- Chapter 27 - Never Forgive the Wicked
The car finally fell silent. Song Qingxing looked at the blocked number, finally letting out a sigh of relief. She had never heard anyone curse so viciously in her life.
The caller’s attitude was arrogant and condescending, threatening her to break up with Xie Jingcheng right from the start.
As if!
If Xie Jingcheng had ever been involved with this person, or even dated them, she would have made it public. Xie Jingcheng was a responsible person, not one of those so-called “scummy men” or “scummy women” who flirt and run, or who forget about you the moment they’re done.
Xie Jingcheng had clearly overheard the conversation. Her hearing was sharp, and the car’s enclosed space made it impossible to miss.
“I’m sorry for causing you trouble,” Xie Jingcheng said, her voice tinged with shame. She had known An Wenqing since childhood. Their families were of similar status, but their personalities couldn’t have been more different.
An Wenqing was a haughty young miss who looked down on everyone. Growing up, her parents were too busy to pay her much attention, and the housekeeper and nannies didn’t dare get too close.
An Wenqing was often sent to the Xie Family.
Over time, the two girls became friends. As they grew older, An Wenqing dated several men and women, but eventually found them all boring.
Xie Jingcheng turned her gaze to Song Qingxing.
Song Qingxing had declared that childhood friends were the perfect match and launched a passionate pursuit. Xie Jingcheng found this utterly absurd.
If childhood friends were truly the ideal match, she would have been with An Wenqing back in college. Why wait until now?
“She’s my childhood friend. Our parents are friends too,” Xie Jingcheng explained.
“She thinks she’s in love with me, but I think she’s just mistaking friendship for romance.”
Xie Jingcheng steered the car into the underground parking garage of the apartment building. This wasn’t her usual residence, and the garage was filled with luxury cars.
It was easy to imagine that Xie Jingcheng’s neighbors were all high-quality men and women.
After parking, Xie Jingcheng opened the car door.
Song Qingxing was about to get out herself when the door was pulled open. Xie Jingcheng stood outside, extending her soft, warm palm.
“Come on, let’s go together. This garage can be a bit confusing.”
High-end architecture often featured bizarre layouts, and anyone unfamiliar with the place could easily get lost.
Song Qingxing placed her hand in Xie Jingcheng’s palm.
I’ve been through too much today, she thought. I should just wash up and go to bed early.
They hadn’t walked more than a few steps when they encountered a man approaching them. His beard was unkempt, dark circles shadowed his eyes, and even the whites of his eyes were bloodshot.
“I’m sorry, Xie Jingcheng… I was wrong!” Peng Zhi’en dropped to his knees with a thud, his pleading gaze shifting to Song Qingxing.
“Song Qingxing, I shouldn’t have hired someone to attack you. It was foolish of me…”
As he spoke, he began slapping his own face violently, the sickening sound echoing through the underground garage. His cheeks quickly swelled, bl00d trickling from the corner of his mouth—a clear sign of the brutal force he was using against himself.
This man is truly formidable, Song Qingxing thought. I can’t even bring myself to cut my own finger with a knife.
If she hadn’t endured so much in her previous life, Song Qingxing would have been terrified by this display of madness. After all, she had never encountered such a deranged person before.
But in her past life, she had witnessed every kind of monster and demon imaginable.
So, while Peng Zhi’en’s frenzied behavior was unsettling, she was able to maintain a degree of composure.
As expected, having seen the world helps one maintain composure.
Peng Zhi’en’s methods were indeed more ruthless than those of his peers in the industry. However, ever since he hired someone to throw coffee on Song Qingxing, the head of the Xie Family had learned of his actions.
Though Peng Zhi’en’s public image hadn’t completely collapsed—he could still accept variety show appearances and promote his films to build hype—the problem lay elsewhere.
From the day Xie Jingcheng was hospitalized, Peng Zhi’en never received another film or television drama offer.
Variety shows remained an option, but he couldn’t afford to turn them down.
Initially, Peng Zhi’en wasn’t worried, thinking he could rely on his connections with directors in the industry to pull some strings.
Or he could lower his salary and outcompete the newcomers.
But trouble kept piling up. Creditors repeatedly came demanding repayment of his debts, even though the due dates hadn’t arrived.
Even his hotpot chain, once thriving, began to falter. Within a mere two weeks, several branches were exposed for hygiene violations.
How could Peng Zhi’en not understand what was happening?
The only reason he hadn’t faced consequences yet was because Xie Jingcheng and Song Qingxing’s film hadn’t been released.
Once the film premiered, he would face an unprecedented disaster, likely far worse than a mere ban.
“Enough.”
“What’s the point of ambushing people in the garage?”
Xie Jingcheng lowered his head, his voice icy. Peng Zhi’en should have considered the consequences when he targeted Song Qingxing.
Now it was his turn to be targeted.
“I’m truly remorseful,” Peng Zhi’en pleaded, tears streaming down his face, snot clinging to his beard as he sniffled repeatedly. The sight made Song Qingxing’s stomach churn.
“Qingxing, do you want to forgive him?”
Unexpectedly, Xie Jingcheng didn’t simply ignore Peng Zhi’en and walk past as he usually would. Instead, he turned to Song Qingxing beside him and asked for her opinion.
Even though he was the one who had been burned.
But that was because Xie Jingcheng had protected Song Qingxing. Peng Zhi’en’s target had always been her.
“Why would I forgive him? He burned you, not me.”
At first, Song Qingxing found it strange, but when she realized what was happening, she couldn’t help but feel touched. A sugar daddy who would actually ask for his “golden canary’s” opinion was truly a rare find.
“Then of course…”
Under Peng Zhi’en’s expectant and grateful gaze, Song Qingxing delivered her utterly cold reply.
“I won’t forgive him.”
Moreover, Song Qingxing had been by Xie Jingcheng’s side throughout her bedridden recovery from the burns, and she knew that Xie Jingcheng hadn’t been responsible for these events.
The other party had already decided to wait until the film’s release to cause trouble, so they wouldn’t change their plans.
That meant the culprit could only be Xie Jingcheng’s father, whose power far exceeded even Xie Jingcheng’s.
With that, Song Qingxing pulled Xie Jingcheng forward, leaving Peng Zhi’en alone, staring despondently at the distant luxury cars.
Dark thoughts began to fester in his mind.
His future was already bleak, so he might as well fight back like a cornered dog, dragging others down with him in his death throes.
Especially Song Qingxing!
She could have resolved everything with a simple nod, but she refused.
“Just you wait…” Peng Zhi’en muttered to himself.
Perhaps due to the night’s chill, Song Qingxing felt an icy coldness on her shoulders, causing goosebumps to rise across her skin.
“Achoo!”
Song Qingxing sneezed, pulling out a tissue.
“What’s wrong?”
Noticing the unusually cold temperature in the underground garage, Xie Jingcheng took off her coat and draped it over Song Qingxing’s shoulders.
The coat, still warm from her body heat, instantly eased the chill.
