a moment before hastily grabbing a tissue.
“Why are you crying? Is the cake really that bad?”
For a moment, Xie Jingcheng doubted herself, wondering if she’d somehow picked the worst-tasting cake the shop had to offer.
That shouldn’t be possible.
This cake shop was a well-established chain known for its consistent quality control.
