Rumor Has It I Don’t Follow A-Class Morals - Chapter 59
After finishing breakfast, Ming Muyao stepped outside to get some fresh air. The temperature had been rising rapidly over the past couple of days, with a huge difference between day and night. The moment she walked out the door, she saw that the magnolia and cherry blossom trees planted in the community had all bloomed. The wind blew, scattering petals all over the ground.
Su Yin had naturally seen them too. There wasn’t a girl who didn’t like flowers. Ming Muyao thought maybe she could take Su Yin to a flower shop another day, see if there were any small shrubs they could plant in the yard.
The little strawberry plant Ming Muyao had given Su Yin last time had wilted not long after it flowered and bore fruit. Aunt Chen had looked it over for a long time but couldn’t figure out what went wrong. In the end, she just replanted it in the yard, hoping it might come back to life next year.
After soaking in the sun for a while, Ming Muyao finally turned and went back inside.
“Muyao, your phone kept ringing just now. I couldn’t answer it, so maybe check to see if something’s up?”
Aunt Chen walked over holding Ming Muyao’s phone, speaking in an uncertain tone.
“Probably a work call,” Ming Muyao replied as she took the phone. “Go ahead and take care of your things. You don’t have to worry about me.”
“Alright. If you start feeling a headache, let me know and I’ll make you some soup.”
“Okay.”
After Aunt Chen left, Ming Muyao unlocked her phone and looked at the missed calls.
It was an unfamiliar number. She had just finished a contract signing event yesterday, and everything had gone smoothly. The company shouldn’t have anything urgent for her right now, so she couldn’t imagine who would be calling.
But what if it’s important? Ming Muyao thought, and decided to call back.
“Hello, this is Weiai Nursing Home.”
A nursing home?
Ming Muyao immediately tensed up. After identifying herself, the person on the other end finally said, “Ms. Ming, Ms. Zhu’s condition has shown improvement today. The attending physician asked us to contact you to see when you might be able to visit.”
“Her condition improved?” Ming Muyao’s eyes lit up. If Su Yin’s mother was really getting better, that would be amazing news.
“Yes, there’s already some slight muscle response. In a few days, we’re organizing a specialist consultation, and we need you to come by to go over the details and a few other matters.”
“I understand.” Ming Muyao thought for a moment, then said, “I’m free today. Can I come over now?”
“Of course. We’ll contact the attending physician for you.”
“Great. Thank you.”
After hanging up, Ming Muyao quickly went upstairs and knocked on Su Yin’s door. She found her wearing headphones, practicing a listening test. Seeing how rushed Ming Muyao looked, Su Yin instinctively put down what she was doing.
“What’s wrong?” Su Yin looked up at her. “Did something happen?”
Ming Muyao couldn’t hold back her smile. She hurried over, bent down, and placed her hands on Su Yin’s shoulders.
“I just got a call from the nursing home. Your mom’s treatment is showing results. They said she’s responding now.”
Su Yin was stunned at first. She stared blankly at Ming Muyao and asked in disbelief, “Responding?”
“Yes. They want us to go over there. Hurry and get changed—we’re heading out now.”
Seeing how serious Ming Muyao was, Su Yin finally snapped out of it and started to panic. She got up so fast that her earphone cord pulled her phone off the desk with a loud thud.
Ming Muyao noticed Su Yin’s flustered expression and quickly took her hand, gently comforting her. “Don’t panic. Everything’s going to be alright.”
Once they were both dressed, they left the house. Since Ming Muyao had drunk the night before and couldn’t drive yet, the two of them had to call a cab at the community entrance. They waited over five minutes before getting one.
After getting out of the taxi, Ming Muyao led Su Yin to the doctor’s office. The attending physician was in the middle of discussing something with a colleague. When he saw them come in, he greeted them and motioned for them to sit.
Once seated, the doctor smiled and said, “You’re the family members, right? Have you seen the patient yet?”
Ming Muyao shook her head and glanced at Su Yin before replying, “I came as soon as I got the call. I’m not sure about the specifics yet.”
“Yesterday, during rounds, our nurse noticed some slight muscle reaction. When I checked again this morning, I could sense signs of consciousness. So we asked the nurse to call you immediately.”
Su Yin’s eyes lit up. She quickly asked, “Is my mom awake?”
“She’s not fully awake yet, but continued treatment should help her recover gradually.” The doctor didn’t want to beat around the bush, knowing how anxious they must be. “In a couple of days, we’ll be holding a specialist consultation. There’s also a visiting medical team coming to our facility, and your mom’s case is considered quite unique. We’d like to ask if you’d be okay with allowing photo and video documentation of the treatment process—for academic purposes.”
Ming Muyao was intrigued. “What’s so special about her condition?”
The doctor chuckled. “It’s mainly for clinical teaching videos. In exchange, we can offer a reduction in your treatment costs.”
“That’s not important,” Ming Muyao said. “What we really want to know is, if things continue like this, when might she fully recover?”
“That’s hard to say. We’ll have to wait until the consultation is over to get a clearer picture. But…”
The doctor paused, then added, “Based on my many years of experience, she’ll wake up eventually. It’s just a matter of time. Try not to worry too much.”
After leaving the doctor’s office, Su Yin still hadn’t calmed down. She gripped Ming Muyao’s hand tightly and practically dragged her down the hallway toward the patient room.
Auntie Cui was just about to take some bedding outside to dry when she saw the two of them and quickly greeted them. “Oh, you’re here?”
Su Yin rushed into the room, while Ming Muyao paused beside Auntie Cui and explained, “The doctor called this morning and said her mom’s condition had improved, so we came right over.”
Auntie Cui beamed. “Yes, yes. I was going to let you know, but since the nurse already called, I figured it wasn’t necessary.”
Hearing that, Ming Muyao felt more at ease. She stood at the doorway, watching Su Yin throw herself onto the hospital bed, and then turned to Auntie Cui. “Go ahead and do your chores.”
“Alright.”
Once the others had left, Ming Muyao stepped into the room and walked over to stand beside Su Yin.
Su Yin’s mom still looked lifeless, but she did have a bit more color than when they’d first seen her.
She was still extremely thin. Her cheekbones were sharp from the weight loss, giving her a fragile, deathly look.
Even so, you could still tell she had once been very beautiful. Otherwise, how could she have had a daughter as lovely and sweet as Su Yin?
Su Yin turned to look at Ming Muyao and said softly, “I’ll dip a cotton swab in some water and moisten her lips.”
Ming Muyao nodded, watching as Su Yin expertly picked up a cotton swab, poured a little clean water into a disposable paper cup, and gently dabbed it onto her mother’s lips.
Watching the two of them, Ming Muyao quietly said, “Once your mom wakes up, let’s all live together.”
Su Yin froze with the cotton swab still in her hand. She turned to look at Ming Muyao in disbelief.
Ming Muyao met her gaze and smiled. “I’m serious.”
Compared to her own sharp-tongued, difficult mother Ming Zheng, she far preferred this quiet, gentle woman lying in the hospital bed. If she had to choose, she would rather have someone like this as her mother.
Besides, she was already with Su Yin. And Su Yin’s mom would be her mom too.
Su Yin stared at her for a long moment, then finally nodded.
“Okay.”
That night, Su Yin decided to stay at the nursing home. Ming Muyao didn’t stop her—she simply asked Auntie Cui to take good care of Su Yin and to let her know if there was anything they needed.
The single room was small, but it wasn’t a problem to squeeze in one more person.
Auntie Cui usually slept on a folding bed. Su Yin didn’t plan to take her spot—she was fine with crashing on the couch for one night.
Before leaving, Ming Muyao said to her, “Send me a list of whatever you need tonight. I’ll come pick you up for class in the morning.”
There was no class today, but there would be tomorrow. Su Yin nodded reluctantly, watching as Ming Muyao got in a cab and left.
For the next few days, Su Yin stayed at the nursing home until the specialist consultation was over.
The results were promising—Su Yin’s mom was recovering well. With the company crisis resolved, Ming Muyao was now more than willing to spend both time and money to care for the woman in the hospital bed. It was only a matter of time before she woke up.
Aunt Chen was also thrilled when she heard the news. Ming Muyao asked her to see if she could rearrange a room on the first floor for easier access once Su Yin’s mom came home.
But that would all have to wait until she actually woke up.
As for the company, Heng Jingxian’s funds had already arrived, and the shares were split. Ming Muyao immediately began cleaning house—cutting all stalled projects, and letting unprofitable subsidiaries sink or swim on their own. If they couldn’t be saved, she’d send them off with a compensation package.
Meanwhile, Heng Jingxian bought a luxury apartment in the area, clearly planning to stay long-term.
On a weekend night, after working late at the office, Ming Muyao was still buried in paperwork. It was already 11 p.m. She figured it was so late already—she might as well crash on the office couch. It was big enough for one person.
Just then, her phone rang.
She looked at the screen and couldn’t help smiling.
“Hello?”
“It’s me.”
Su Yin’s soft, sweet voice came through the speaker. She asked gently, “It’s so late already. Aunt Chen wants to know if you’re coming home tonight.”
Ming Muyao chuckled. “Why are you still up?”
Su Yin was sitting at her desk, a huge stack of test papers in front of her, kicking her feet as she said, “I just finished a whole set. Looked up and realized it was this late and you still weren’t home. Did you eat? Are you planning to come back tonight?”
Listening to Su Yin’s tone—like a little housewife waiting for her spouse to come home—Ming Muyao suddenly felt her determination to stay at the office waver.
She had such a cute, beautiful girlfriend waiting at home for her.
Did she really need to keep working late and sleeping at the office?
What a waste of youth to not spend it with the one you love!
