Chapter 31 – Do You Want My Help?
Chen Sheng cried until he had no more tears to shed. Senior Gu lifted his chin and said gently:
“Don’t cry, Shengsheng. Be good. I’m still here. I’ve always been by your side, and I always will be.”
Hearing those words, Chen Sheng felt like that empty, aching part of his heart had been filled. That void had been replaced—by Senior Gu.
Then Gu bent down and scooped him up in his arms, carrying him over to the table.
“Alright, Shengsheng, eat now. It’ll help you recover faster. Otherwise, I’ll be heartbroken.”
The way Senior Gu now affectionately called him “Shengsheng” no longer made Chen Sheng feel awkward or embarrassed. Instead, it warmed his heart.
He picked up his chopsticks and was just about to eat when he paused and motioned for Senior Gu to join him.
Gu pulled a chair over, sat beside him, opened his meal, and picked up his own chopsticks.
“Shengsheng, I’ll eat with you. Be good. Let’s eat together.”
Chen Sheng nodded and finally started eating.
After finishing the meal, Gu carried him back to the bed. Chen Sheng felt exhausted—physically and emotionally.
His injured ankle, his hoarse throat, and the general weakness all left him drained.
Once back in bed, he didn’t want to sleep, but he couldn’t keep his eyes open either. His eyelids were unbearably heavy…
In the end, he was overtaken by the drowsiness and fell asleep.
—
Once Chen Sheng was asleep, Gu Zhen teleported to Zhang Jun’s dorm room. Zhang Jun was lying there, face deathly pale, looking in terrible shape. Gu glanced at him with clear disgust.
He had originally planned to kill him—but Chen Sheng wouldn’t like that. It would hurt him.
So instead, Gu would erase him. After all, that had been Chen Sheng’s choice. That meant Chen Sheng had chosen him over Zhang Jun.
The satisfied smile on Gu’s face grew wider.
His hand suddenly morphed into a razor-sharp claw, which he thrust into Zhang Jun’s head, crushing all the memories related to Chen Sheng that Zhang Jun should never have had.
After retrieving his hand, Gu licked the bl00d off his claws—but his expression twisted in disgust.
“Disgusting.”
The claws quickly morphed back into a normal hand. With a flick of his sleeve, Gu’s figure disappeared from Zhang Jun’s dorm room.
Moments later…
In the silent dorm room, a puff of black mist shot out and dove straight into Zhang Jun’s body.
The very moment it entered, Zhang Jun’s eyes snapped open.
A wisp of black smoke flickered across his pupils, then his gaze quickly cleared. Zhang Jun looked around the room in confusion.
Strange… why was he still in the dorm? It wasn’t a holiday. He rushed to get up, got dressed, and left the room.
—
Chen Sheng had slept deeply and heavily. When he woke up, he felt like his body had grown even heavier.
As his eyes fluttered open, his first instinct was to look across the room. There was Senior Gu, leaning against the bed. “S-Senior…?”
He was overjoyed to find he could speak again—although his throat felt painfully raw, like he had swallowed a handful of gravel.
“Shengsheng, you’re awake?”
Chen Sheng nodded and rasped, “Senior, what time is it?”
Gu smiled. “It’s already 9 PM. Shengsheng, you slept the whole day. Your body is slowly recovering.”
Chen Sheng tried moving his ankle—it didn’t hurt nearly as much anymore.
But his body still felt heavy. He sat up and wanted to get out of bed to use the bathroom.
Just as he was about to get up, Gu was already by his side.
“Shengsheng, you haven’t fully recovered yet. Just tell me what you need.”
“I… I…”
Chen Sheng hesitated, but under Gu’s concerned gaze, he finally said, “Senior, I just want to go to the bathroom. I can do it myself.”
Gu helped him sit up and then reached for a nearby cane.
The moment Chen Sheng saw the cane, his entire body began to tremble uncontrollably—like he had been thrown back into that horrifying nightmare.
Gu’s warm hand suddenly held his tightly.
“Shengsheng? Shengsheng?”
Snapping out of it, Chen Sheng stared at the cane in panic. “No… I don’t want it. I don’t need it—I can walk on my own.”
Face pale and breathing erratic, he shoved the cane aside in a panic. It clattered loudly to the floor.
Suddenly realizing what he’d done, Chen Sheng looked at Gu in horror and quickly apologized. “I—I’m sorry…”
“I understand, Shengsheng. It’s a new cane—I’m sorry. I didn’t think it through. I’ll take it away, alright?”
Hearing Gu’s gentle voice, Chen Sheng clutched Gu’s hand tightly.
“I… it’s not your fault. Can you… come with me to the bathroom?”
He didn’t dare glance at the cane. His eyes were fixed solely on Gu’s face. He knew how… awkward this was.
But Gu simply took his hand in return and said, “Shengsheng, I’ll go with you.”
Gu helped him into the bathroom and stood behind him. Color slowly returned to Chen Sheng’s pale face. A shy blush crept up his cheeks.
He didn’t need to turn around to feel Gu’s gaze on him.
He couldn’t go with Gu watching like that.
After struggling for a while, he finally said in a small voice, “S-Senior, can you turn around… I…”
He heard the sound of shuffling footsteps behind him and finally relaxed, managing to relieve himself.
What he didn’t know was—Gu had only turned his body. His head remained turned toward Chen Sheng, eyes fixed on him the entire time.
Nothing was missed.
Once Chen Sheng finished and zipped up, Gu’s voice came from behind.
“All done, Shengsheng?”
“Yes, Senior. I’ll wash my hands first. No need to help me right now.”
He limped to the sink and caught sight of himself in the mirror—there were some claw marks on his neck, but thankfully, they weren’t deep. As Gu had said, they were healing.
He quickly turned away and washed his hands.
Gu helped him back to bed afterward.
Lying down again, Chen Sheng didn’t feel sleepy at all.
He pulled out his phone. Seeing the chat with Zhang Jun made his heart ache again.
He just stared up at the ceiling, lost in thought…
—
In Zhang Jun’s Dorm
Zhang Jun had already been late to class that day, but luckily wasn’t reprimanded.
After class, when he returned to his dorm, he overheard Wang Gang and the others talking about someone named Chen Sheng.
Chen Sheng?
That name stirred something in him—faintly familiar, but he couldn’t remember why. His head throbbed as he clutched it.
“Zhang Jun, Chen Sheng’s back. Aren’t you going to see him?” Wang Gang asked. “You were really worried about him before, remember?”
Zhang Jun was even more confused.
Worried about Chen Sheng? What was his relationship with Chen Sheng?
Before he could ask, a voice in his head spoke up for him—and the words slipped out of his mouth before he realized:
“Oh, I already saw him today. We talked. He’s fine.”
“That’s good. As long as he’s okay,” Wang Gang replied, turning to chat with Xu Qing.
Zhang Jun’s face turned pale.
That voice… it hadn’t been his own.
What the hell was happening?
He collapsed onto his bed, holding his head in pain.
As night fell and the lights went out, Zhang Jun lay there, trembling. The voice in his head grew louder.
Not just that—familiar yet unfamiliar scenes started flashing before his eyes, like shattered memories being reassembled.
And then came that chilling voice again:
“Zhang Jun, Chen Sheng is your friend. Don’t you want to save him? The one beside him, Gu Zhen, is not human. He’s the same kind of being as I am. Don’t you want to help your friend? I can help you. Do you want my help?”
Zhang Jun clutched his head in agony, trying to shout back.
Who are you? What do you mean ‘not human’? Who is Chen Sheng? Why are you in my head—get out!
But the voice only responded coldly:
“Look carefully. These scenes in your mind—these are your shattered memories. I’m restoring them. They’re yours, Zhang Jun.”
Even though Zhang Jun felt scared and confused, he couldn’t help but focus on those memories. They felt so real, so familiar.
He saw himself with someone—probably Chen Sheng—and remembered everything from their enrollment to everything that had happened before…
The last image showed a tall, handsome young man with a twisted, chilling gaze. His hand suddenly turned into sharp claws, reaching toward Zhang Jun’s unconscious body—right before he had “woken up” in his dorm earlier that day.
Zhang Jun shuddered. That thing… wasn’t human.
Was that Gu Zhen’s true form?
“Yes” the voice confirmed. “He’s the same as me. Now keep watching.”
The vision continued. After extending his claws, Gu Zhen vanished. Then, a mass of dark mist appeared and quickly dove into Zhang Jun’s unconscious body.
Zhang Jun’s whole body went cold. So… this thing inside him…
What do you want?
“You saw the truth. I didn’t lie—I restored your memories. Gu Zhen shattered them.”
“Your friend Chen Sheng is being deceived by him. Don’t you want to save him?”
With those words, all the fragmented images rapidly assembled into a complete memory.
Everything came back to Zhang Jun.
He clenched his fists, trembling.
Even though he was terrified, just thinking about Chen Sheng being near that… monster—he felt overwhelmed with fear and anxiety.
Will you really help me? Why are you helping me? What do I need to do?
He didn’t fully trust this being—after all, it was the same kind of entity as Gu Zhen.
So then… who exactly had replaced the real Gu Zhen? Or had the real Gu Zhen never existed to begin with?
Zhang Jun’s mind was a chaotic mess of questions when the voice responded:
“My goal is simple. I want to kill Gu Zhen and grow stronger. You want to save your friend. I’m not helping you for free—I need to borrow your body to get the job done.”
