The refined young master bowed to the onlookers and then spoke a few sentences in Rouran language, which Gu Yu Qi could not understand. The many Rouran spectators cast doubtful glances at Gu Yu Qi before turning their attention to the woman who seemed ready to flee at any moment. Slowly, they dispersed.
Bai Fu saw how the young master easily solved this big problem with a few words. She was immediately relieved and delighted. She smiled and bowed to the young master, “Young Master is truly remarkable, managing to send them away with just a few words. Allow Bai Fu to express gratitude to Young Master on behalf of our Young Miss.”
“It’s only natural. When our Young Master travels to various countries, you might not even know where he is!” A sudden voice interrupted, prompting Bai Fu to glare in its direction.
The speaker was a servant following behind the young master in blue. He was not too old either, but his eyes were bright and sharp. Gu Yu Qi could immediately tell at a glance that he was the impolite coachman from that night. She could not help but take a closer look. This servant was tall, with faint veins visible on the back of his hands, indicating strength or martial prowess.
A courteous young master accompanied by a servant skilled in verbal sparring. Gu Yu Qi found this combination quite amusing.
“Ah Hui, mind your manners,” the young master in blue gently reprimanded the servant with a wave of his folded fan. Then, he smiled at Gu Yu Qi and said, “My apologies for my servant’s rudeness offending Young Miss. Although my servant tends to be talkative, he means no harm. While I have travelled everywhere, only this servant remained faithfully by my side without complaint, so I hesitate to restrain him too much. Please forgive him, Young Miss.”
Gu Yu Qi raised an eyebrow slightly. This man was indeed intriguing. Just now, a thought had merely passed through her mind, but it seemed he could see right through her. He was undoubtedly not ordinary.
Despite his casual demeanour, his smile with two shallow dimples was not off putting but rather endearing, giving off a warm and friendly vibe.
“Young Master is too kind. Young Master has just helped me out of a difficult situation and I have yet to thank you. How could I harbour any other thoughts?” Gu Yu Qi smiled and retracted her gaze.
Bai Fu looked at the man named Ah Hui and snorted. “Who told you to talk so much?!” she muttered.
“Little wench,” Ah Hui tilted his head very arrogantly and muttered back.
“Who are you calling a little wench?” Bai Fu raised her eyebrows and retorted.
“I’m talking about you!” Ah Hui immediately replied.
“Old eggplant!” Bai Fu snorted and pulled a face at him.
“Oh, you little wench, what did you say?” Ah Hui was also unwilling to admit defeat.
“Bai Fu!”
“Ah Hui!”
Gu Yu Qi and the young master dressed in blue simultaneously scolded the people beside them. Both of them were startled and immediately bowed to each other. Gu Yu Qi curtsied, while the young master cupped his fists respectfully. Their movements and expressions were almost synchronised. After that, they looked at each other and could not help but burst into laughter.
Gu Yu Qi had not laughed so genuinely for a long time. Since the night she scolded Du Xia and sent him away, even her smiles were usually just a faint curve of the lips that did not reach her eyes, like the saying when one smiles on the outside but not inside. However, her laughter just now was as brilliant as the first rays of dawn.
After the young master in blue laughed, there were two dimples at the corners of his lips. They gave him an elegant and yet somewhat cute appearance.
“I am Lou Xiao, a person from the capital of Daliang. It’s a pleasure to meet Young Miss,” the young master cupped his fists and introduced himself.
“Nice to meet you, Young Master Lou,” Gu Yu Qi smiled and curtseyed. After this, it could be considered that they were acquaintances.
“Wow, Young Master Lou is from the Liang Dynasty,” Bai Fu exclaimed, her eyes lighting up, “Then you must have travelled to many places.”
“This little wench knows nothing. Our Young Master has travelled far and wide, so naturally he has visited many places. Our Young Master can even speak the Rouran language. What do you think?” Ah Hui said, lifting his chin and looking down at Bai Fu disdainfully.
“Ah Hui, if you keep this up, I’ll send you back first!” Lou Xiao frowned and warned.
“Yes. Young Master, Ah Hui will keep quiet,” Ah Hui saw his master was displeased and immediately held up his hands. Then he retreated behind him, not forgetting to give Bai Fu a resentful glare.
Bai Fu stuck her tongue out at him and rolled her eyes in response.
“Bai Fu, what have I normally taught you?” Gu Yu Qi could not criticise someone else’s servant and could only tell Bai Fu not to continue arguing with Ah Hui.
“Yes, Bai Fu was wrong,” Bai Fu pouted and also stepped back behind Gu Yu Qi.
Gu Yu Qi then bowed to Lou Xiao, “Thank you, Young Master Lou, for resolving the situation today. If there’s anything I can help with in the future, please don’t hesitate to ask, Young Master.” She had been standing on the street chatting with this young master for a long time. People who were passing by could not help but look at them, so Gu Yu Qi decided it would be better to leave first.
“I’m sorry for the abruptness, Young Miss. Please go on,” Lou Xiao stepped aside immediately and gestured.
Gu Yu Qi nodded at him then immediately turned to board the carriage. Bai Fu also bid farewell to the Young Master and followed Gu Yu Qi. Zhang Lan slowly drove the carriage away.
“Young Miss, that Master Lou seems like a nice person,” Bai Fu occasionally turned to look back through the carriage curtains, observing the blue-clothed young master standing on the roadside who was watching their carriage leave until he was out of sight, “And he’s quite handsome and pleasing to the eye. Don’t you think so, Young Miss?”
“Mhmm,” Gu Yu Qi nodded slightly, “Well enough.” That man was indeed exceptionally handsome. Even if he stood beside Yun Ke, he would not be inferior. Perhaps he was even more attractive in some ways, especially with those charming dimples when he smiled.
“But that servant of his is so annoying,” Bai Fu snorted.
“You underestimate that servant too much,” Gu Yu Qi said slowly, “If it comes to a real fight, I’m afraid you’ll be no match for him.” Just by looking at the back of his hands, it was evident that he had trained extensively in martial arts.
“I haven’t even fought him yet. Miss, don’t dampen your own spirits and boost others’ prestige,” Bai Fu said, unconvinced.
“Alright, alright. You’re the most amazing,” Gu Yu Qi said lazily, not interested in arguing with her and just agreeing with her words. After saying that, she closed her eyes to take a nap.
Bai Fu originally wanted to continue talking with Gu Yu Qi, but seeing her looking very tired, she did not want to disturb her. So she could only sit boredly in the carriage, propping up her chin with her hand, and idly staring into space.
“Young Master, that girl is so boring. She didn’t even invite you for tea or anything. So stingy!” Ah Hui murmured quietly to Lou Xiao after Gu Yu Qi’s carriage had gone far away, “Ah. But, Young Master, that girl seems to have good self-cultivation. I incited the little maid next to her but she didn’t even get angry.”
“Open-minded as a valley,” Lou Xiao watched the departing carriage and said calmly, “Not bad indeed.”
“What should we do in the future?” Ah Hui asked in a low voice. “She just left without even looking back. If we were in the capital and a lady from a noble family was favoured by Young Master like that, she would probably cling and not leave.”
“No need to worry, we’ll proceed slowly,” a faint smile appeared on Lou Xiao’s lips, “What I want is her wholehearted submission. It’s not something achievable overnight. If she’s attracted to me merely for my appearance like others, what use is that to me?”
The daughter of the Qi dynasty’s Ding Yuan Marquis, Gu Yu Qi, what kind of woman are you really?
The woman inside the departing carriage was like a mystery, captivating his inquisitive gaze. Her reputation might not be good, and she had become a laughingstock in the noble circles of the Qi dynasty’s capital, but after truly interacting with her, he found her to be completely different from who she was rumoured to be.
In her pair of glittering dark eyes, he unexpectedly saw a sense of weariness of life.
How could such weariness of life be possessed by a 14 year old girl? That kind of weariness was the clarity that comes after experiencing countless trials, carrying a faintly heartbreaking sadness. Beneath her beautiful exterior, what kind of heart was she hiding?
He had looked through the information on her countless times, yet every time he encountered her, he could see different things in her eyes.
The first time at the inn, there was a hint of alertness and sharpness in her gaze. Only she had noticed there was something wrong with disguise among so many people. Not only did she evade his sudden attack, but she also warned everyone in time, causing his Reincarnation Bomb to be useless.
Lou Xiao could not help but lower his gaze to his own hand. The sword scar had disappeared, replaced by a scar left by the fire.
He could not remove the sword scar, so to prevent her from noticing, he could only grit his teeth and injure himself again.
There were not many people in this world who could hurt him, and the person who left a sword scar on him had already died by his hand.
The second time he saw her was on the cliff, facing bandits and assassins arranged by himself. She had remained calm and composed, showing excellent leadership. She led her few men to eliminate all the sacrificial soldiers he had sent. At that moment, he saw in her eyes steadiness and fearlessness. She had the talents of a military general!
The third time was that night. She was walking on the deserted official road like a wandering soul. The pain hidden in her eyes was so profound that it seemed to infect even his usually undisturbed heart. It made him inexplicably say so many things to her. That deep sorrow seemed to shroud her completely, like the darkness of the night.
The fourth time was just now. The helplessness and dumbfoundedness in her eyes finally made him feel that she was indeed a 14 year old girl. The confusion and helplessness on her face because she could not understand the Rouran language made him step forward immediately. Of course, he also wanted to use this opportunity to get closer to her.
He was the master of the Reincarnation Pavilion. Who could imagine that the terrifying leader of assassins would have the appearance of a modest gentleman?
A young master was like a jade, and this was generally the case.
It was him who had ordered the cancellation of the contract with Gu Huai Zhong and returned the deposit to Gu Huai Zhong. He had also informed other assassins not to accept orders related to Gu Huai Zhong.
He had the intention of cherishing this talent. He did not want her to die.
In fact, he could have continued to execute Gu Huai Zhong’s orders, forcing the mother and daughter into a corner, and then appearing as a saviour to rescue her and gain her trust. Or he could have used someone else to kill the person she cared most about, then appeared in front of her and asked if she wanted revenge and If she did, then join him.
However, he rejected all these thoughts.
He did not want to force her to join him in this way, it would be too boring. The power of hatred was indeed powerful, but at the same time, it was a double-edged sword, hurting others as well as oneself.
For a woman like Gu Yu Qi, having her willingly accompany him was the real challenge.
After so many years in the Reincarnation Pavilion, he had long understood one principle. Taking someone’s life was much simpler than taking their heart.
For a woman like Gu Yu Qi, he did not know why there were so many emotions welling up in her eyes. Yet, based on his years of experience, he could tell that Gu Yu Qi was the kind of person who appeared gentle but was actually very resolute. If you truly won her heart, even if you asked her to sacrifice her life for you, she would not complain in the slightest.
Excessive rigidity led to brittleness. He wanted Gu Yu Qi, not just a corpse.
When Gu Yu Qi returned home, she happened to meet Liang Huai Yu. Bai Fu could not wait to recount everything they had encountered to Liang Huai Yu. Bai Fu had a sharp tongue and she spoke eloquently and vividly, immediately captivating Liang Huai Yu’s attention.
She emphasised on describing Lou Xiao’s appearance and Liang Huai Yu was so excited that she watched Gu Yu Qi for her reaction.
Gu Yu Qi just smiled without any other expression.
“By the way, Mother, I want to learn the Rouran language,” Gu Yu Qi patiently waited for Bai Fu to finish her report before saying to Liang Huai Yu, “Could you please find a teacher who knows the Rouran language for me?” After saying this, she went back to her room.
It was rare for Gu Yu Qi to make a request so Liang Huai Yu treated it as if it were an imperial decree. That very day, a notice was posted in front of the Liang residence, recruiting skilled teachers proficient in the Rouran language, with excellent benefits.
Wow, the Liang residence was recruiting and the conditions were simply astonishingly generous, leaving people speechless. In no time, the area in front of the Liang residence became as crowded as a marketplace.
Since the teacher was to be hired for Gu Yu Qi, Liang Huai Yu had to personally oversee the selection.
Originally, she wanted to hire a female teacher, but after several Rouran women arrived, their proficiency level left Liang Huaiyu unimpressed. After careful consideration, none of them seemed suitable.
Evening arrived and Liang Huai Yu still had not found anyone she liked. She began to feel a bit weary. She decided to dismiss the remaining candidates and continue the search the next day.
“Bring in one more candidate. If they’re not suitable, we’ll look again tomorrow,” Liang Huai Yu said to Zhang Lan.
“Yes, Madam,” Zhang Lan replied with a bow.
Since arriving in Kuizhou, everyone had changed their address for Liang Huai Yu, calling her “Madam” instead of the previous “Eldest Miss”.
