Chapter 12 – Senior Gu Zhen Returns
“Ah!”
Chen Sheng felt a bone-deep chill as he staggered back in terror, crashing into the bathroom door.
He stared at Zhang Jun’s face in the mirror, filled with resentment, then bolted out of the bathroom in a panic.
He didn’t even bother wiping his face properly—just hastily rubbed it with his sleeve.
His entire body was drenched in cold sweat. Though the sun was shining outside, he couldn’t feel a trace of warmth.
Chen Sheng was so scared and tense that tears welled up in his eyes.
He ran as fast as he could toward Zhang Jun’s classroom.
Finally, panting and breathless, he reached the doorway.
Zhang Jun was sitting at his desk inside—but his face was frighteningly pale.
“Zhang Jun,” Chen Sheng called from the doorway.
Zhang Jun glanced over at him, a look of fear in his eyes. It seemed like he wanted to say something, but in the end, he said nothing and turned away.
Chen Sheng had come to check if Zhang Jun was okay.
Seeing his current state, Chen Sheng could guess that something must’ve happened last night. That thing probably went after Zhang Jun too…
It was all his fault.
Feeling guilty and heartbroken, Chen Sheng turned to leave.
But the next moment, he suddenly heard Zhang Jun’s voice.
“Chen Sheng… I’m sorry.”
Chen Sheng turned around to see Zhang Jun standing a few steps away.
“I’m sorry,” Zhang Jun repeated, his face pale and full of guilt.
Chen Sheng gave a bitter smile. “I already know. I’ll move back to my own dorm tonight.”
As soon as he finished speaking, Zhang Jun rushed over, grabbed his arm, and pulled him aside.
He then explained everything that had happened the night before.
Chen Sheng had guessed some of it already, but he hadn’t expected that thing to actually try to harm Zhang Jun.
All he could feel now was helpless rage.
“I’ll go back to my own dorm tonight. If I stay any longer in yours, everyone else in your dorm will be in danger. I don’t want you all to suffer because of me…”
Zhang Jun looked equally upset. “Why don’t you just move out entirely? If you don’t have enough money, I’ve got some—please, just don’t stay in the dorm anymore.”
Chen Sheng hesitated. He’d already relied on Zhang Jun too much.
Seeing his hesitation, Zhang Jun immediately took out his phone and transferred money to him.
Then he said firmly, “I’m heading back to class. Just listen to me—don’t stay in that dorm anymore.”
Before Chen Sheng could say a word, Zhang Jun had already turned and walked back to the classroom.
Chen Sheng opened his phone and saw the transfer notification.
He sighed.
After a long internal struggle, he finally accepted the money.
Once he found a place to stay and got a part-time job, he would repay Zhang Jun the moment he received his salary.
But if he wanted to move out, he had to talk to the dorm supervisor first.
…
It was soon noon, and classes had ended.
Chen Sheng went to the cafeteria. It was his first time eating alone since coming to the academy.
He had already decided, the moment Zhang Jun offered help, to distance himself.
Even if Zhang Jun didn’t choose to avoid him, he would be the one to pull away.
Making that decision had torn at Chen Sheng’s heart. He felt agonizing sadness, and even as he ate, tears wouldn’t stop falling. The food tasted like nothing.
After just a few bites, he went to find the dorm supervisor.
—
Inside the dorm office,
A middle-aged man sat at a computer. After listening to Chen Sheng’s request, he looked up and said, “You’re sure you want to move out now? Once you leave, there’s no coming back.”
Chen Sheng hesitated.
But when he thought about that thing that was constantly watching him, he opened his mouth to agree.
Before he could speak, though, the supervisor added, “Your dorm really is something—one person suddenly decides to move back in, and now you want to move out. Sigh. Well, if you’ve decided…”
Wait—someone’s moving back in?
Chen Sheng immediately remembered the senior he had never met since the semester began—Gu Zhen.
“Is it Senior Gu Zhen who came back?” Chen Sheng asked quickly.
“Yeah, it’s him. Why? Are you still moving out? If so, I need to make arrangements.”
“I am. I’ll move out tomorrow.”
After saying that, Chen Sheng ran out.
The middle-aged supervisor looked at his retreating figure and shook his head.
“Sigh, these students… such trouble.”
…
Chen Sheng ran all the way back to the dorm.
The moment he heard that Senior Gu Zhen had returned, he felt a surge of excitement.
He had never met him before, but he had heard a lot of good things about him—he was an outstanding upperclassman.
Chen Sheng truly admired him.
But the thought of Gu Zhen moving back into that dorm made him deeply uneasy.
He was afraid that the thing was still there.
He knew that the thing was fixated on him, but…
Before he left, he still wanted to meet the senior he looked up to.
When he reached the dorm entrance—
He saw the door was open, and inside, a tall figure stood in front of the wardrobe, seemingly hesitating.
The moment Chen Sheng laid eyes on him, his heart began to pound uncontrollably.
“Senior Gu Zhen!” he called out nervously.
The tall figure turned around, and the moment their eyes met, he smiled gently.
His features were flawless, and his voice soft and kind. “You must be my roommate, Chen Sheng?”
Chen Sheng nodded shyly and stepped into the room.
“Senior, why did you suddenly come back?”
Gu Zhen smiled and replied, “My course load has increased, so I thought I’d move back in. This way, I won’t have to waste time commuting.”
Chen Sheng nodded. “That sounds tough, Senior. But I believe you can do it. Oh, by the way… I’ll be moving out tomorrow.”
“Why?”
“Because… I want to find a part-time job outside and earn some living expenses.”
“So hardworking, huh? How about this—why don’t you help me out instead? I’ll pay you for it, and you won’t have to move out.”
Chen Sheng looked up in disbelief, surprised and happy.
Even if it were unpaid, he’d gladly help his senior. He didn’t want to move out.
But he had no choice.
So, he had to refuse… but he didn’t know how.
Especially when facing that warm and gentle smile on Gu Zhen’s handsome face—it made the words even harder to say.
Still, he didn’t want to drag his senior into this.
After thinking for a moment, he asked, “Senior… do you believe in ghosts?”
As soon as he spoke, he heard a light chuckle.
“Ghosts, huh? Hard to say. If you believe in them, they exist. If you don’t, they don’t. Personally, I don’t believe in them. If something’s going on, it’s usually just someone pretending to be spooky.”
Chen Sheng clenched the hem of his shirt.
So the senior didn’t believe in ghosts.
That meant trying to explain would be pointless.
Lowering his head, he said apologetically, “I’m sorry, Senior. I really do have to move out.”
“That’s okay, no need to apologize. By the way, should we exchange contact info? I’ve been living off campus for a while, and I don’t have much contact with anyone from the academy.
I was really looking forward to having a roommate again, but now you’re moving out too. Let’s stay in touch—maybe we can grab a meal sometime.”
“O-Okay, Senior!”
Overjoyed and a little flustered, Chen Sheng exchanged contact info with the senior he admired.
