Reincarnated As An Ogre, I’m Going To Enjoy Life In This Other World! - Chapter 61
It’s been about a week since I left the capital, and now I’m heading towards the Holy City of Phyllis. Since it’s the largest city closest to the capital, I decided to head there next.
I made my way west, stopping at various villages along the way, sometimes camping out under the stars.
“Now that I think about it, I’ve gotten quite used to this kind of travel.”
But the only reason I can travel like this without a care is because of this body.
“Thank you, Goddess, for everything.”
I put my hands together and thanked the Goddess as I looked up at the sky. After walking for a week, I finally reached a point where I could see the Holy City of Phyllis.
“That’s the Holy City, huh? It’s definitely built differently from the capital.”
The capital had a variety of buildings in a more chaotic arrangement, but the Holy City looked more organized. In the center, there was a tall building with a tower, similar to the Sagrada Familia.
“So that’s the Great Cathedral!”
The Holy City of Phyllis is home to a religion that worships the first Saint, Phyllis, and that cathedral is its headquarters.
“I’ve never seen a building like that in my past life… I’m looking forward to it.”
I happily approached the gate that led into the Holy City of Phyllis. There was a gatekeeper in white armor, and at first, they seemed wary, probably because I looked like a monster, but when I showed my adventurer’s card, they let me in without a problem.
The Holy City was beautiful from the outside, and the inside was just as lovely, with clean cobblestones and pristine white buildings lined up.
Most of the people walking around were dressed in fine clothes, and there were few adventurers. Instead, there were many nuns and priests in their religious attire, and most importantly, there were no monsters.
In the royal capital, I had seen unique monsters here and there, but here, not a single one could be seen.
“I guess monsters have no interest in religion.”
Because of that, I felt quite uncomfortable as people stared at me, but since I had come all this way, I decided to do some sightseeing.
While walking around, I noticed, as expected for a holy city, that there were many religious items. The goods in the shops and the clothing were different from the capital. There was also a convent, which seemed to also be an orphanage, with nuns taking care of children.
As I walked, I came to an open area with a fountain in the center, atop it stood a statue of a woman dressed as a nun, kneeling and offering a prayer.
As I was looking at the statue, I was suddenly called out to from the side.
“That statue is of Saintess Phyllis, the First Saint.”
When I looked in the direction of the voice, I saw an old man standing with a cane.
“Sorry for surprising you, it’s just rare to see a monster around here.”
The old man laughed, letting out a hearty “fufu” sound.
“Ah, so this is the Saintess, I see.”
“Yes, it seems that Saintess Phyllis suddenly appeared and began delivering messages from the gods to everyone.”
“Messages… from the gods, huh?”
“Do you not believe?”
The old man asked me with a mischievous grin on his face.
“No! That’s not it at all.”
(After all, I’ve met the goddess myself.)
“Fufu, you seem to be quite a devout monster.”
“I’m always grateful to the gods.”
(Though, it’s the goddess I’m talking about.)
With that, the old man directed his cane toward the cathedral.
“Then, you should head to the cathedral. It’s the time when Saintess Luna always holds her morning prayers.”
“Eh? I can meet the Saintess?”
“Of course, the morning prayers are always the Saintess’s duty.”
“I see…”
I thanked the old man and headed toward the cathedral.
“It’s really big when you see it up close.”
I looked up at the cathedral and spoke my thoughts. Inside, many people had gathered in the hall, and at the far end was the altar.
“Has it not started yet?”
After waiting for a while, the people in the hall started sitting on the floor, so I sat down the same way. Then, a silver-haired girl in a white robe entered from the right and walked towards the central altar.
(Is that the Saintess?)
When the Saintess reached the altar, she turned toward us.
“Good morning, everyone.”
Even though she wasn’t speaking loudly, her dignified voice echoed throughout the hall.
“We will now begin the morning service.”
When the Saintess said that, everyone simultaneously put their hands together and began to pray. Seeing that, the Saintess also clasped her hands and began to speak words of prayer.
When the Saintess finished her prayer, everyone raised their heads and gazed at her. She, in turn, looked around at everyone. At that moment, I felt like our eyes met.
“Now then, everyone, please do your best today. May Phyllis’s blessing be upon you.”
After saying this and bowing, everyone else bowed as well and began to leave the cathedral. As I started walking toward the back door, I was called from behind.
“You!”
When I turned around, a blonde girl in armor was standing there, looking excited.
“Yes, what is it?”
“Ah, no, I’m sorry for stopping you so suddenly. It’s just that it’s rare to see a monster in a place like this.”
When I asked her, suddenly she seemed to regain herself and began to fumble around nervously.
“Are you an adventurer? Here for sightseeing?”
“Yes, I’m traveling around the world.”
“I see.”
With a small smile, the blonde woman reached out and shook my hand.
“Please enjoy your time in the Holy City.”
After saying that, she walked away. I was left confused, and as I looked at her, I noticed a strange sensation in my hand.
When I looked at my hand, I found a small piece of paper. I unfolded it, and it said the following.
“Wait in front of the statue of Saint Phyllis at midnight.”
I looked up, intending to ask the blonde girl, but she was nowhere to be found.
