Chapter 33 – Why So Passionate?
Chen Sheng didn’t even know how he made it back to class. He felt like a ghost wandering in a nightmare—no, worse than a nightmare.
Senior Gu wasn’t even human.
The terrifying entity that had once haunted him—and the one trying to destroy it now—were one and the same.
All of it… was Senior Gu.
Even though he now knew the truth, Chen Sheng still couldn’t mentally associate the senior with that monster.
He couldn’t believe it—or perhaps refused to believe—that Senior Gu and that creature were the same.
A deep sense of betrayal overwhelmed him, as if he had been kept in the dark from the very beginning, caught in an elaborate lie.
It felt like the entire situation had been a trap woven just for him. He had willingly, step by step, walked into it—like prey stepping into a carefully set snare.
Then… what about his feelings for the senior?
He had fallen for someone who wasn’t even a person, but rather that terrifying thing.
Chen Sheng sat at his desk, his heart aching with the urge to break down and cry. Everything he had believed to be salvation and hope… turned out to be nothing but a well-spun illusion. There was no lifeline, no hope to cling to—just a cruel performance tailored for him.
The thought alone made his stomach churn.
The senior—no, that thing wearing a human disguise—had looked at him with concern, pretended to save him while feeding on his fear, all under the guise of kindness.
Chen Sheng felt sick. He wanted to throw up.
He shrank into his seat and didn’t lift his head until class was completely over and everyone else had left.
Then, he glanced down at the object in his hand—the black item given to him by the other creature. It claimed to suppress Gu Zhen’s power, to kill him.
But could it really be trusted? They were both non-human after all.
Still, he had no other option. He had to confirm it with his own eyes—was the senior truly that thing?
Once he calmed his emotions and masked his expressions, he carefully hid the black object away.
Then he slowly walked back to the dorm.
In the midst of this harsh reality, there was at least one thing that gave him a sliver of comfort—Zhang Jun had recovered his memory. He was okay. His only real friend still remembered him.
When he reached the dormitory door, Chen Sheng took several deep breaths. He was truly scared.
But beyond fear, there was also anger and sadness… all tangled together like a web of emotions.
When he finally pushed the door open, he saw Senior Gu sitting at the desk, typing on a computer. He looked so normal—like a real, living person. How could he be a monster?
If he hadn’t seen it with his own eyes, Chen Sheng still wouldn’t believe it.
As soon as he stepped inside, Gu Zhen stood up and walked toward him with a smile. “Shengsheng, you’re back.”
Chen Sheng flinched slightly—his body trembled involuntarily—but he quickly concealed it and replied: “Mm, I’m back.”
Gu Zhen walked closer with a smile. “Shengsheng, did you miss me?”
If this had happened before, Chen Sheng would’ve blushed, heart racing at the question. But now, his heart was eerily calm—like a still pond, barely rippling.
He lowered his head and softly replied, “I… I did.”
Gu Zhen smiled. “I missed you too, Shengsheng. Missed you very, very much.”
Hearing this, Chen Sheng struggled to keep up the act. He forced a smile, lips tugging awkwardly.
“Senior… I’m really tired. I think I’ll rest first.”
Gu Zhen nodded. “That’s fine. Shengsheng’s body hasn’t fully recovered yet. Do you want to shower? I can help you.”
Chen Sheng shook his head. “I’ll just change clothes. Senior, go ahead and keep working.”
With that, he went to the wardrobe to grab his clothes and headed into the bathroom.
But as soon as Chen Sheng stepped into the bathroom, Gu Zhen’s expression turned cold and dark.
Shengsheng dared to lie to him. He had met with that wretched thing.
He was now tainted… his body carried the scent of something that wasn’t his.
Shengsheng belonged to him. His. Shengsheng.
The dorm suddenly became bone-chillingly cold.
Inside the bathroom, unaware of anything, Chen Sheng changed clothes.
After changing, he stared at his reflection in the mirror, making sure his expression looked normal.
Only then did he step back into the room.
Gu Zhen was still standing there, waiting for him. As soon as he saw him, he stepped forward.
“Shengsheng, don’t go to bed just yet. Today’s contact time has passed—we need to have some physical contact, or else that thing might come back again.”
Hearing that, Chen Sheng’s hands trembled at his sides. “Physical contact”? It was all lies.
He was close to losing control of his emotions, but he forced himself to step forward and hook his arms around Gu Zhen’s neck, placing a quick kiss on his cheek.
“T-That should be enough, right, Senior? You said physical contact was all that’s needed.”
Gu Zhen smiled. “Looks like Shengsheng really is tired.”
Then his smile deepened, his eyes filled with delight. “You even kissed me on your own. I’m so happy. Go ahead and rest, Shengsheng.”
Chen Sheng gave a stiff nod.
When Gu Zhen commented on how tired he looked, Chen Sheng had almost panicked, thinking he’d been caught.
But seeing the senior smile again, he felt a small sigh of relief.
He quickly crawled into bed and immediately shut his eyes.
His mind was filled with fear and… urgency. Three days. He only had three days to get Gu Zhen to take that thing. It was so hard.
He couldn’t even face Gu Zhen without nearly giving himself away. It was exhausting. Chen Sheng’s head spun with worry.
He had no idea that, the moment he closed his eyes—Gu Zhen leaned in close. His face was just inches from Chen Sheng’s.
But Chen Sheng didn’t notice at all. He kept his eyes shut, lost in thought.
—
Soon, midnight arrived.
Chen Sheng didn’t even know when he fell asleep while thinking.
When he opened his eyes, he instinctively looked over at the bed across from him.
He saw Gu Zhen lying there with his eyes closed, appearing to be fast asleep.
Chen Sheng gulped nervously and slowly got out of bed.
Then, he tiptoed to Gu Zhen’s bedside, staring at his face.
He leaned in, inch by inch, and pressed his ear to Gu Zhen’s chest, trying to listen for a heartbeat.
And sure enough, he heard the steady rhythm of a heart beating in his chest.
He reached out and touched Gu Zhen’s hand. It was warm.
Chen Sheng began to doubt everything again.
If Gu Zhen really was that thing, then how could he feel so real? A heartbeat, warm skin—not cold like a corpse.
Unconvinced, Chen Sheng tried to feel for a pulse.
But just as he lifted his head, he found himself locked in a gaze—Gu Zhen’s eyes were open.
Startled, he stumbled back.
But Gu Zhen caught him immediately and pulled him into his arms.
A soft chuckle rumbled from above his head as Chen Sheng was now lying directly on top of Gu Zhen.
“Shengsheng, what are you doing sneaking around and feeling me up in the middle of the night?”
Chen Sheng struggled to get off him, but Gu Zhen only hugged him tighter—he couldn’t move at all.
In the next instant, the positions flipped. Chen Sheng was pinned underneath.
“Shengsheng, why are you so passionate tonight?” Gu Zhen leaned in, eyes gleaming. “Did you want to be held that badly?”
