☆72 What Awaits in the Abyss ②
In the darkness, within the faint glow of Lilith’s light. A black mass slowly began to emerge from Yuhak’s fingertips.
The mass gradually expanded, growing into a large, jet-black sphere.
Yuhak tossed the sphere high into the air. He held his breath as he clenched his fist tightly.
—Pop!
A dry bursting sound rang out, and the black sphere exploded.
Countless tiny particles of mana scattered like fireworks. It left behind shimmering remnants that rained down upon the misty body of the Primal Dragon.
But Yuhak didn’t stop.
He thrust both hands forward, channeling even more mana.
“Physical Control!”
As Yuhak’s voice echoed, a torrent of darkness surged from his hands.
The dark flow intertwined with the scattered mana particles. It formed a gray mist around the Primal Dragon.
—However, in the blink of an eye, that mist vanished.
“What…?”
Yuhak’s voice trembled in shock.
Staring ahead in disbelief, he saw the Primal Dragon swaying leisurely, completely unfazed.
“I… I’m sorry… Not only did it fail to weaken it, but it had no effect at all…”
Yuhak’s voice wavered. It was drained of all confidence.
—You’ve gotta be kidding me.
So… does that mean it’s Abyssla’s turn next?
That demon of his supposedly swallowed an S-rank adventurer whole.
“Abyssla, is your demon summoning ready—”
I turned to him mid-sentence, only to find him looking uncomfortable.
“…I’ve been trying to summon it this whole time. But it’s not responding at all…”
“Fool! To reveal myself before the Origin itself… Such a thing is unthinkable!”
It seemed to be the voice of the demon he was trying to summon. But it was clearly trembling.
It sounded… terrified.
「Hmm. Is that all?」
The Primal Dragon muttered, its voice laced with boredom.
「Then as promised, you may take me with you.」
—Uh, we never agreed to that?
…Wait, what the hell am I supposed to do here?
Bringing this thing back to town is impossible.
The city’s finally thriving again. But if I bring this thing back, people will run for the hills…
「Do not worry. I shall sleep once more and take the form of a small ornament. My spiritual power will not leak out.」
—Spiritual power.
So it is a different force from mana, huh?
“…And what exactly am I supposed to do with this ‘ornament’ once I bring it back?”
I asked, half in resignation.
「In time, a child shall be born to you. One who, like you, possesses nothing. When that child reaches the age of fifteen, give it to them. Do not worry—I will not bring harm. Guhahaha!」
With that, the Primal Dragon’s massive misty body slowly began to shrink.
And then—
With a light thud, something landed on the ground.
(Note:
Bahamut from Final Fantasy’s Figurine
)
What lay there was a small Bahamut figurine, barely the size of a palm.
The overwhelming sense of dread from moments ago was completely gone. What’s left behind was an oddly tranquil atmosphere.
All the pressure, all the energy—it had vanished without a trace.
I gently picked up the figurine.
Looking around, I saw my companions slumped to the ground in the dim light. They were breathing heavily.
Freed from the tension, they exhaled in deep, shaky breaths.
“You guys okay?”
I called out to Lilith.
She glanced up at me, still panting.
“No… not really. I didn’t even do anything, but I feel like I used up all my mana…”
Her usual composed demeanor was gone. It left only exhaustion on her face.
“At least we made it out alive…”
Yuhak muttered, his hands resting on the ground as he forced the words out.
“The Origin of this world… It really was something else. Even Morglim was too scared to show up…”
Abyssla spoke in disbelief, letting out a weak laugh.
I still didn’t fully grasp just how insane his failed summoning was.
But gradually, as everyone steadied their breathing, they began to relax. Relief was finally settling in.
The tension in the air slowly faded away.
“We should head back…”
Lilith murmured as she struggled to her feet.
◆◆◆
By the time we reached the exit of the Great Chasm, the outside world had already fallen into complete darkness.
I had lost all sense of time inside the cavern. But judging by how late it was, we must have been in there for quite a while.
“We made it back in one piece.”
Taking a deep breath, I squeezed the Primal Dragon figurine in my pocket.
—This really is just an ornament, right?
It felt oddly soft and squishy to the touch. It was strangely pleasant in my hand.
There was no eerie energy seeping from it, no unsettling presence.
…It should be safe to bring back to town.
“Yeah.”
Lilith gave me a tired smile.
“—With this, is there anything left weighing on your mind?”
“…Yeah, I guess not.”
If I was being honest, there were still plenty of places I wanted to visit.
When I came here before, Lilith had told me about some unbelievable monsters and legendary treasures from the age of mythology—I still wanted to search for more of those.
“Well, honestly, I did want to see more monsters and treasure, but—”
I cut myself off mid-sentence and turned my gaze toward Elysia.
“Something more important came up.”
“Ah, you mean what the Primal Dragon said about your future kid?”
Abyssla jumped in without hesitation, blunt as ever.
“Better start making lots of them.”
“No, that’s not what I—”
I started to deny it but stopped halfway.
……………Actually, if I really thought about it, maybe that was part of it too.
