☆42 Leonard’s Visit
Grimbald was caught in a storm of inner conflict.
His pride had been wounded by a young human. And in a fit of anger, he had led his clan away from the Grube Mine. However, he had no clear destination in mind. Meanwhile, the more adventurous members of his people had set out into the world as travelers and mercenaries. It left him with only about five hundred followers.
For the time being, he decided to seek hope in the neighboring land of Celestia. Yet, the thought of bowing his head to humans was a bitter pill to swallow. However, with his clan’s future at stake, he could not afford to let pride cloud his judgment.
Should he uphold his pride or accept reality? Grimbald’s heart wavered.
The future that awaited the adventurers who had left for the outside world and the path he himself would choose—both were crucial decisions that would determine the fate of his people.

As the new year arrived and the winter cold grew even harsher, Elysia’s autonomous territory continued to prosper. In addition to agriculture and blacksmithing, they had recently begun experimenting with elven weaving techniques. The delicate embroidery quickly became popular among Eldora’s wealthy elite. It turned into a luxury item that fetched high prices. As a result, the economy of the autonomous region flourished further. It attracted new merchants and artisans, making the city livelier than ever.
On one such day, Leonard Eldora visited Elysia’s estate.
Elysia had been engrossed in a book by the fireplace in her chamber. But upon hearing of Leonard’s arrival, she closed the book and quietly rose from her seat.
“Lady Elysia, I have come today with an important matter to discuss.”
Leonard bowed politely, and Elysia responded with a gentle smile.
“A matter to discuss? If there is anything I can do, please feel free to speak.”
Leonard was reassured by her kind voice. He relaxed slightly.
“Thank you. The truth is…”
He started to speak but then hesitated. His expression clouded as he struggled to find the right words. Seeing this, Elysia gently encouraged him.
“Please, do not hold back. Is something troubling you?”
Leonard took a deep breath, as if steeling himself. He finally spoke.
“Yes… The dwarves who were at the Grube Mine in neighboring Valford have been driven out by the knights. They are now seeking refuge in Celestia.”
“Driven out by the knights? What happened?”
Elysia furrowed her brows, listening intently.
“According to them, they were accused of illegally occupying the mine and were forcibly removed through military action.”
“Military action? That is quite a severe measure.”
Elysia’s expression grew even more serious.
“Indeed, it is. Now, they have sought protection in my territory… but Eldora does not have the resources to support them.”
Leonard let out a deep sigh, his shoulders slumping.
“At the same time, if we were to simply turn them away, they might become desperate and cause trouble in the surrounding regions. That is something we must avoid.”
As he spoke, he cast a sidelong glance at Elysia. He was clearly eager to see how she would react to his proposal.
Elysia remained silent. Her hand was on her chin as she pondered the situation.
“Actually, you may already be aware, but there is an undeveloped mine near Mistia Lake. The bedrock is too hard, so it has been left untouched…”
Leonard paused briefly. He was carefully observing Elysia’s expression.
“Lady Elysia, what do you think? Perhaps we could have them develop that mine. Of course, we would cover part of the initial costs.”
Elysia listened quietly, her eyes narrowing slightly in thought.
One could almost see the calculations running through her mind as she considered the various possibilities. A brief silence followed before she slowly spoke.
“I see… So that is your proposal.”
Her voice carried a tone of both understanding and caution.
“Given the quality of the magic stones harvested near Mistia Lake, there is a high chance that this mine could yield valuable materials as well.”
She turned her gaze back to Leonard, a small smile playing on her lips. Though a sharp glint remained in her eyes.
“And in return, a portion of the mined resources would be offered to the duke, correct?”
Leonard scratched his head with a sheepish smile before nodding.
“Yes, if we could receive a modest share, we would be most grateful.”
Elysia raised an eyebrow slightly before nodding in agreement.
“Very well. We will take them in.”
Hearing her words, Leonard’s face lit up with relief. Bowing deeply, he expressed his gratitude.
“Thank you, Lady Elysia. I truly appreciate your generosity.”
Elysia returned his courteous gesture with a warm smile and a gentle nod.
