☆67 And So, I Become King
From a corner of the conference room, I felt an overwhelming presence.
—It was King Eldaris of Eldarin.
His piercing gaze bore into me, as if assessing my worth.
…Please stop. My stomach is twisting from nerves.
“U-uhm…”
I cleared my throat softly and forced myself to speak.
“I’m Souta. Together with Princess Elysia over there, I built a town in Celestia. At first, I just wanted to build a single house and live freely, without any constraints… but before I knew it, that small home had grown into an entire city.”
The tension in the room seemed to ease just a little.
I continued.
“The first people I took in were a group of young bandits from Silenia. They had lost their families and livelihoods to the plague that had spread across the land. I thought maybe I could help rehabilitate them—nothing more than that, really.”
As I recalled those days, I glanced around the room.
“After that, people who wanted to learn elven craftsmanship arrived. Then came dwarves fleeing Alexis’ persecution. Then mountain tribes, dark elves… Eventually, even vampires showed up.”
A murmur spread through the room.
One noble muttered under his breath:
“…Even vampires?”
—Well, I guess that reaction is understandable.
“People with completely different lifestyles, cultures—everything about them was different. How could they live together in harmony? The solution was simple.”
I paused briefly and swept my gaze across the room.
“They just needed to talk to each other. Rank, seniority, past grudges—none of that mattered. As long as we talked it out, we could always find a compromise. And if someone didn’t like it, they were free to leave—though, so far, not a single person has.”
Silence filled the conference room.
Everyone was listening intently, their expressions serious.
“If this method ever stops working… then we’ll think of something else. Fortunately, the Autonomous Territory is full of people far smarter than me. They’ll surely come up with an even better solution.”
I let out a quiet breath.
“…I feel like I’ve been rambling on without a clear point.”
I shrugged slightly.
“If I become king—this is the kind of approach I’ll take. That’s all I have to say.”
Alright, I got through it.
I rushed through the last part, though.
The room fell into deep silence once more.
Everyone seemed lost in thought.
…So, how did that go?
“Governing the autonomous region should be enough responsibility for you. What reason do you have to take on more than that?”
A plump, white-haired old man shot me a sharp look as he posed the question.
—An unexpected question. I froze for a moment.
Then, out of the corner of my eye, I saw Elysia watching me intently.
Memories of the time we had spent together flashed through my mind.
She had worked me to the bone…
—But despite all my complaints, I had enjoyed every moment of it.
“Well… to be honest, I have no interest in ruling a country on such a large scale.”
The words flowed naturally.
“But if I don’t become king… I’ll lose something important to me.”
Slowly, I turned my gaze toward King Eldaris.
“I need to become king to be worthy of Elysia. If I want to stay by her side in the future, I need your support. Because as I am now… we’ll be forced apart.”
For a moment, the entire room was stunned.
Then, the tension broke. It was replaced by a strangely light atmosphere.
“Hah… What the hell is that?”
The silver-haired man let out a sigh, exasperated.
“So, basically… you want to become king just so you can be with the woman you love?”
—I wasn’t even embarrassed anymore.
“Exactly. That’s the only reason.”
I couldn’t imagine a life without that everyday routine.
Elysia remained silent, simply watching me.
“Hah… If you say that, we’ve got no choice but to accept, don’t we? If anyone still wants to object after that, they’d just be petty.”
The silver-haired man glanced around the room before continuing.
“Besides, isn’t it fine? If he ever loses control, there are people around who can stop him.”
The gathered nobles exchanged looks. One by one, they nodded in agreement. They then began to clap.
—I felt all the strength drain from my body.
It was over.
I was never doing this kind of public speech again.
…No, I *couldn’t* do it again.
◆◆◆
After the long meeting ended, Elysia stood in a hallway. She was speaking quietly with her father, King Eldaris of Eldarin.
“That man… he truly is remarkable. His mana is, of course, immensely powerful… but more than that, I could tell how deeply he cares for you.”
“Yes. He has helped me countless times. And every moment I spend with him is truly joyful.”
“Hmm… Very well.”
Eldaris gave a single nod. Then, his expression hardened as he fixed a sharp gaze on Elysia.
“I will allow the marriage. However, you understand, don’t you?”
“—?”
“The passage of time is different for humans and us elves. From our perspective, the time you will have with him… will feel like nothing more than a fleeting moment.”
At those words, Elysia smiled softly.
“I understand………. That is precisely why I want to make every moment as rich and meaningful as possible.”
She took a breath before continuing.
“And—when we have children, I want to live on. I want to watch over our grandchildren, and their descendants for generations to come, cherishing their future.”
At her words, Eldaris’ expression softened.
He gazed into the distance and gave a small nod.
“I see… Before I knew it, you have truly grown into a fine woman.”
