Chapter 32 – Knowing the Truth
Borrow your body?
You’re not going to use my body to do anything crazy, are you?
Zhang Jun clearly didn’t trust a word from this inhuman being, but even if he didn’t believe it, he had no choice. He couldn’t drive this thing out of his body no matter what.
As soon as the thought crossed his mind, he heard the voice again in his head:
“I know what you’re thinking, Zhang Jun. Just as you guessed, you have no choice now. You can only listen to me, and do exactly as I say.”
As the cold, eerie voice faded away, it was as if it had completely disappeared from Zhang Jun’s mind.
No matter how much he tried to think or call it out afterward, the voice never responded again…
—
Dormitory.
It was the middle of the night.
Chen Sheng lay awake, staring at the ceiling, then glanced at the opposite bed—Senior Gu had already fallen asleep.
Chen Sheng stared at him for a while.
Suddenly, a faint sound came to his ears. It wasn’t loud, but in the complete stillness of the night, Chen Sheng heard it loud and clear.
His whole body instantly tensed up, growing alert.
Was that… thing back again?
He began to grow paranoid, suspicious of everything. But after the strange sound, silence returned to the room.
Still, Chen Sheng couldn’t sleep anymore. There wasn’t even a hint of drowsiness left.
In the morning, as soon as Senior Gu woke up, Chen Sheng quickly told him about the strange noise last night.
Gu comforted him gently, “Shengsheng, don’t overthink it. That thing won’t be coming back anytime soon. Besides, I’m right here next to you.
If you’re scared, just wake me up next time. It’s okay.”
Chen Sheng’s fear and unease were slowly soothed by Gu’s warm reassurance, like a pair of large hands gently calming his heart.
A night had passed, and now his body felt much better.
But only now did Chen Sheng realize—how did he recover so fast? Was it because of Senior Gu?
He couldn’t help but glance at Gu, who seemed to read his mind.
Gu smiled and said, “Shengsheng, I used my ability. That’s why you’re healing faster. I just didn’t want to see you stuck in bed, pale and weak. That would really hurt me.”
“Thank you… Senior.” Chen Sheng was deeply moved.
His ankle no longer hurt at all. He could even walk without any problem.
After being forced to miss class for so many days, Chen Sheng thought it was time to go back.
He told Gu his intention.
After he spoke, Gu stepped forward and pulled him into his arms. Then he reached into his pocket and pulled out a brand-new black neckband, gently fastening it around Chen Sheng’s neck.
Once it was secured, Gu hooked a finger under Chen Sheng’s chin and leaned in close.
He kissed him—deeply. Chen Sheng wasn’t used to this kind of aggressive kiss. He felt overwhelmed.
Gu’s kiss was nothing like his sunny, gentle appearance. Even though he looked warm and handsome on the outside, his kiss was… While Chen Sheng was lost in thought, he didn’t notice the dark, dissatisfied glint in Gu’s eyes.
Suddenly, he felt a sharp pain on his lips. He gasped, trying to cry out, but Gu took the opportunity to deepen the kiss, leaving Chen Sheng breathless.
When Gu finally let him go, Chen Sheng collapsed against his shoulder, like a fish out of water, gasping desperately for air.
His eyes shimmered, his lips were glossy and slightly swollen from the kiss, and the blush on his cheeks reached all the way to the tips of his ears. There were even tears at the corners of his eyes.
He looked… far too tempting. Gu’s eyes darkened with desire the moment he saw him.
After finally catching his breath, Chen Sheng shyly pulled away from Gu’s arms, face burning red.
Unable to meet Gu’s eyes, he mumbled, “I… I’m going to tidy up and head to class.”
Gu smiled and said, “Go ahead, Shengsheng. And remember to think of me.”
Chen Sheng nodded hastily, still blushing, then quickly gathered his things and left the dorm.
Luckily, the new neckband looked like a regular medical neck brace, so when he got to the classroom, no one paid it much attention.
He didn’t talk much with his classmates either.
Having missed several days of classes, Chen Sheng listened attentively during lectures.
At noon, he went to the cafeteria by himself.
When he saw the empty seat across from him, he couldn’t help but think of Zhang Jun…
Just as he was lost in thought, someone suddenly sat down across from him.
He looked up—and was stunned to see Zhang Jun.
Hadn’t Zhang Jun already forgotten him?
Panicked, Chen Sheng started to rise from his seat, but Zhang Jun spoke up first:
“Hi, I saw no one was sitting here, so I came over. You don’t mind, do you?”
Chen Sheng looked at him—Zhang Jun truly looked like he had no memory of him at all.
His eyes filled with sorrow.
“N-No, I don’t mind. I’m almost done anyway. You go ahead.”
He didn’t want to linger. Staying here would only make him more upset.
His only close friend from the past didn’t even recognize him anymore. And even if he didn’t, Chen Sheng knew he shouldn’t have contact with Zhang Jun.
Otherwise, that thing might target Zhang Jun again.
Just as he stood to leave, Zhang Jun suddenly said:
“I know your name. You’re Chen Sheng, right? It’s weird—I’m sure this is the first time we’ve met, but somehow I knew your name. Did we know each other before?”
Chen Sheng’s heart skipped a beat.
Hadn’t Zhang Jun forgotten everything?
Then how did he still remember his name?
What was going on?
As Chen Sheng struggled to process this, Zhang Jun stood up and stepped closer. “Chen Sheng, why aren’t you saying anything? We’ve met before, haven’t we? Otherwise, how would I know your name?”
As Zhang Jun approached, Chen Sheng instinctively tried to back away—but for some reason, he couldn’t move.
When he looked up into Zhang Jun’s eyes, he was instantly horrified.
A dark, misty haze swirled inside Zhang Jun’s pupils—like black smoke.
Zhang Jun… had been possessed again?
Before he could think any further, everything suddenly went black, and Chen Sheng lost consciousness.
—
When he woke up again, he found himself in a remote, unfamiliar corner.
He quickly got to his feet, wanting to leave.
But in the blink of an eye, Zhang Jun appeared before him.
Chen Sheng was startled—because he could still see that smoky black fog in Zhang Jun’s eyes.
Zhang Jun was clearly being controlled.
“You—what are you trying to do now? Get out of Zhang Jun’s body!”
Chen Sheng’s voice trembled with fear, but he still gathered the courage to shout at the entity possessing Zhang Jun.
Then he heard “Zhang Jun” respond calmly:
“Chen Sheng, I am the same kind of being as the one by your side—Gu Zhen.”
Chen Sheng froze, disbelief written all over his face.
The same kind of being as Gu Zhen?
Wasn’t this the same creature that had been severely wounded by Gu Zhen before? Or was this… another one?
His heart began to panic, and he stepped back in fear. “Stop talking nonsense! I won’t fall for it!”
“Then I’ll show you.”
Before Chen Sheng could react, a mass of black smoke shot straight into his body.
Immediately, fragments of memories began flashing through his mind—starting from his first day at school, the cold dorm bed, the shadow under the bed…
The shadow in the fragments reappeared—then it shifted to Gu Zhen, back and forth.
It became clear from the scenes—Senior Gu Zhen was the shadow. The shadow was Gu Zhen.
Once the vision ended, the black mist exited Chen Sheng’s body.
“Don’t rush to deny it,” the voice said. “Don’t worry—I’m not after you or your friend Zhang Jun. My only target is Gu Zhen. I merely borrowed his body. Compared to me, Gu Zhen is the real killer. Isn’t that Lin Su in the vision—wasn’t she killed by him?” Chen Sheng’s face turned deathly pale, his whole body swaying. His hand reached up and gripped the neckband around his throat.
No… This can’t be…
“These must be fake. You forged them to deceive me. I won’t believe you.”
But before he could say anything else, Zhang Jun suddenly pulled him into a hug.
“Chen Sheng, it really is Gu Zhen. I remember everything now. This thing inside me restored my memory. Gu Zhen did come to my dorm that day—and he shattered my memories. He’s not human. His hand turned into claws… and during that thunderstorm—that was him too. All of it. From the moment you enrolled, he had already set his eyes on you, Chen Sheng.”
Chen Sheng pushed Zhang Jun away and looked at him carefully, confirming that it really was Zhang Jun in control. He looked utterly devastated.
“You… What exactly is that thing inside you?”
Zhang Jun shook his head. “I don’t know. It says its goal is to kill Gu Zhen. It’s only borrowing my body. Not all the time—just when it needs to. Right now, I’m conscious. But when necessary, it takes over.”
And so—
Chen Sheng felt like he was plummeting into an abyss, his body shattering into pieces.
Senior Gu… wasn’t human?
The thing that had been lingering by his side all this time—was actually Senior Gu?
Everything had been orchestrated by him?
Then what about… his feelings?
All those abilities to kill inhuman creatures… the powers that healed his injuries…
Every time that thing disappeared, Senior Gu would conveniently return.
He had said he liked him—even though they had only spent a few days together. Every piece of it had been too coincidental.
Chen Sheng nearly collapsed from the shock, but Zhang Jun caught him in time. Zhang Jun’s eyes changed once again.
“Want to get rid of him? Want to kill him? Then cooperate with me. You have three days. You need to make him swallow this. It’s all up to you, Chen Sheng.”
As “Zhang Jun” spoke, he tossed something black and ominous into Chen Sheng’s hands.
“What… What is this?”
The sensation of the thing in his hands made Chen Sheng nearly throw it away in fright.
“Zhang Jun” said coldly, “Something that can suppress his powers.”
He looked up and examined Chen Sheng’s face.
“If you want to kill him, there can be no room for error. You can’t let him suspect that you already know the truth.”
