Chapter 28 – Can I Take a Look?
Senior Gu carried the items over to him and then reached out a hand to help him up.
Chen Sheng hadn’t been able to find the clothes the senior had prepared for him earlier, so he had just thrown on one of the senior’s shirts. It was quite large.
So, when the senior helped him up, the collar hung open, exposing a large area of skin.
Chen Sheng noticed immediately—one glance downward and he could see everything. His face flushed bright red.
The senior set the items aside and said, “Shengsheng-xuedi, let’s get you changed before we head out.”
Chen Sheng nodded and sat back down on the couch, watching as the senior rummaged through a bag and pulled out a shirt.
“Arms up.”
Obediently, Chen Sheng raised his arms. The oversized shirt was pulled off, and the senior helped him into the clean shirt, which fit him perfectly.
Once dressed, Chen Sheng saw the senior’s gaze linger intently on his neck, and he suddenly remembered what had happened the night before—how the senior had left a mark there…
His face flushed deeper.
Chen Sheng didn’t know what his neck looked like now, only that the senior had left some sort of mark on it.
If he had looked in the mirror just then, he would’ve seen the very obvious bite mark and the red print surrounding it vividly etched into his skin.
The way the senior stared made his cheeks burn. He wanted to raise a hand to cover it, but that felt pointless and childish.
So he braced himself on the sofa and stood up. “S-Senior, let’s go.”
“Alright.”
The senior reached out and gently rubbed his fingers over Chen Sheng’s neck, then took out a protective neckband from his bag and wrapped it around his neck in one smooth motion.
Chen Sheng had noticed the neckband earlier—there was a line of letters on it, seemingly an abbreviation…
Was that… the senior’s initials?
Chen Sheng’s eyes widened. He heard the senior say, “Shengsheng-xuedi, leaving a mark and having physical contact isn’t enough. That thing—we both know it’s not human—it’s cunning and relentless. So just to be safe, wear this. It’ll keep you out of danger. In fact, it might even save your life. Besides… you don’t want to walk into class with that mark I left on your neck showing, do you?”
Chen Sheng was surprised at how thoroughly the senior had thought things through.
Still, the neckband… it looked like—Especially with the senior’s name stitched into it—it almost felt like a declaration that Chen Sheng belonged to him.
But compared to the risk to his life, Chen Sheng chose safety. The senior was doing it for his protection. He shouldn’t overthink it.
He didn’t notice the dark glint in Senior Gu’s eyes as he thought this.
When he finished, the senior picked up the bags, supported him gently, and they headed out to catch a cab. Soon, they arrived back at the school.
Although it had only been a few days, Chen Sheng felt like it had been forever. It was as if he hadn’t been back in ages.
Before all this, his college life had been filled with constant fear and anxiety—he couldn’t even sleep peacefully.
But now… everything was different. He had a partner. He was with the senior, someone powerful who could protect him.
Even if that monstrous thing was still lurking somewhere in the school, watching him from the shadows, it wouldn’t dare approach him anymore—not now.
Chen Sheng felt cheerful, his earlier fear completely forgotten. Now he could finally go find Zhang Jun.
He needed to tell him everything—what had happened over the past few days, and that he was now with the senior.
When they arrived at the dorm, the senior set down the bags while Chen Sheng sat on his bed and received a message from Zhang Jun.
Zhang Jun: I saw you’re back, Chen Sheng! Come find me, quick!
Chen Sheng glanced at the senior, who was still tidying up, and said, “Senior, I’m going to see my friend for a bit. I’ll be back later.”
The senior paused, then said, “Don’t go too far, Shengsheng-xuedi. Whatever you do, don’t leave the campus.”
Chen Sheng was a little puzzled, but before he could ask, another message came in from Zhang Jun.
Zhang Jun: Hurry up! I’m waiting for you downstairs.
Chen Sheng looked at his phone and quickly told the senior, “Got it, Senior. I’m heading out now.”
“Okay, but come back early. Oh, and take this.”
The senior handed him a walking cane.
Seeing it, Chen Sheng felt deeply touched. He had no idea when the senior had prepared something like this.
He accepted it gratefully. “Thank you, Senior.”
The senior asked, “Want me to walk you there, Shengsheng-xuedi?”
Chen Sheng was about to say yes—he had actually wanted to introduce the senior to Zhang Jun.
But then more messages from Zhang Jun came flooding in:
Zhang Jun: Just the two of us, okay? Don’t bring anyone else. I need to talk to you.
Zhang Jun: Are you on your way? If it’s hard to walk, want me to come up to the stairwell and help you?
Zhang Jun: Hurry up! I can’t wait any longer!
Seeing all these messages, Chen Sheng suddenly felt a strange discomfort. Something about them didn’t sit right with him.
Still, he didn’t think too hard about it. “It’s fine, Senior. I can go myself. You can keep unpacking.”
He said that and quickly left the dorm with his cane.
As he reached the stairwell, he saw Zhang Jun coming up to meet him.
“Chen Sheng! No wonder you were so slow—your ankle must be seriously injured. Come on, I’m taking you to the hospital right now.”
Remembering what the senior had told him, Chen Sheng quickly said, “No need. It doesn’t hurt at all anymore, and there’s no swelling. I don’t need to go to the hospital.”
“What do you mean no need?”
Zhang Jun didn’t give him a chance to argue—he grabbed Chen Sheng’s arm and saw the cane. Without asking, he took it from him.
“What’s this? Did you buy it yourself, or did that Gu Zhen senior give it to you?”
Chen Sheng felt uncomfortable at having the cane taken. He took it back and said, “Senior Gu Zhen gave it to me.”
“Oh, I figured. Like you’d prepare something like this for yourself. If you ask me, that senior gave you a cane because he doesn’t want you to get better. Didn’t even take you to the hospital—probably on purpose.”
Chen Sheng frowned. He knew Zhang Jun meant well, but hearing him talk like this—it felt like he had some kind of bias against the senior.
There was a sharpness to his words… and an odd, jealous tone?
The thought startled Chen Sheng. Zhang Jun—jealous? Of him?
No way.
Meanwhile, Zhang Jun kept talking non-stop.
“Alright, alright, I get it—you care about that Gu Zhen guy. But let’s get to the hospital first.” By now, they had walked a good distance from the dorm—nearing the school gates.
Thinking of the senior’s warning, Chen Sheng didn’t understand why, but he felt the senior must have had a good reason.
He pulled away from Zhang Jun’s hand, leaning on the cane. “I told you—I don’t need to go to the hospital. I’m fine, Zhang Jun.”
Zhang Jun’s eyes suddenly turned red.
Chen Sheng was caught off guard. He hadn’t meant to speak so harshly—he just didn’t want to go.
Then he heard Zhang Jun say, “Okay, no hospital. How about a meal? Won’t even eat with me? I have so much to say to you—and didn’t you say you wanted to talk to me, too?
I feel like ever since you got with that Gu Zhen guy, you’ve changed.”
Chen Sheng looked at Zhang Jun’s expression and listened to his words—he couldn’t bring himself to reject him anymore.
He figured it wouldn’t hurt to go out for just a bit. He had the senior’s mark and the neckband for protection. That thing wouldn’t dare come near him now.
After thinking it through, he said, “Where are we eating? I can’t be too late—I need to get back soon.”
“Got it.”
Zhang Jun’s face immediately lit up with a smile.
They left campus together and hailed a cab.
After a short ride, they arrived at a commercial street.
Zhang Jun supported him and asked, “What do you feel like eating, Chen Sheng?”
Chen Sheng looked around. “Anything’s fine. You decide.”
“Alright, I’ll pick then.”
Zhang Jun led him into a restaurant. After ordering a few dishes, the two sat down to eat and chat.
Chen Sheng told him everything that had happened over the past few days—including his relationship with Senior Gu Zhen.
When he finished, he looked at Zhang Jun, expecting some kind of reaction—shock, surprise, something.
But instead, Zhang Jun was just staring straight at his neck. To be exact—at the neckband Senior Gu had made him wear.
“What’s that, Chen Sheng? Can you take it off and let me see it?”
