Chapter 29 – You Can’t Escape
Chen Sheng noticed how Zhang Jun was staring directly at the neckband around his neck, and he instinctively reached up to touch it.
This was something the senior had given him, something that made him feel safe. The senior had even said that it could save his life in a critical moment. So there was no way he was going to take it off.
Besides, if he did, the mark the senior had left all over his neck would be completely exposed.
If Zhang Jun or anyone else in the restaurant saw that, it would be extremely awkward.
Thinking this through, Chen Sheng rejected the request outright.
“Sorry, Zhang Jun. This is a protective band. It’s really important to me and I can’t take it off. I need to wear it all the time, so I can’t show it to you.”
After he finished speaking, Zhang Jun finally looked away from the neckband and turned his gaze to Chen Sheng instead.
“That was from that senior Gu Zhen too, wasn’t it?”
Chen Sheng didn’t plan to hide it and nodded.
“Yeah, it’s to protect me from that thing.”
“I see. So now that senior is more important to you than I am. Even something he gave you—a cane, a piece of cloth—is worth more in your eyes than I am.”
Chen Sheng quickly tried to explain, “It’s not like that! You’re important too, Zhang Jun. You’re my friend, and the senior is… someone I like. It’s just that I can’t show you this because it’s not just a gift—it could literally save my life.”
“Really now?”
Zhang Jun lowered his head. “Can it really save your life when it counts?”
The sudden question caught Chen Sheng off guard, and he didn’t know how to respond.
Could it really save him? He wasn’t sure. That’s just what the senior had said.
But before he could think of a reply, Zhang Jun smiled again. “It’s fine, I was just curious. Let’s eat.”
“Alright.”
Seeing Zhang Jun smile again, Chen Sheng finally relaxed and continued eating.
After they finished the meal,
Zhang Jun helped Chen Sheng out of the restaurant. It was still early, and the street was lively with people.
Zhang Jun pulled out his phone. “Let’s head back to school.”
Chen Sheng nodded, feeling a little guilty. He looked at Zhang Jun and said, “Sorry. Once all this is over, I’ll make it up to you with a proper meal. Also… Zhang Jun, are you really not going to meet Senior Gu Zhen?”
After speaking, he saw Zhang Jun lower his head and mutter, “We’ve already met. More than once, actually. No need to meet again.”
“Huh?”
Chen Sheng was puzzled. When had Zhang Jun met the senior, and more than once?
Before he could ask more, the car arrived.
Zhang Jun helped him into the car, then got in himself.
During the ride, Neither of them spoke. The silence in the car felt heavy.
Chen Sheng didn’t know how long they had been driving, but when he noticed the roads outside growing darker and more remote, unease started creeping in.
Just as he was about to speak, the car finally exited that eerie, shadowy stretch of road.
Streetlamps appeared, and soon after, the school gates came into view. Once the car stopped, Zhang Jun helped him out and supported him through the gate.
By the time they reached the dorm building, Chen Sheng felt something was off.
It was still early, yet the dorm was completely silent. Too silent. It was as if no one was inside.
There wasn’t a single sound. It felt like the building was completely deserted.
But Chen Sheng checked again. It was definitely their dorm.
He was just about to say something to Zhang Jun when the latter helped him to the stairwell and said, “Chen Sheng, go up on your own. I’m heading back to my room—feeling a little tired.”
Chen Sheng watched as Zhang Jun turned and walked down the stairs, head low, looking genuinely exhausted.
He figured Zhang Jun must be upset because of him. After all, he’d been in a bad mood all day and had helped support him the whole time.
Feeling guilty and down himself, Chen Sheng turned and started climbing the stairs with his cane.
But as he turned around, he didn’t notice that, from the stairwell corner, Zhang Jun’s head twisted a full 360 degrees. His smile stretched all the way up to his ears.
His neck elongated grotesquely, stretching out and slithering silently behind Chen Sheng.
As Chen Sheng struggled up the stairs with his cane, a strange chill crept up his back.
He paused and looked behind him—but saw nothing.
Once he reached his dorm room, he felt a wave of excitement—he’d get to see the senior again.
But the moment he opened the door, a thick, metallic scent hit his nose—so strong it made him want to vomit.
He tried to hold back the nausea as unease and fear exploded within him. With trembling hands, he pushed the door fully open.
When he turned on the light, the floor was soaked in vivid, blinding red—bl00d. So much bl00d.
If he hadn’t had his cane to support him, he might have collapsed on the spot.
He forced himself to move deeper into the room—and there, on the bed, was the senior, bleeding from every orifice.
Bl00d oozed from his body, pooling on the floor. His eyes were completely gone.
Shock and disbelief flooded Chen Sheng’s gaze. Tears welled up and fell uncontrollably.
How… how could this happen?
He gripped the bl00d-stained cane and hobbled to the bed, reaching out to check.
The senior’s skin was cold—completely devoid of warmth.
And just as his hand touched him,
the senior’s cracked, bloodless lips moved.
“Shengsheng junior… it’s all your fault. It’s because of you that I died so horribly.”
“Ah!”
Chen Sheng let out a terrified scream.
The senior suddenly stood up from the bed, empty sockets staring straight at him.
His skin looked like nothing more than loose flesh—fluttering as it moved toward him.
No—that’s not the senior. That’s not him…
Terrified, Chen Sheng fled the dorm, barely managing to close the door behind him.
In the hallway, he saw a figure standing at the far end of the dimly lit corridor.
He clutched his cane tightly, his palms slick with sweat—so slippery he could barely hold on. Staring at the figure, he cried out, “Who… who are you? Are you that thing? Come out! Stop pretending and show yourself!”
The figure slowly stepped forward, revealing a pale-faced Zhang Jun, looking horrified. “Chen Sheng… all my roommates are dead. What’s going on?”
Seeing that it was Zhang Jun, Chen Sheng didn’t rush over immediately.
But Zhang Jun kept approaching with a look of terror.
“Was it that thing that killed them all? Wang Gang and the others—everyone in the dorm, maybe even in the whole school… they’re all dead. That thing must still be here! Let’s go, Chen Sheng—we have to get out of here now, before it’s too late!”
His words struck deep panic in Chen Sheng’s heart. The cane in his hand felt like it would slip at any moment.
Zhang Jun rushed up and grabbed him tightly.
“Come on! Why are you just standing there?!”
Just then, the dorm room door burst open, and that same “senior,” with hollow, eyeless sockets, appeared at the threshold.
“Chen Sheng… it’s all your fault. You brought this thing upon us…”
At the same time, other boys from the dorms began emerging from their rooms—only they weren’t whole anymore.
Each was deformed and grotesque, glaring at Chen Sheng with twisted expressions.
They all said in unison:
“It’s all your fault, Chen Sheng. You did this to us.”
“Ahhh!”
Chen Sheng screamed in terror.
Zhang Jun grabbed him and ran, dragging him down the stairs. Chen Sheng was moving so fast he lost his cane halfway down.
Once they fled the dorm building,
the entire school had changed—everything was unnaturally dark and ominous.
Chen Sheng, utterly panicked, cried out, “What the hell is going on?!”
Zhang Jun, pale-faced, replied, “I don’t know either. The school’s not safe anymore. We have to go!”
He continued to support Chen Sheng, helping him escape the school. But as they ran, Chen Sheng looked back and saw… students laughing, chatting, going about their lives near the dormitory.
Everything looked normal.
What just happened felt like a hallucination.
But before he could look longer, Zhang Jun violently yanked him forward, dragging him out of the campus.
Outside the campus, it was still pitch dark.
Chen Sheng’s foot had started bleeding from the rough dragging earlier.
He had just opened his mouth to ask Zhang Jun what they should do next—
When Zhang Jun’s body suddenly hunched and began trembling violently.
Then his shape started to grow—taller, twisted…
Sharp, familiar claws extended toward Chen Sheng’s face.
That Zhang Jun—or rather, the thing pretending to be him—was now staring at him with a sinister, venomous expression, licking its long, thin tongue.
“Chen Sheng, I finally caught you. Heeheeheeheeheehee… You can’t escape… you can’t escape… you can’t escape…”
