Chapter 26: Which One Is the Real Senior?
As soon as the thought crossed his mind, Chen Sheng’s face turned red instantly.
He stood up and saw that Senior Gu stood up as well.
Seeing there was still a lot of food left in Senior’s bowl, Chen Sheng couldn’t help but ask, “Senior, you’re not eating anymore?”
“I’m done. I’ll clean up. Shengsheng-xuedi, you go rest first.”
Of course, Chen Sheng couldn’t just go rest without doing anything. He quickly picked up the dishes on the table and said, “Senior, I’ll clean up. You cooked dinner, so let me wash the dishes.”
“In that case, okay. Shengsheng-xuedi, I’ll go tidy up the room first.”
“Alright.”
Chen Sheng took the dishes to the kitchen and placed them in the sink.
Then he grabbed a rag and returned to the table to wipe it down thoroughly before heading back to the kitchen to finish washing the dishes.
As he washed, all he could hear was the howling wind and the pounding of rain against the windows—a harsh, shrill, chaotic sound.
Apart from that, there was nothing else. But the sight outside, paired with the noise and the twisted, claw-like tree branches thrashing in the storm, made him think of that thing again.
Unable to stop himself, he turned his head slightly to check whether Senior had finished tidying up the room—but noticed that the lights in the living room had somehow grown dimmer and dimmer.
He quickly turned back, wanting to finish washing the dishes as fast as possible.
But just then, he saw that the water in the sink had, at some unknown point, turned bright red—as if bl00d was gushing out of the faucet in huge amounts. The thick, pungent stench of bl00d filled the air.
Not only that, when Chen Sheng panicked and dropped the bowl, he noticed his hands were completely stained bright red too, as if they had been soaked in bl00d.
When he lifted his hands, they were dyed entirely red—like bloodied hands.
The sight shocked Chen Sheng to his core. He immediately wanted to find Senior.
But suddenly, the water in the sink returned to normal—as if everything he had just seen was an illusion.
He looked at his hands again—they were also back to normal.
Still shaken, he looked up. The sink was directly beneath the window, and in the window’s reflection, he could see his pale, bloodless face.
But now, besides his reflection, there was another one—a tall, grotesquely twisted shadow, even taller than him. It was blurry and distorted, with two razor-sharp claws that were impossible to ignore.
The claws were stretching toward his head. Just one look and Chen Sheng could tell—they could pierce straight through his skull, tearing his scalp and brain apart…
His body trembled violently, and he let out a terrified scream.
He flung a bowl backward with all his strength and stumbled into the living room, terrified, shouting for Senior Gu as he ran.
But just as he entered the living room, the lights began flickering with a loud crackling noise—then, the entire room was swallowed in darkness.
The lights went out.
In that pitch-black space where he couldn’t see his hand in front of his face, Chen Sheng groped about, screaming in fear and panic.
“Senior! Senior Gu! Gu Zhen! Gu…!”
Terrified to the point of tears and incoherence, he called out desperately.
He kept fumbling through the dark, knowing that that thing must have caught up with him.
He could only continue calling for his senior—
Finally, after several cries, he heard a response.
“I’m here. Come here, Shengsheng-xuedi. Quickly, come here.”
“I’m here…”
The voice came from not far away.
Chen Sheng moved in the direction of the voice—but after just a few steps, he suddenly remembered that he had his phone and could use its flashlight.
He pulled it from his pocket. The moment the screen lit up—
He saw that the spot where the voice had just come from—where he had been heading—was not his senior.
It was that grotesquely distorted shadowy figure.
It had been imitating Senior’s voice.
“I’m right here, Shengsheng-xuedi. Why haven’t you come over?”
It mimicked Senior’s speech with eerie precision, but its claws were raised in midair, poised to strike.
If Chen Sheng had walked forward just now, he would’ve been impaled on the spot.
Seeing this, his face turned deathly pale. His legs gave out, and he collapsed to the ground.
At the same time, the phone screen went dark.
No matter how much he pressed, the phone wouldn’t turn back on.
The room once again fell into complete darkness.
Relying on the brief glimpse he had seen with the flashlight, Chen Sheng began crawling toward the direction of the room.
His legs were too weak to move properly, so he had no choice but to crawl, inch by inch, trembling and sobbing.
Eventually, he reached the door and started knocking frantically.
“Senior! Senior!”
After knocking several times, the door creaked open.
Chen Sheng scrambled inside, slammed the door shut behind him, and leaned against it, barely able to stand.
His face was streaked with tears and fear. “Senior, where are you? I’m so scared! It’s back! It wants to kill me!”
He groped around the room in the dark.
But before he could find anything, he heard the creaking of the door behind him again.
Terrified, he curled up in a corner.
“Se…Senior? Is that you?”
“It’s me, Shengsheng-xuedi. I’m here. Don’t be afraid.”
How could he not be afraid? That thing had just used Senior’s voice to try and trick him.
And now, he couldn’t see anything, and had nothing to use for light.
Even more terrifying—after the voice, there were no footsteps.
Chen Sheng, horrified, crawled toward the bed and immediately slid underneath it to hide.
Once under the bed, he held his breath and cried silently.
Where was Senior?
Had that thing killed him already?
Wild thoughts raced through his mind.
Suddenly, a voice came from right beside his ear, incredibly close.
“Shengsheng-xuedi, I’m here. I found you.”
Then Chen Sheng felt something sharp pressing into his skin—it stung.
“Ah!”
He scrambled to crawl out from under the bed, but as he did, another voice came from equally nearby.
“Shengsheng-xuedi, it’s me! Don’t be afraid—come here!”
At the same time, another voice came from behind him.
“Shengsheng-xuedi, don’t go over there! I’m the real one! Come back!”
It sounded just like Senior’s voice, but Chen Sheng felt sharp claws dig into his ankle.
He immediately broke into a cold sweat from the pain and screamed. No longer daring to hesitate, he clawed his way toward the direction of the voice at the foot of the bed.
The claws behind him tore at his ankle—he felt the skin rip open.
Reaching into the dark, crying, he said, “Senior… Senior Gu, please save me. I’m begging you…”
Right then, someone took his hand.
But what should have been warm reassurance came with a bone-chilling cold.
And at that moment—the room lights came on.
Chen Sheng’s tear-streaked face lit up in hope… only to freeze in horror.
He stared, eyes wide with fear.
Because the thing holding his hand—was not a hand at all.
It was a face.
A face blurred and twisted beyond recognition, with a mouth stretched open into a terrifying grin.
“Chen Sheng… in the end, you still chose me.”
As it spoke, its long, thin tongue slithered across Chen Sheng’s palm—cold and sticky, sending chills through his spine.
Eyes wide, Chen Sheng yanked his hand back in terror.
He turned his head—and finally saw Senior crawling out from under the bed.
His face was covered in footprints—kicks from when Chen Sheng had panicked earlier.
But Senior didn’t seem to care about the bruises on his face or the stream of bl00d trickling from his nose.
Chen Sheng didn’t understand what was happening. He had sensed the presence under the bed earlier—he was sure it was that thing.
So… Senior had been there all along?
It was that thing that had tricked him—made him believe…
Chen Sheng was instantly overwhelmed with guilt and regret. Still trembling, he scooted backward and looked at Senior.
“I’m sorry, Senior Gu, I…”
Before he could finish, Senior looked at him gently and said, “Shengsheng-xuedi, stay put.”
Then with a powerful kick, he sent the horrific creature flying out of the room and slammed the door shut again.
Chen Sheng looked down at his ankle—searing pain throbbed from a deep wound, with flesh torn open and bl00d pouring out.
He remembered Senior had warned him how dangerous that thing was. Even after being seriously injured, it still came to kill him.
And it could even imitate Senior’s appearance and voice so perfectly…
Realizing this, Chen Sheng scrambled toward the door, hearing loud bangs from outside.
Then, everything fell silent.
A moment later, footsteps approached, followed by the sound of the door opening.
Senior Gu stepped in—his face battered and bruised, his clothes torn to shreds, hanging off him like rags.
“Shengsheng-xuedi, don’t be afraid. I’ve driven it away.”
Upon hearing that, Chen Sheng crawled over and threw his arms around Senior’s leg.
He sobbed uncontrollably, too terrified to speak.
Senior crouched down and pulled him into a tight embrace, gently patting his back.
“It’s alright now. I’m here.”
Chen Sheng cried in his arms, unaware—
That the face of “Senior Gu” holding him was beginning to twist and blur with excitement.
And that terrifying, grotesque face—
Was the same one that had just frightened him to tears… helpless, and full of despair.
