Chapter 108
At the words of the young man, which conveyed a sense of determination, Dujae decided to discard the doubts filling his mind. Such a voice could never belong to a group of murderers like that.
Instead of answering, Dujae silently followed the instructions and immediately stopped walking at the command to halt, which came through his earpiece. The young man, who had been observing Dujae and his group from above, spoke calmly.
“If you look to the 2 o’clock direction, you’ll see the entrance to the emergency medical center about 100 meters away.”
Hiding behind a flower bed and only slightly poking his head out to confirm, Dujae saw that the young man’s words were true—the large letters spelling out “Emergency Medical Center” were clearly visible at the entrance. However, there were a significant number of zombies wandering around the area.
“Even if we can’t see ahead, make sure to head straight for the entrance.”
“If we run like this, we’ll get noticed by the zombies.”
The zombies, covered in a layer of red, had very narrow and shallow vision. But that didn’t mean they couldn’t see at all, only that they could only distinguish things up to a certain distance. It would be impossible to run undetected by the zombies nearby, and the sound of splashing from the rain-soaked ground would be inevitable.
While Dujae, with his fast movements and adaptability, might manage to slip through, the others, with their much weaker physiques, would have no chance.
“It’s alright. We’ll block the zombies’ sight and hearing for you.”
Dujae couldn’t understand how they planned to do that from the 7th floor. However, he thought they wouldn’t speak so confidently without at least some plan.
Meanwhile, the drone, which had been guiding Dujae’s group, rose higher. It seemed to enter the open window of the 7th floor where three people were standing, but then it flew out through another window where only one person was standing.
‘What is that…?’
On the underside of the drone, something was hanging. It wasn’t a walkie-talkie or a note like before.
‘A can?’
A drink can was attached to the drone’s underside, tightly pressed against the 2nd floor.
Dujae couldn’t take his eyes off the drone, which was returning in his direction. He was soon startled.
At the opening of the can, tiny flames were visible. Upon closer inspection, it wasn’t a flame but the wick of a fuse burning as it stuck out from the can. By the time the drone reached the position directly in front of him, the fire had completely entered the can.
At that moment—
Boom—!
The loud explosion startled everyone, and they instinctively shrank back. Though there were zombies nearby, they couldn’t stand up or stretch their necks too far, but they could still catch a glimpse of the situation through a small gap between the flower beds.
Boom! Bang—!
Kreeeh—!
A can, like the one on the drone’s underside, fell onto a zombie’s head at some distance. It fell with an incredible speed, not simply being thrown from a high floor but seemingly launched from some kind of catapult.
The can hit a zombie or struck the ground, and at that moment, a flash of light and an explosion followed.
Khek!
Kyaaah—!
The zombies, hearing the explosion, rushed toward the sound. Meanwhile, the cans launched from the 7th floor continued to fall onto the zombies’ heads, causing explosions as they went. From the looks of it, these weren’t full-fledged bombs with devastating amounts of explosives. Instead, it seemed they were focused only on creating explosions for noise.
‘What did they do?’
A can that explodes like a bomb—he had never heard of anything like it.
In his confusion, Dujae heard the young man’s voice through his earpiece.
“Once I signal, run immediately.”
As Dujae turned his head, he saw smoke slowly rising from the drone’s underside, about 3 meters above the ground. The thick, white smoke quickly formed into a huge cloud.
Hooook—
The smoke pouring out from each can was comparable to a smoke screen grenade. The smoke quickly filled Dujae’s group’s line of sight.
While the homemade smoke screen was in action, the growls of zombies rushing toward the sound of explosions could still be heard. Some of the zombies headed toward the entrance of the emergency medical center, which had been patrolling the area.
Though Dujae’s group couldn’t see a thing due to the dense smoke, those on the higher floors clearly had full visibility of the situation below. Sure enough, the young man was observing the lower levels carefully and gave more instructions.
“I’ll count to three.”
Upon hearing the young man’s order, Dujae turned to the others and told them, “When he counts to three, we run.” The others, with tense expressions, nodded silently and prepared to move at any moment.
“One.”
Dujae raised three fingers, keeping his gaze fixed ahead. He could feel the others’ eyes on his hand behind him.
“Two.”
The cans on the drone’s underside emitted more smoke. At this point, even if someone were standing and running, they’d be completely obscured by the smoke.
“Three.”
Dujae’s group tensed their legs, making sure their heads didn’t stick out from the flower bed too much, ready to spring into action.
“Run!”
At the young man’s command, Dujae’s legs moved quickly. The others followed closely behind, desperately trying not to fall behind. In the thick smoke, the sound of their hurried footsteps echoed.
Boom—!
Kyaaah—!
Khek—!
The voices of the zombies, drawn in by the explosion, slowly moved away from the three people.
The people on the 7th floor, having attracted the zombies with the explosion, managed to gradually distance them from the entrance of the emergency medical center. If it had been an ordinary can, the wind could have blown it off course, but the can was filled with stones that could be used as flints and gunpowder, and a device to provide enough acceleration was already set up by the window. The falling position of the can was within the margin of error predicted by their leader, the young man.
As if that wasn’t enough, the young man also dropped a smoke grenade can. Thanks to this, the zombies that had gathered after hearing the explosion were completely blocked from seeing anything, as the smoke poured out from everywhere. It would have been nearly impossible for the zombies, surrounded by the smoke, to spot the group of Dujae running.
“Right ahead is the entrance. It’s open, so just run in.”
Amid the tension and the smoke, Dujae, who couldn’t see anything clearly, broke through the smoke area created by the drone, which had stopped in midair. Since the young man had said to run straight in, Dujae trusted that there would be no zombies at the entrance.
Once he broke through the smoke, just as he had expected, there were no zombies around the entrance. Although there were zombies a bit further away, they were distracted by the continuous explosions and didn’t even glance in Dujae’s direction. Instead, they were clustered near the windows on the outside.
The voice through the earpiece once again provided directions. The young man informed them of the location of the emergency staircase.
Fortunately, the path to the emergency staircase wasn’t complicated or far, so they quickly reached it. The door leading to the stairs wasn’t locked, as if it had been prepared for them in advance, and the group safely entered the stairwell through the smoothly opening door.
Relieved, Dujae, almost without thinking, slammed the door shut with a loud bang as soon as they entered the stairwell. Finally, he let out a deep breath.
“Hoo…”
The two others, now relaxed, sighed in relief or leaned against the wall and slumped down in exhaustion.
As Dujae caught his breath, he couldn’t help but laugh at his earlier thoughts.
He had jumped into the building without hesitation, trusting that there would be no zombies inside, even though he had personally seen that the first to fourth floors were already filled with zombies.
That was how resolute, strong, and trustworthy the young man’s voice had been.
“Are you all alright? Any injuries?”
Such a genuinely concerned voice added to Dujae’s growing trust.
Now feeling at ease, Dujae helped his male companion to his feet and responded to the young man.
“We’re fine. We’ll thank you properly once we get up.”
Having nearly dismissed all doubts about the young man and his group, Dujae spoke in a voice mixed with a smile.
“Come to think of it, I still don’t know your name. I’m…”
“I know, Mr. Kwak Dujae.”
Dujae’s eyes widened when the young man spoke his name before he could even introduce himself, and soon he was able to hear the young man’s name.
“I’m Kang Junseong.”
It was a name he hadn’t heard before, yet the young man seemed to know him very well.
Then the young man said something strange.
“Please take care of me in ‘reality’ as well, Mr. Kwak.”
