Chapter 19 – From Pretending to Real
This was way too mushy. Way too intimate.
Chen Sheng couldn’t handle it. Even though he’d mentally prepared himself, he still couldn’t get the words out.
It felt like his lips were glued shut.
Then he remembered what Senior had said earlier—that he had the ability to block that thing’s perception.
So wouldn’t it be fine as long as it couldn’t hear them speak?
“G-Gu Zhen, didn’t you say you could block it? Can’t you just stop it from hearing us?”
“Chen Sheng.”
His senior looked at him seriously.
“It’s not that easy to fool. We need to make it fully believe that we’re actually together. Otherwise, all of this would be pointless. And you don’t want to see your friends at the academy get hurt, do you? So we have to act quickly, grab its attention, and lure it out of the academy. Only then can I take care of it.”
Chen Sheng looked at his senior’s expression.
He understood.
He…
He thought about Zhang Jun, still back at school.
And Zhang Jun’s roommates.
He didn’t want anything to happen to them.
It was just a name. That’s all.
Nothing difficult.
Yes—just a name.
Chen Sheng struggled for a long time, then finally, very softly, called out:
“Gu… gege.”
(Gege = older brother, often used affectionately or intimately)
Right after he said it, he saw the brilliant smile spreading on his senior’s face, the way the corners of his lips lifted.
“Mn, baobao.”
(Baobao = baby, sweetheart)
Chen Sheng’s face went red. His heartbeat sped up.
He had thin skin. A simple word was enough.
Every emotion showed clearly on his face.
And of course, the senior sitting across from him had picked up on everything.
“Alright, baobao, you must be tired. Let’s eat something, then go rest early, okay?”
Being called baobao made Chen Sheng’s whole body feel tingly and soft.
Even though he hadn’t done anything, he felt exhausted.
He pulled out his phone.
Checked the time.
Still early.
“Gu… Gu gege, isn’t it a bit too early?”
His senior replied,
“Then baobao, after dinner, whatever you want to do, I’ll join you.”
Chen Sheng didn’t really have anything in mind.
He said, “I can go by myself, just a walk or something.”
“Alright, but baobao, don’t go too far.”
“Mm.”
After dinner—
Chen Sheng headed out.
He didn’t dare go far.
Downstairs from the apartment building was a street.
Chen Sheng took a walk along that street and quickly returned to the apartment.
Their place was on the 10th floor.
He had to take the elevator up.
He entered the elevator—alone.
He pressed the button for the 10th floor.
The elevator started ascending.
But when it reached the 10th floor—
It didn’t stop. It kept going up.
The building had 27 floors.
Chen Sheng watched as the elevator passed the 27th floor… and then stopped.
Panicked, he took out his phone—only to find there was no signal.
At that moment, the elevator doors began to slowly open.
Outside—there was nothing.
Just violent wind howling in.
Chen Sheng could even see the building across the street.
The elevator opened directly to the outside—wide open and empty.
Looking down, he saw he was dozens of meters above the ground…
His fear of heights kicked in instantly.
His head spun, and he collapsed into the corner of the elevator.
Then the doors began to slowly close again.
The control panel beside the doors flickered red—all the floor numbers lit up, then went dark again.
Next, the elevator began to descend.
And it didn’t stop until it passed floor -1…
This time, when the doors opened—
What Chen Sheng saw made him stop breathing.
Outside—
Was the dorm at the academy.
And on his bed was a twisted, pitch-black mass.
That thing was hungrily sniffing his bedsheets.
A cold, whispering voice echoed around him.
“Chen Sheng, why did you leave?”
“Why?”
“I’m going to kill your friends. Kill them all.”
Chen Sheng curled up in the corner of the elevator, shaking in terror.
At that moment, despite his phone having no signal—
It buzzed with several incoming messages.
[I’m always watching you:] You think this way, I can’t find you? Can’t catch you, Chen Sheng? Hiding beside that Gu Zhen is useless. I will come find you. I’ll kill him right in front of you.
[I’m always watching you:] You can’t escape. You can’t escape. You can’t escape. You can’t escape. You can’t escape. I’ll come find you. I’ll come find you…
With a zzzt, the screen went black.
And reflected in the dark screen—
Was Chen Sheng’s own bloodless, pale face.
The elevator doors began to close again.
Just before they shut completely—
A single eye suddenly appeared in the narrow gap.
That eye stared directly at Chen Sheng.
“I’ll come find you.”
“Ahhh!”
Chen Sheng let out a terrified scream.
Then he heard a voice nearby.
“Hey, kid—are you alright?”
Chen Sheng, face pale, snapped out of it.
Beside him were several strangers—men and women.
They were all looking at him.
He looked again—he was still in the elevator.
Had that thing clouded his vision?
When he entered the elevator, he’d been alone.
But now…
That meant—it had locked onto him the moment he entered.
Which was why he hadn’t seen anyone else.
And now—the elevator had just arrived at the 10th floor.
“I… I’m fine. Thank you.”
Chen Sheng quickly thanked them and hurried out of the elevator.
When he knocked on the door, Gu Zhen opened it—
And Chen Sheng couldn’t hold back anymore.
He burst into tears.
“S-Senior Gu… It—it said it’s coming for me. It knows… what do we do now?”
Completely lost, Chen Sheng pulled out his phone—now working again—and showed Gu Zhen the messages from I’m always watching you.
Gu Zhen’s face darkened.
“Damn it. I didn’t expect it to act so soon. You really are its weakness. For you, it’s willing to do anything.”
“Chen Sheng,” he said, stepping closer.
“Since it’s already come, we need to act faster.”
Chen Sheng came back to himself, frowning.
“But… if it’s already here, and it knows—then isn’t there no need to…”
Before he could finish, Gu Zhen sighed.
“Originally, we could’ve just faked it a little. But now… we need to turn the fake into real.”
Fake into real?
Chen Sheng’s eyes widened in disbelief.
They were clearly speaking the same language.
So why did he suddenly not understand?
“What do you mean, ‘fake into real’?”
Gu Zhen leaned in and said,
“We have to go all the way now. It’s already here. But it didn’t come for me—it came for you first. That means it still doesn’t fully believe us. It’s seen through our plan. So now the only way to truly convince it… is to make everything real. Nothing will convince it more than us truly being together.”
Go all the way?!
Chen Sheng stared at him.
Then looked at himself.
But… they were both men…
And the thing was already enraged, already threatening to kill Gu Zhen.
If they really did it…
Wouldn’t that—
No. No way.
Just the thought of being with his senior—
“Isn’t there any other way, Senior?”
“There is.”
Chen Sheng immediately asked, “What is it?”
“I’ll go find it—and die with it.”
Die together?!
Gu Zhen wanted to perish with that thing?
Chen Sheng’s face turned ashen, and he shook his head.
“No. You can’t die with it. This all started because of me. If anyone should die—it’s me.”
But Gu Zhen replied,
“It won’t kill you. And you can’t kill it. It’ll only capture you. So now, there are only two options. I know you don’t want to. I know it’s hard to accept. It’s fine. I’ll go now. Once I’m gone, you can return to a normal life. Just… don’t forget your senior. Burn me some incense during holidays or something…”
Chen Sheng hurriedly covered Gu Zhen’s mouth.
“I… I choose the first one.”
He didn’t want Gu Zhen to die.
This all happened because of him.
And more importantly…
He wasn’t just admiring his senior anymore…
He… he liked him.
“Are you sure?” Gu Zhen asked. “Because if you are—we have to start right away.”
Chen Sheng snapped out of it, blushing deeply.
“W-Wait.”
He quickly pulled out his phone and began searching.
He’d never been in a relationship before…
He didn’t know what to do…
Plus, Gu Zhen was taller than him…
No—he couldn’t let his senior get hurt.
As he browsed, Gu Zhen leaned over.
“What are you looking at?”
Flustered, Chen Sheng quickly closed his phone.
“N-Nothing.”
Then, stammering, he added,
“Gu… Senior, I—I won’t let it hurt you.”
Gu Zhen: ……….
“You don’t need to look anything up.”
And in the next second—Gu Zhen snatched his phone away.
“Don’t be scared. I’ll go slow.”
Chen Sheng stared blankly at him.
He was confused and bewildered.
But then—
He thought again.
Slow is good.
Lost in thought—
He didn’t even notice when Gu Zhen pulled him into the room.
And by the time he realized—
He had already been pushed down onto the bed…
