- Episode 2 - Smoldering Jealousy and Cracks
Under the banner of “The Blades of Dawn,” Allen and his team continued to build their achievements.
Gilbert had many noble connections. Lilia, who looked like a saint, had kind healing powers and a charm that attracted people. Dario, the mood maker, always stayed cheerful. But more than anything, it was Allen’s amazing knowledge of magic and how he used it that made their success rate so high. Together, their name quickly became known among adventurers in the royal capital.
Allen’s magic was especially powerful. It could change the course of a battle and do things that seemed impossible. People started calling him “The Mage of Dawnlight” and praised his young talent.
However, as their fame grew and more people praised Allen, Gilbert—the team’s leader—started to feel uneasy.
He knew that Allen was important to their success. But deep down, his pride as a noble and the fact that Allen was always in the spotlight created a dark feeling inside him.
That smoldering jealousy slowly turned into a real crack in their relationship—triggered by one very difficult mission.
The mission was to defeat the Wind Wyvern, a creature that had started appearing in the nearby mountains and was threatening the trade routes.
The wyvern was fast and had a strong wind breath. Normal adventurers couldn’t handle it.
“A wyvern, huh… It’s tough, but if we beat it, our reputation will grow even more,”
Gilbert said confidently as he read the request paper. He glanced at Allen.
“Allen, do you have a plan? I want to hear your thoughts.”
It sounded like a normal question from a leader, but his tone had a hidden test in it—like he was measuring Allen’s worth.
“The wyvern’s flying and breath attacks are dangerous, but it has weak points. Some scales near the base of its wings are fragile. If we aim there, we might stop it from flying. Also, its breath attack has a big wind-up time. We can strike during that opening or…”
Allen calmly gave his analysis while checking the map and past sighting reports. His plans were always clear and logical, with real strategies.
“Alright, let’s go with Allen’s plan. Dario and I will distract it in front. Allen, use your magic to hit the wings. Lilia, support us from behind.”
Gilbert almost completely followed Allen’s plan. At first glance, their teamwork looked perfect.
They climbed the rocky mountains where the wyvern was said to have its nest. Thanks to Allen’s Mana Sense, they found its exact location and started the battle with a surprise attack.
“Let’s go!”
Gilbert and Dario shouted and charged at the wyvern. The giant beast fought back with
sharp claws and tail, and a fierce battle began.
“Ice Lance! ”
Allen watched the fight calmly. He waited for a moment when the wyvern shifted its
stance, then cast a spear of ice. He aimed at the wing joint—but the wyvern noticed at the
last second and dodged.
“Damn, it’s fast! ” Dario cursed.
“Lilia, support us!” Gilbert shouted, and Lilia began her spell.
The battle seemed to follow Allen’s plan, but Gilbert felt nervous inside. If Allen’s magic didn’t land, all their fighting wouldn’t be enough. Once again, they had to rely on Allen. That reality hurt Gilbert’s pride.
(If this keeps up, Allen will get all the credit again… No! I’ll be the one to finish this!)
This impatience led to a huge mistake.
The wyvern inhaled deeply, preparing its wind breath. Allen had said this was the best chance to attack.
At that moment—
“Now’s my chance! Take this!”
Gilbert jumped in before Allen gave the signal. He rushed in alone and used his strongest sword move.
But it was a bad decision.
The breath attack’s wind-up also meant it was storing a huge amount of energy. Gilbert’s strike bounced off the wyvern’s hard scales, and he lost his balance.
“No—!”
The wind breath was released at close range. Gilbert had no way to escape its power.
“Gilbert! ”
“Gilbert! ”
Lilia and Dario screamed.
“Cocytus Field! ”
Allen’s voice rang out. In the next moment, the area around Gilbert froze instantly.
The wind breath hit Allen’s freezing barrier and lost its power. It turned to icy mist and scattered. At the same time, the wyvern’s feet were frozen, making it move slower.
“Now, Dario!”
Allen shouted.
Dario moved fast and hit the wyvern’s wing joint with a strong blow.
The wyvern let out a loud cry and fell to the ground, unable to fly. It couldn’t move anymore. The battle was over.
They had won, and Gilbert was safe. But he stood there, shocked. Allen had saved him, and his own mistake had almost killed him.
Back in the capital, they reported their success and went to a familiar tavern to celebrate.
“That was close! But man, Allen saved the day again! ” Dario said, patting Allen’s shoulder.
“Really… Thank you, Allen,” Lilia said with honest gratitude.
Other adventurers in the tavern were talking about them too.
“Hey, did you hear? The Blades of Dawn took down a wyvern!”
“No way! That’s crazy!”
“Especially that mage, Allen. I heard he froze the breath attack instantly.”
“For sure, Allen’s the ace of that team!”
The praise made Gilbert feel bitter.
He smiled and drank with the others, but under the table, his clenched fist turned white. His hand holding the glass was shaking.
(Why… why him, not me? Why does everyone praise that commoner?)
(I’m the leader! I should be the one in the spotlight!)
(Allen… if only you weren’t here…)
The fire of jealousy inside Gilbert grew stronger.
Lilia and Dario noticed his dark mood and how he glared at Allen. But they didn’t know what to do. They looked away in silence. The crack in their party was now clear to everyone.
That night…
Gilbert stayed alone in his room, full of hate toward Allen.
“I can’t forgive him… I won’t let this continue…”
He made up his mind. He would remove Allen from the party—or from the world.
No matter his noble status or past fame, everything felt small next to Allen’s talent. So, he decided to erase that talent completely.
Gilbert put on a cloak, hid his face, and walked into the dark alleys of the city.
He entered a dusty room in an old tavern. A thin man—an informant who worked in the shadows—was waiting for him.
“…Is everything ready? ” Gilbert asked in a low voice.
The man grinned and took out a small stone wrapped in black cloth.
“Yes, sir. Here’s a fake Magic Disruption Barrier Stone. It messes up magic in the area. Advanced spells get hard to cast. The stronger the magic, the more pushback the user gets. It’s just a fake, so no promises, but…”
“That’s fine. It’s enough. Now we need a good place for the setup.”
“I know just the place—the Ancient Ruins in the Dragoncry Mountains. The magic there is already unstable. Dangerous monsters live there too. Many treasure hunters went missing recently. Perfect for making an ‘accident’ happen.”
Gilbert’s lips curved into a twisted smile.
“The ruins of the Dragoncry Mountains… Perfect. That’s where it will happen.”
His evil plan to destroy Allen—both socially and physically—had begun, quietly but surely.
