Chapter 18 – Pretending to Be Lovers
After Chen Sheng finished speaking, he saw the serious and solemn look on his senior’s face melt back into a warm smile.
At that moment, their taxi arrived.
Once they got in and drove for a while, they finally reached their destination.
Chen Sheng followed his senior, carrying his luggage into an apartment building.
After entering the room, the senior set his suitcase down, then took Chen Sheng’s luggage and placed it to the side as well.
“Junior, you’ll stay here with me for the next few days. We’ll go back to school after this is resolved.”
Chen Sheng quickly said, “Thank you, Senior. I’m really troubling you.”
“Chen Sheng.”
After he said that, Chen Sheng noticed his senior standing beside the couch, wearing that serious expression again.
It was the first time his senior had called his full name with such seriousness.
Looking at him, the senior said, “Come sit. There’s something I need to tell you.”
Chen Sheng nervously walked over and sat beside him.
“The person I mentioned who could deal with that thing… is actually me. I sensed its presence the moment I moved into the dorm. It’s tricky, and incredibly difficult to handle.
That’s why I pretended not to know anything. Chen Sheng, I also already know… what that thing feels for you.”
After hearing everything his senior said, Chen Sheng’s mind buzzed. A static-like ringing filled his ears.
Zzzzz… It was as if something inside his brain had snapped.
“S-Senior… You said… you could handle that thing… and you also know what it feels… for me?”
Chen Sheng’s face turned pale.
So his senior had known all along?
That meant he’d just been fooling himself this whole time.
Just the thought that his senior knew what that thing wanted from him made Chen Sheng feel like the ground was spinning beneath him.
“It’s okay, Chen Sheng.”
Suddenly, a firm yet gentle hand rested on his shoulder.
That touch pulled him out of his panicked thoughts.
He looked and saw his senior’s hand on his shoulder, his expression full of concern.
“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to keep it from you. But I can’t handle that thing on my own. Back in the dorm, I never expected it would control my body and do that to you. I’m sorry, Chen Sheng. At the time, I had to pretend not to believe you—so I wouldn’t tip it off. I had planned to strike once I found its weakness. But I didn’t think… it would kill Lin Su. All I could do… was watch.”
His senior’s face twisted with guilt and pain.
Seeing that look, Chen Sheng’s heart softened.
He hadn’t expected his senior had known about the thing in the dorm all along… but he clearly had his own reasons.
That thing was truly terrifying—after all, it wasn’t even human.
Thinking this, Chen Sheng quickly said, “It’s not your fault, Senior. It’s all because of that thing. This has nothing to do with you. So don’t blame yourself anymore.
Senior, what do we do now? That thing is so powerful… Now that I’ve left school, won’t it come after me?”
“No, it won’t.”
The senior clenched his fists and said,
“I’ve already found its weakness. It can’t leave the school—for now. That’s why it used me and your friends to threaten you, to keep you from leaving.”
So that’s how it was.
Chen Sheng was furious. That thing wasn’t even human, yet still so despicable and shameless.
Wait—
Chen Sheng suddenly thought of Zhang Jun and the others.
“Senior, it won’t hurt my friend Zhang Jun, right? I’ve left the school—it must be furious now. What if it kills my friends?”
As he spoke, worry consumed him. He hurried to text Zhang Jun.
Just as he took out his phone, the senior said,
“It won’t—at least, not yet. But we need to lure it out as soon as possible.”
Chen Sheng frowned, confused.
“But Senior, didn’t you say it can’t leave the campus?”
The senior looked at him and said,
“There’s one exception. If we hit its weak spot—it’ll lose control. It’ll try anything to get out.”
Weak spot?
Chen Sheng’s face was full of confusion.
The senior suddenly leaned in close, staring into his eyes.
“Chen Sheng… You are its weakness. That’s why I need your help to destroy it completely.”
“Me?”
Chen Sheng’s heart started pounding.
His senior was way too close—his heartbeat was practically leaping out of his chest.
“Yes. You, Chen Sheng.”
“Then… what do you need me to do? I-I don’t think I can help much.”
As he said this, he leaned back a little.
His heart felt like it was about to jump out of his chest.
Then suddenly—
The senior took his hand in his own.
“Chen Sheng, that thing treats you differently. Didn’t you notice? It shows killing intent toward everyone—except you. Anyone who gets near you, it becomes jealous—just like a human in love. So here’s my plan: we’ll get close—act like we’re in a relationship. It can’t leave the school, but it can still observe us. So we’ll put on a show. You pretend to be my boyfriend. Make it furious. Make it want to kill me. Once it steps out of the school boundaries, its powers will weaken. Then I’ll be able to finish it off.”
As his senior held his hand, Chen Sheng’s brain basically exploded.
It felt like fireworks were going off in his head.
What was he feeling?
Was it admiration? Or… something more?
His senior wanted him to pretend to be his boyfriend?
Chen Sheng took a while to calm down and grasp the main point.
“But… what if it can hear what we’re saying now? What if, Senior, you can’t handle it once it shows up?”
“Don’t worry. Trust me, Chen Sheng. We’re outside the school now—I can block it. It can’t hear a thing we’re saying. All it can see is me holding your hand. Chen Sheng, are you willing to help me?”
Of course Chen Sheng was willing.
But he was still worried.
Worried for his senior…
And he was nervous too. Just thinking about pretending to be lovers—being physically close—he didn’t know how to act.
Plus, they were both guys…
Though that thing technically wasn’t even a real person…
It still felt different.
One gave him chills…
The other—
Made him…
Chen Sheng didn’t even know how to describe it.
He was still lost in thought when he felt his senior’s hand tighten around his.
“Chen Sheng, you don’t want to?”
“It’s okay if not. I’ll find another way.”
Chen Sheng looked down at their clasped hands—interlaced fingers, his senior’s warmth seeping into his own palm.
His face turned red.
But since his senior was putting so much trust in him—
He had to believe in him too.
After thinking hard, Chen Sheng said,
“I… I’m willing. It’s just—I’ve never dated before. I don’t know if I can act convincingly. I’m afraid I’ll mess it up.”
“Chen Sheng. Look at me.”
At the sound of his senior’s voice, Chen Sheng instinctively looked up—
And fell right into those deep, dark eyes.
His body shivered, and it felt like electricity ran through his chest.
“I haven’t dated before either. But we don’t have time, Chen Sheng. Let’s start with something small—stop calling me ‘Senior.’ Just say my name.”
Call… call his senior by name?!
Chen Sheng’s face went completely red.
He instinctively wanted to look away from that intense gaze.
But he reminded himself—his senior was doing all this to help him.
So he had to cooperate fully.
Just a name. Pretending to be his boyfriend. He could do this.
It was better than being… with that thing.
Thinking this—
Chen Sheng looked at his senior, and with a stammered, nervous voice, said,
“Gu Zhen.”
“Mm, not bad.”
His senior smiled approvingly.
“But that’s still not intimate enough.”
“T-Then what’s more intimate?”
“You’re younger than me, right? How about calling me… ‘Brother Gu’?”
Chen Sheng instantly turned bright red.
