Chapter 25 – A Bad Premonition
Chen Sheng walked into the kitchen and saw Senior Gu chopping vegetables.
Due to the stormy weather, even with the lights on inside, the room still felt dim.
Chen Sheng watched as Senior Gu’s slender hands gripped the knife, and the bulging veins on his hand were clearly visible.
“Senior.”
He called out, and saw Senior Gu pause and turn to look at him. “What is it, Shengsheng? Are you scared?”
Chen Sheng shook his head. “No, it’s just… I have a really bad feeling, like something’s going to happen.”
After hearing that, Senior Gu comforted him, “Nothing will happen, don’t worry. I’m here. Even if something does happen, I’ll protect you, Shengsheng.
Alright, just wait a bit longer, it’s almost done. I’m about to stir-fry.”
“Okay.”
Chen Sheng responded, but the unease in his heart only grew stronger.
He took out his phone and sent a message to Zhang Jun.
Because of that thing, everything got delayed, and he hadn’t gotten a chance to tell Zhang Jun yet. By now, Zhang Jun must be worried sick.
Chen Sheng: Zhang Jun, that thing’s already been seriously injured by Senior and ran off. It probably won’t show up again anytime soon.
After sending the message, he didn’t receive a reply.
Just then, a flash of lightning streaked across the window, followed by a thunderclap and fierce rain that pounded like crashing waves, echoing the turmoil inside Chen Sheng’s heart.
His expression darkened. Zhang Jun hadn’t replied, and coupled with his intense unease, a terrifying thought struck him—could something have happened to Zhang Jun?
Did that thing fail to kill him, then run back to school and attack Zhang Jun?
Just thinking about it made Chen Sheng feel weak in the knees.
Panic rising, he ignored the pouring rain outside and was about to head for school.
Anxious and distraught, he said to Senior Gu, “Senior, that thing must’ve gone after Zhang Jun. I have to go to school now.”
After speaking, he saw that Senior Gu didn’t react at all. He continued working as if nothing had been said, with not even the slightest change in expression.
“Senior!”
Chen Sheng was so anxious he was nearly in tears, when Senior Gu finally said, “Shengsheng, your friend will be fine.”
“But… but he hasn’t replied to me!”
Just as he spoke, a message notification popped up. He looked down and saw it was from Zhang Jun. In an instant, the heavy anxiety that had filled him faded like a receding tide.
He smiled with relief and opened the message.
Zhang Jun: That’s great. That perverted thing won’t bother you anymore. By the way, when are you coming back to school?
Chen Sheng quickly replied.
Chen Sheng: Soon. I should be back by tomorrow.
Right after that, Zhang Jun responded:
Zhang Jun: Then let me treat you to a meal when you’re back. That thing’s finally been dealt with—we should celebrate and relax. It’s been a while since we ate together.
Chen Sheng: Sure.
Then he remembered he hadn’t used the money Zhang Jun gave him to rent a place, so he quickly returned it.
After that, he messaged:
Chen Sheng: Thanks, Zhang Jun. I didn’t use the money. I’ve also decided not to rent a place anymore. I’ll be moving back into the dorms with Senior.
Just as he sent that, he noticed Zhang Jun was typing for quite a while before finally sending:
Zhang Jun: Chen Sheng, why exactly is that senior helping you? He has the ability to deal with supernatural things—it’s pretty suspicious. And don’t you think all of this is a bit too coincidental?
First, that thing starts bothering you. Then just when you’re about to leave school, that senior who’s always been away suddenly returns. If he had the power to deal with it, why didn’t he act sooner? Why wait until something bad happened?
Also, why does he need to take you with him? Could it be that he has some ulterior motive for you? What if he’s the one who orchestrated everything from the start?
Chen Sheng stared blankly at the long message Zhang Jun had sent.
He read through every word carefully.
Although… he had never thought of these things before.
But he didn’t believe that Senior Gu was that kind of person.
Senior had already explained why he didn’t act sooner.
As for taking him along—that was because the thing was after him specifically. He had to be there to lure it out.
Although the thing wasn’t defeated, it was seriously injured—and all of that was thanks to Senior.
Without him, that thing would probably still be haunting him.
As for whether Senior had any hidden motives… he had nothing worth scheming over. And Senior had said he liked him.
So it must be because of that—that Senior was helping him.
Besides, Senior really was a good person…
While Chen Sheng was lost in thought, he didn’t notice that Senior Gu, who was still cooking with his back to the window, had turned his head entirely toward him.
His expression was twisted and manic, and his neck wasn’t even strained—his face was unnaturally turned toward Chen Sheng, clearly able to see every message on his phone.
But Chen Sheng, focused on his screen, remained completely unaware.
He continued typing.
Chen Sheng: Senior is a good person. It’s not like what you’re thinking. I don’t have anything he could gain from. Also, he has no reason to orchestrate everything. Back then, he didn’t act not because he didn’t want to—but because he had his reasons.
I’m going back with him because he needs my help. That thing is after me. I have to lure it out.
After he sent the message, Zhang Jun quickly replied.
Zhang Jun: Alright then. But I didn’t say all that for nothing. I’ve thought about it seriously. Just be careful, Chen Sheng.
Hurry back. There are some things we need to talk about in person.
Chen Sheng read the message and knew Zhang Jun said those things out of concern.
He replied:
Chen Sheng: When I get back, I’ll come find you first thing.
Zhang Jun: Okay. I’ll be waiting.
After sending the message, Chen Sheng looked up to see Senior Gu finishing up the stir-fry.
He was plating the dish, then began cooking the next one.
Chen Sheng watched quietly from the side.
Once two dishes and a soup were done, Chen Sheng helped bring them to the table.
Senior Gu also came over with the rice.
He laid out the chopsticks and bowls in front of Chen Sheng and said, “Let’s eat. Sorry to keep you waiting. You must be starving, Shengsheng.”
Chen Sheng shook his head. “No, it’s fine, Gu…”
He hesitated. He really couldn’t bring himself to say that overly affectionate name. Looking down, he said, “Can I call you something else? I really can’t say that name.”
“What would Shengsheng like to call me instead?”
Chen Sheng thought for a moment and said, “Just… Senior Gu, is that okay?”
After saying it, he felt a bit uneasy.
But then Senior Gu smiled and replied, “Of course. So Shengsheng still prefers the senior-junior dynamic, huh? Then I’ll call you Shengsheng-xuedi from now on. Sounds nice and intimate.”
Chen Sheng let out a breath of relief.
Finally, no more of that overly mushy nickname. Every time he heard it, it gave him goosebumps.
“Alright then, Shengsheng-xuedi, let’s eat.”
“Mm.”
Chen Sheng responded and picked up his chopsticks.
His eyes lit up instantly.
Senior’s cooking was really good.
Although he could cook too, he only knew how to make egg fried rice.
Chen Sheng was so impressed he couldn’t help but praise him. “Senior Gu, your food is amazing.”
“If you like it, eat more.”
Senior Gu smiled, then picked up a big portion of food and placed it in Chen Sheng’s bowl.
“Thank you, Senior Gu.”
Chen Sheng finished all the food he was given, and after eating an entire bowl of rice, he felt full—mostly from eating too many side dishes.
After he finished, he wiped his mouth with a napkin.
“Senior Gu, when are we going back to school?”
“When does Shengsheng-xuedi want to go back?”
“Tomorrow. Is that okay?”
Chen Sheng figured it was about time. That thing was injured now and probably wouldn’t show up for a while.
Also, he’d been staying at Senior’s house for quite some time—it felt like he was imposing.
Even though they were now technically together, he still felt he was bothering Senior.
Besides, staying here with Senior, eating his food, sleeping together… it really did feel like cohabiting.
