Chapter 34: Reality or Nightmare
Chen Sheng was pinned beneath him. His face burned red, but his heart was filled with terror. His expression was strange—a mix of fear and embarrassment stirred by Gu Zhen’s words.
But he couldn’t let that fear show—not on his face, not in his voice.
If he did, everything would fall apart before it even began.
It would all be for nothing.
And this wasn’t just for his own sake—it was for Zhang Jun too.
He didn’t trust the thing inside Zhang Jun, but he did trust Zhang Jun himself.
Yet now, after all his observations and attempts to verify the truth, Chen Sheng was full of doubt and conflict once again.
If the senior really was that terrifying thing, then could even a heartbeat be faked?
No matter how well it mimicked a human, no matter how perfectly it wore a human skin, something that wasn’t human should have some flaw.
Then why… when he was with Gu Zhen, he couldn’t find a single one?
Chen Sheng was spiraling deeper into his own confusion. Even after he’d stripped away all the idealized filters he’d once projected onto the senior, he still couldn’t find any cracks.
His mind was in chaos.
Zhang Jun would never lie to him.
He didn’t trust the thing inside Zhang Jun, but… as for the senior, he no longer knew what to think.
Could it be that Gu Zhen really was human? And the thing before was only possessing him, using his body the same way it had impersonated Zhang Jun? Or was it that Zhang Jun had been possessed too, and even his memories had been altered?
The more he thought about it, the more it tangled together—like a tightly wound knot of threads.
He wanted to untangle it, but the harder he tried, the tighter it got. Should he even try to untangle it at all? What if no matter what he did, it would only get worse—only draw the threads tighter and more twisted? His thoughts were like that knot—getting messier the more he tried to make sense of them.
Meanwhile, the senior was still on top of him, speaking in that familiar, teasing tone.
But then—a flicker of clarity struck him. Chen Sheng realized something—he found a loose thread in that messy ball of confusion.
He remembered how Gu Zhen spoke to him before they were close and after they started interacting more intimately. The tone was different.
He thought back, carefully comparing those words to the messages from that other thing—the one that always said, “I’ve been watching you.”
He mentally lined up their words, one by one, comparing and matching them in his mind.
And yes—Gu Zhen’s current tone was exactly the same as that eerie “I’ve been watching you” voice.
It wasn’t as blunt or jarring, but there was a highly similar vibe beneath it.
Just as Chen Sheng was about to piece it all together, Gu Zhen tilted his chin up. “Shengsheng, what are you thinking about? You look so deep in thought.”
Chen Sheng snapped out of it and immediately tried to struggle free, but Gu Zhen only held him tighter in his arms.
“Why aren’t you saying anything, Shengsheng? Did something happen? Instead of worrying alone, wouldn’t it be better to just ask me directly?”
Chen Sheng froze. That line shocked him.
He immediately stopped struggling and replied, “N-No, it’s nothing. I couldn’t sleep, so I just came over to check… I want to go back to bed now.”
Cold sweat slid down his back as soon as he finished speaking.
Gu Zhen let out a disappointed sigh. “Aww, I thought you were feeling lonely—that you wanted me. Coming to my bed in the middle of the night, touching me all over…”
Chen Sheng’s face flushed red from embarrassment. “N-No! That’s not it. I just want to sleep… Senior, can you please let go of me?”
But Gu Zhen didn’t release him. Instead, he laid down beside him and wrapped an arm around Chen Sheng’s waist.
“Then let’s sleep together, Shengsheng. Sleeping together counts as physical contact too, you know.”
Chen Sheng couldn’t argue with that. His body tensed, especially at the warmth of that arm around his waist.
It was warm—like a real person’s.
A normal, human body temperature…
Was the senior human after all?
Had he misunderstood?
But… the tone, the way he spoke—it matched. Didn’t it?
Was he just imagining things?
Chen Sheng’s eyelids grew heavier, sleepiness washing over him like crashing waves.
He was so tired. So sleepy…
His stiff body gradually relaxed under the pull of fatigue, and he slowly drifted off.
And just as he did—Gu Zhen’s face twisted—and vanished.
—
Late at night.
Zhang Jun was abruptly awakened by a voice in his mind.
“Run! Run, Zhang Jun—he’s coming!”
Zhang Jun jolted awake instantly.
Who was coming? Gu Zhen?
Before he could even make sense of it, his body was taken over again—and just like that, he vanished from the dorm.
Zhang Jun could still sense and see everything, even if he wasn’t in control of his body.
Frantic, he questioned the voice in his head.
“Is it Senior Gu Zhen? Did he find out?”
“He’s far stronger than I imagined. Without suppressing his powers, I’m no match for him.
I’ll take us somewhere safe, and then I’ll leave your body—to draw him away.
If I don’t make it back… don’t go near Chen Sheng again.”
Before Zhang Jun could respond, he was brought to a bustling, well-lit street.
Then, he clearly felt the presence inside his body vanish. He called out a few more times—no response.
It was gone.
Zhang Jun stood there in a daze, surrounded by people.
He had hoped that thing inside him could deal with Gu Zhen. But now…Sigh.
—
At the same time.
Back in the dorm, Chen Sheng suddenly opened his eyes.
The space beside him on the bed was empty.
Gu Zhen…?
Wasn’t he just sleeping beside me?
Just as he started to wonder, a voice echoed in his mind.
“Chen Sheng, it’s me.
Didn’t I tell you to keep pretending? Not to slip up?
Forget it. He’s too powerful, and you did your best.”
Chen Sheng froze in terror.
Why was that thing inside him?!
“Calm down. I told you—I mean no harm. I’m not interested in you or anyone else.
He found me and tried to kill me. I had no choice but to hide in your body.
This way, you’ll be able to truly see what he is.
He’s coming back. Quick—lie down and pretend to be asleep!”
Chen Sheng didn’t understand everything, but he immediately did as told.
And the moment he closed his eyes—
He could see.
Even with his eyes shut, he saw it: Gu Zhen’s form reappeared—but now his face and claws were twisted, monstrous.
He was still wearing Gu Zhen’s clothes, but that was the only thing human about him.
Did he… gain spirit vision?
Chen Sheng wanted to ask the voice inside his head, but no answer came.
All he could do was stare as this grotesque, terrifying “senior” walked toward him.
And when he reached his side, that razor-sharp claw touched him.
Chen Sheng couldn’t hold it in anymore—he was trembling with fear.
Then he heard Gu Zhen’s gentle voice say, “Shengsheng, you’re awake?”
Chen Sheng didn’t dare open his eyes.
Gu Zhen continued softly, “Shengsheng, I know you’re awake. You smell strange… Let me check you.”
In that moment, Chen Sheng felt the thing inside him slip away.
And with its departure, the monster’s features faded.
Gu Zhen looked like himself again. Eyes closed, fast asleep. As if everything just now was only a nightmare.
Was it a dream?
Reality and nightmare.
Chen Sheng could no longer tell them apart.
What he didn’t know—Was that the person lying next to him was nothing more than a shell.
Somewhere else on campus, in the pitch-dark night—A cloud of black mist was being held in the palm of a tall, looming figure.
The black mist shrieked in pain.
“I can’t kill you—but your precious little human knows everything now.
I showed him your true face! Hahaha!”
“…Is that so?”
The dark figure replied coldly.
Then—accompanied by a piercing scream—The black mist was utterly annihilated Scattered to dust.
