- Chapter 37 - Pretending to Be His Girlfriend
“What nonsense are you talking about?”
Xie Jingcheng was initially confused, but she quickly realized that Song Qingxing must have been startled awake by the Director’s shout of “Cut!”
She immediately released her grip, not wanting Song Qingxing to know that she had been holding her while she slept. It felt too presumptuous.
“Xie Jingcheng?”
Song Qingxing stared in disbelief. No way, I’m dreaming about Xie Jingcheng even in my dreams?
I can’t possibly like her that much already!
If I’m already falling this hard after just a few weeks, what will happen to me later?
What will I do when the Gold Sponsor terminates the contract? Will I cling desperately until the end?
“How can I dream about you even in my dreams? I can’t possibly be falling for you, that would be terrible.”
Song Qingxing pinched her cheek, a trick she’d heard could wake you from a dream. The logic was that realizing you’re dreaming would shatter the brain’s fabricated reality.
But to her surprise, this time she felt a sharp, stinging pain. The sensation spread from the dermis of her cheek, radiating through her nerves.
Song Qingxing’s eyes widened in disbelief.
No way?!
This isn’t a dream!
This is the real Xie Jingcheng, not some figment of my imagination.
“Is liking me such a terrible thing?”
When Xie Jingcheng first heard her beloved say this, a sour bubble immediately rose in her heart. Yet her face remained impassive as she withdrew her hand, crossed her arms, and leaned against the tree.
Her eyes held an indescribable emotion, like a black panther stalking its prey.
“Of course not. I just think our current relationship doesn’t need to evolve into romance. It would make things too complicated.”
Once money and emotions become intertwined, things become messy and difficult to untangle.
Hearing that Song Qingxing wasn’t rejecting her outright, Xie Jingcheng’s heart flickered with a tiny spark of hope. She suddenly closed the distance, their noses nearly touching.
Only then did Song Qingxing reach out to push her away.
“Xie Jingcheng, getting this close isn’t a good idea. Everyone’s watching…”
Song Qingxing’s ears flushed crimson, and her voice trembled like a lamb’s as she spoke, lacking the strength to push Xie Jingcheng away properly.
“What’s wrong with it? Everyone already knows about our relationship. Even if they see us and take pictures, what can they do? No one would dare upload them.”
“I’ve realized… I’ve changed my mind a little.”
Though she hadn’t initially considered this, Xie Jingcheng now felt like surrendering completely.
“Song Qingxing, would you consider me? We could take our relationship to the next level.”
The shadows of the trees swayed gently in the breeze, and the campus streetlights illuminated Ying Xie Jingcheng’s breathtakingly beautiful face.
How could anyone resist this scene?
Song Qingxing’s heart pounded like a trapped deer. She didn’t know whether to nod or shake her head, because either answer would lead her into a deep pit.
If she refused, at least she could preserve her true self. When the Young Miss eventually tired of her, she could move on with her life, rather than spending her days in melancholy.
“I’m afraid you’ll change your mind,” Song Qingxing said bluntly.
Xie Jingcheng’s eyes widened. No one had ever accused her of being fickle before.
“I won’t.”
“That’s just you saying you won’t.”
“Xie Jingcheng, our relationship is unequal. How can I possibly be your girlfriend?”
“Of course, if you want to play pretend, I don’t mind. I can be your girlfriend, but not a real one.”
For the first time, Song Qingxing dared to challenge Xie Jingcheng. She refused to deceive her, choosing honesty even if it meant facing consequences.
Though the outcome wasn’t as perfect as she’d hoped, Xie Jingcheng remained undeterred.
“You’ll agree eventually. Just give me time.”
“Besides, there’s nothing wrong with playing these games occasionally.”
After speaking, Xie Jingcheng leaned closer.
Song Qingxing sighed inwardly, assuming the other woman was about to kiss her regardless of the time, place, or circumstances. She wondered how to avoid it or what position would keep them out of sight.
But in the next moment, Xie Jingcheng simply pressed her forehead against Song Qingxing’s, their warmth transferring between them.
“How much longer until you finish filming? If it drags on too long, I’ll talk to the Director and ask him to ease up the schedule for a day. It wouldn’t be a big deal.”
“No need,” Song Qingxing said, standing up.
She had already seen the male lead finish his basketball scene out of the corner of her eye, meaning it was her turn next.
Her scene involved wiping sweat off the male lead.
Campus dramas primarily showcase a pure, innocent image, which was no challenge for Song Qingxing, a former girl group member.
“I’m going to film now, Yu Zhi. Take care of Actress Xie.”
Song Qingxing removed her outer jacket, revealing a pristine JK uniform underneath. Since the story was set in a prestigious high school, they didn’t have to wear those ugly tracksuits.
Song Qingxing’s porcelain-white legs swayed before Xie Jingcheng’s eyes, her thoughts racing. She lowered her gaze to her palm.
I really want to touch them…
The moment this thought surfaced, Xie Jingcheng bit her tongue, forcefully suppressing the inappropriate desire and lewd thoughts.
She sat quietly, waiting for the scene to finish filming, mentally strategizing a thousand different approaches.
How can I win someone’s heart?
Xie Jingcheng hadn’t acted in many romance films, mainly because she didn’t understand love herself. How could she possibly portray it convincingly?
So she always took the easy roles.
Yet a few of her performances had resonated deeply with audiences.
Xie Jingcheng once played a character who could manipulate people’s minds, brainwashing and emotionally abusing them to make those around her carry out her dirty work.
Perhaps…
She could try something similar.
Not as vile, just more assertive.
Because if she hesitated any longer, the person she loved might be snatched away, pot and all.
Xie Jingcheng had never been one to back down easily. She wouldn’t let go without a fight.
By the time the night scene wrapped up, it was already late. Song Qingxing had assumed Xie Jingcheng wouldn’t be waiting for her, but as she approached, she saw her sitting motionless on the bench.
“It’s so late. Why didn’t you go back to rest?” Song Qingxing asked.
“Waiting for you at the hotel would have been the same,” Xie Jingcheng replied.
Remembering her earlier, rather blunt rejection of Xie Jingcheng, Song Qingxing felt a pang of regret. She shouldn’t have been so direct.
No one wants to hear such things.
She should have been more tactful. The art of communication clearly still needed practice.
“I wanted to wait for you to go back together,” Xie Jingcheng said, standing up slowly, her legs slightly numb.
“Xie Jingcheng,” Song Qingxing hesitated, then blurted out, “Some of the things I said earlier… I didn’t really think them through. Don’t take them too seriously.”
She paused, unsure whether to accept Xie Jingcheng’s feelings. Once she fell in love, her life might change completely.
