I steadied my thoughts and walked straight down the narrow path. 

The vampire Lucian was terrible at functioning during the day. 

In sunlight, his body felt sluggish and heavy. So he spent most of the daytime holed up in his house. Sure enough, today was no different—he was lounging around inside. 

When I knocked on the door, there was a short pause before it slowly creaked open. Lucian appeared, his face still drowsy.

“I work night shifts, you know. This is my usual sleep time.”

Lucian shrugged slightly. He was squinting at the bright sunlight outside.

Lucian sighed, looking exasperated. 

I gazed at him seriously and carefully chose my words before speaking.

Lucian asked with mild curiosity, though his expression remained relaxed and drowsy. But I kept my tone serious. 

“I need you to infiltrate the Valford Knights.” 

“Nope. Not interested.” 

He rejected it instantly.

“This is an order. You don’t get to refuse. You’re the only one I can ask.” 

I took a step closer and locked eyes with him. 

My sudden change in demeanor must have thrown him off—his usual playful attitude faded, and his expression grew more serious. 

Tension hung between us as he met my gaze. His own gaze was sharp and unreadable. 

“…Explain.” 

Lucian’s voice was lower now. It was stripped of its usual lightness. 

Holding his gaze, I chose my words carefully and answered slowly. 

“I need you to use your abilities inside the knight order.” 

“…You mean my ‘Charm’ ability?” 

His eyebrows twitched slightly. I nodded. 

“Yeah. But listen—this mission is extremely dangerous. It will require careful planning and absolute caution.” 

Lucian fell silent. He stared at me for a long moment. I could see hesitation and doubt flickering in his eyes. 

Then, with a heavy sigh, he slumped his shoulders. 

It was as if he had resigned himself to an inescapable fate. He gave a small shake of his head. 

“………..I really don’t have a choice, huh? Fine. I’ll do it.” 

Though reluctant, there was determination in his voice. 

Feeling his resolve, I nodded deeply. 

“I’m grateful. Once the mission is complete, I’ll make sure you’re properly rewarded.” 

Lucian stared at me for a moment before giving a faint smile. 

“Don’t worry about it. I wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for you, Souta-san. This is just my way of repaying that debt.” 

Damn. 

That hit deep. 

Something warm stirred in my chest. And I smiled back. 

“Alright, then. First, we’ll start training for your recruitment. The entrance tests are ridiculously tough. You can drop the night patrol job—I’ll ask Xenon to train you thoroughly.”
