- Episode 16 - Forgiveness and Guidance
There was a heavy silence in the square after Allen’s words.
The people were forced to make the decision to either change and face their past mistakes or to remain unchanged and remain stuck.
The villagers were perplexed. Uncertain of what to do, they looked at one another and whispered.
Their hearts were filled with fear, uncertainty, regret, and a glimmer of hope in Allen’s abilities. However, nobody was able to respond immediately. No one attempted to flatter Allen or place the blame on him. There was only a dense atmosphere.
Then the silence was broken by an elderly man carrying a cane. When Allen was still an adventurer, he had spoken with Allen a few times and was once one of the town’s leaders. He moved slowly out of the crowd to face Allen. Then he bowed deeply.
“No, Allen, Sir Allen Lloyd. We’ve made a huge error.
Although the old man’s voice was weak, his spirit was strong. The square echoed with his words.
“We disregarded the reality. We trusted rumors. We made an effort to win over the powerful. We harmed you and forced you to leave this town as a result. That is a sin that is difficult to forgive. We’re willing to take any punishment.
After a brief pause, he met Allen’s eyes directly.
However, if what you say is accurate and you truly wish to guide this town and assist us, then please give us your strength. Peace should no longer be based on the suffering of others. We wish to use our own hands to create a better future. Please!
Once more, he bowed deeply. The square’s atmosphere was changed by his sincere remarks and respectful deeds. Other voices emerged from the crowd, encouraged by him.
Indeed! We also wish to change!
“Please, Allen!”
At that moment, two men made their way to Allen, pushing through the crowd.
One was the innkeeper who once turned Allen away with a chilly behavior. He had been insulted by a merchant. With tears in their eyes, they both knelt down in front of Allen, pressing their foreheads to the floor.
“Allen! We sincerely apologize!
“We mistreated you when you most needed our assistance. Please!
Allen silently interrupted them before they could say anything more.
“Raise your heads.”
There was no sarcasm or anger in his voice. The tone was merely cool and collected.
“It is impossible to change the past. The hurt I experienced and what you did won’t go away. What you do from now on is what counts. By your actions, demonstrate your resolve.
It wasn’t a pardon. It wasn’t a punishment, though. Allen’s remarks encouraged people to take action for the future and put an end to the past. Trembling, the two men stood up to absorb his words.
Allen looked at the crowd before turning to face the clock tower, the town’s tallest structure.
“Then take action to demonstrate your resolve to me.”
Using Void Magic, he lifted his right hand.
Black-purple energy swirled around Allen as the surrounding space twisted. People watched and gasped.
Allen’s magic quickly spread throughout the entire town.
The town walls come first. Wind, rain, and monster attacks had caused them to eventually crack and collapse. Now that Allen’s magic had touched them, they were fixed as though time had stopped. Furthermore, the walls became dark and emitted an odd yet potent glow. The material itself had been altered and fortified by Void Magic.
“Oh!
“The walls! They’re stronger than ever, not just fixed!
People were in awe. It was the strongest, most useful magic they had ever seen.
Allen then worked on the town’s supply system.
Supplies were frequently delayed due to the dangerous mountain paths and monsters. Between the town and a neighboring village, Allen created makeshift storage facilities using his Imaginal Space magic. Additionally, he positioned friendly monsters with teleporting abilities or low-level and summoned beasts to establish a system that could swiftly and safely transport a lot of goods.
Thanks to Allen’s magic, the town now regularly received food, medicine, and building materials—things it had never had. Things started to get better.
Allen wasn’t by himself. Garud, Luna, and Elena also contributed their skills.
Elena managed the wind and scouted the town’s vast outskirts. She followed the movements of monsters and issued prompt alerts when there is danger. Her assistance kept the town safe and made the guards’ jobs easier. She occasionally carried supplies or messages by using the wind.
Garud made use of his blacksmithing and dwarfing abilities. He enhanced the town’s defenses, reforged their tools and weapons, and fixed dilapidated buildings and bridges. He was also in charge of setting up the crossbows and traps. The other artisans in the town were influenced by his work.
Luna made use of her extensive elf life and the knowledge she had acquired from the Beastman village. She taught people how to grow herbs, used spirit magic to heal the sick and injured, and developed a water purification system based on ancient knowledge. Everyone found solace in her wisdom and serene heart.
Allen and his friends didn’t use force in their work. The townspeople were only sufficiently inspired to defend themselves.
People were initially terrified of them. They stayed apart. However, their emotions started to change as they saw Allen and the others actually transform the town.
Respect replaced fear. Trust replaced doubt. Guilt turned into a sense of obligation to take action.
People started cleaning up debris, fixing structures, distributing food, and setting up watch groups. They ceased depending solely on Allen. They began restoring their town on their own.
Even the kids who used to throw stones at Allen now assisted with moving debris or went to learn how to gather herbs from Elena and Luna.
Allen’s efforts were aided by the merchant and innkeeper, who put forth a lot of effort to rebuild the town.
When people are prepared to learn from their mistakes and move forward towards a better future, the entire town starts to feel energized.
Allen silently observed the town’s transformation and its inhabitants from the summit of the clock tower.
His eyes were still dark, and his face was still hard. He was still consumed by the desire for vengeance.
However, he sensed something new—something other than hatred—growing in his heart as he saw everyone cooperating and attempting to create a future.
(Is this what I really wanted?)
He still had no response.
Perhaps, though, Allen had already started to see a new aspect of his power—not just destruction, but also creation and direction—without even recognizing it.
His quest for vengeance has not changed. However, the path ahead was starting to take a different form than he had initially thought.
