☆7 Ancient Ruins of the West and the Demon God
In this world, the spirits that are summoned generally resemble the ones I knew in my past life—like Salamanders and Ifrits for fire, or Undines and Shiva for water (or ice).
These spirits manifest when their presence is sensed nearby. And their form is shaped using the summoner’s mana based on their image.
No special contracts are needed. But on the flip side, if there are no such spirits nearby, summoning magic won’t work.
Higher-ranked spirits, however, exist above these common ones. They can only be summoned by forming a contract with a summoner.
These higher spirits are often called “Demon Gods” out of fear and reverence.
A high-ranked spirit can only be bound to one summoner at a time. Once contracted, no other summoner can summon them. Since they stay with their summoner, they can be called upon at any time—but doing so consumes an enormous amount of mana.
Because of their rarity and power, every summoner aspires to form a contract with a high-ranked spirit. But it’s easier said than done.
If I think of them as rare Pokémon cards, I can kind of understand Elysia’s obsession—it’s like a collector’s spirit.
Elysia had managed to get intel on a possible Demon God lurking somewhere.
This particular Demon God was once called Agni, the Flame Demon God. And he was said to have operated out of an ancient ruin in the west.
According to legend, during the Mythic Age, tens of thousands of years ago, Agni fought against a god at these very ruins. Though he was defeated and his physical body was destroyed, his soul remained behind. It lingers as a spiritual entity in that place.
…A vengeful ghost, basically.
With that, we set off westward in a carriage.
At the back of the carriage, there was a magic artifact infused with wind energy. It boosted our speed like a constant accelerator.
Inside the carriage, as expected, the atmosphere was awkward as hell.
Gald and the other attendant—an elf woman named Fia—made no effort to hide their hostility toward me.
I had never experienced racism in my past life, but… was this what it felt like?
The way things were, talking directly to Elysia was impossible.
Actually… who was Elysia, anyway?
Not that I could ask.
By the time the sun started setting, we arrived at a small town.
It had an Arabian or Middle Eastern vibe. And in the evening light, the scenery looked almost surreal.
“Lady Elysia, we should rest here for tonight,”
Gald said, scanning the surroundings carefully.
“Yes, we won’t be able to travel any further today.”
“You’re paying for the food, right? I’m starving to death here. I don’t care what it is, as long as it’s got strong flavors, I want to eat until I drop.”
Who knows how many hours had passed since we got on the carriage?
I hadn’t been given a single piece of food, just water. My hunger was unbearable.
“How vulgar. Only a barbaric race would say such things over something as trivial as skipping a few meals.”
Fia looked at me with pure disgust.
“Hah? Right now, food is everything to me. If you want my help, shut up and feed me something good.”
I didn’t care if I sounded crude.
I had spent way too long in the dark elf settlement eating nothing but plain vegetarian food.
Now that I had the chance, I was going all out—I wanted meat, salty, well-seasoned food, and lots of it.
“Meat. Meat, meat, meat, MEAT!!!”
Fia sighed, completely exasperated. But she started walking toward what looked like the town’s food district.
Eventually, we entered a stylish, stone-built restaurant that even Elysia seemed comfortable with.
The moment we stepped inside, the rich aroma of spices filled the air.
At the center of the restaurant, a large charcoal grill was slowly turning. It was roasting a massive hunk of meat.
Apparently, this was the restaurant’s specialty dish—Shawarma.
We took our seats at a wooden table, waiting for our food.
The owner, smiling, brought over plates. They were filled with thinly sliced, juicy meat stuffed into soft, fluffy bread.
Inside the bread, there were fresh vegetables and a special sauce generously spread throughout.
I took a bite.
The spices, the savory meat, and the crunch of fresh veggies all exploded in my mouth.
The memory of a Samurai Mac from back home flashed through my mind. And before I knew it, tears streamed down my cheeks.
Damn… this is amazing…
“Oi, what’s wrong with you?”
Gald stared at me. He looked genuinely startled.
“Huh? Wait… am I crying? What the hell?”
I wiped away the tears running down my face.
Elysia also gave me a puzzled look. But I just shook my head with a teary smile.
“Nah, this is just… too good. I think I was moved.”
Surrounded by the warm atmosphere of the restaurant and the delicious food, we all ate in silence for a while. We were just enjoying the moment.
I ate five Samurai Macs.
By the time I finished, both my body and soul felt satisfied. It was as if I had gained a new kind of energy—something different from mana.
At that moment, I found my new purpose in this journey.
To travel the world… and eat all the best food it has to offer.
