Chapter 36 – The Missed Turning Back
When Chen Sheng woke up, all he felt was a splitting pain at the back of his head. His memories flickered in and out like static on an old television—sometimes clear, sometimes blurry.
He opened his eyes. His vision was still fuzzy, but he could make out his surroundings. Was this… his dorm room?
As soon as he realized he was back in the dorm, terror instantly flooded his face.
Because the last thing he remembered was witnessing that horrifying scene in the classroom. He had run for his life, fallen down the stairs, and then… nothing.
He also vividly remembered the note Zhang Jun had given him. Every word on it pointed directly at Senior—it was like irrefutable evidence.
Senior wasn’t human. He was that thing—the one that had been haunting him all along. That ghostly presence clinging to him wasn’t a person. All those strange things happening in the classroom, his classmates acting like puppets—it had to be Senior Gu Zhen’s doing.
He had to get out of here. Out of this place…
Panicking, Chen Sheng pushed himself up from the bed, clutching his head, about to bolt—only to see Senior sitting motionless on the opposite bed, staring at him.
“Ah—!”
Chen Sheng could no longer hide the terror in his heart. He let out a piercing scream, fell off the bed, and scrambled up as if he’d just seen a ghost—which, to him, Senior essentially was.
Frightened out of his mind, he tried to flee the dorm.
But the thing in Senior’s skin stood up and walked toward him.
“Shengsheng, where are you going?”
Chen Sheng’s eyes widened in horror, his fear almost tangible.
He screamed in utter panic, “Don’t come near me! You’re that thing! You’ve been lying to me this whole time! Stay away, don’t come any closer—!”
He cried out in emotional collapse, tears streaming uncontrollably down his pale face. He looked fragile and pitiful, as if he might shatter at any second.
When he was done shouting, he turned to run.
But the “Senior” behind him caught him in an embrace. Chen Sheng immediately struggled with all his might. The intense movement only made his dizziness worse, his vision fading in and out.
He thought he heard a piercing, grating sound echoing in his ears.
“Get away from me! Don’t touch me, you disgusting thing!”
He struggled fiercely for a while, but the dizziness left him weak, and he finally collapsed hopelessly into the thing’s arms.
And just then, he heard a sigh from the “Senior” behind him.
“Shengsheng… what are you talking about? How could I possibly be that thing?”
Chen Sheng trembled uncontrollably.
Even now, it still wanted to lie to him.
But the creature continued, “Shengsheng, I’m not that thing. Feel me—I have a heartbeat, I’m warm, just like you. I’m human.”
Chen Sheng had tested it before. He had felt it.
It had to be a disguise.
Chen Sheng only said, “Let go of me…”
Right after speaking, he was spun around to face the “Senior” wearing human skin. That face—handsome and perfectly proportioned, with delicate features.
But Chen Sheng only felt a chilling cold. Beneath that beautiful shell lay a terrifying, sinister presence. Just a shell to deceive.
He was so scared he couldn’t bear to look. Yet, just like in the past, his chin was lifted gently.
“Shengsheng, who told you I wasn’t human?”
Chen Sheng lowered his head and replied, his voice shaking in fear, “No one… I figured it out myself. You are that thing.”
After he spoke, the creature in Senior’s skin said:
“Shengsheng, there’s no need to hide it from me. I know it was Zhang Jun. Or rather, it’s no longer your friend Zhang Jun.”
“Shengsheng, you’re so naive. I originally wanted to get rid of that thing. But I hesitated because Zhang Jun was your friend. So I didn’t act. But I didn’t expect it to come after you to get to me, making up all these lies to trick you.”
“It’s all a lie, Shengsheng. Your friend Zhang Jun was already taken over by that thing the day I erased his memory.”
Chen Sheng was stunned by what he heard.
So the thing inside Zhang Jun… Senior had known all along?
No—something felt wrong. How could Zhang Jun have been possessed?
He recalled the time Zhang Jun approached him in the cafeteria. Those black misty things in his eyes… yes, they were definitely there.
And then later, that thing had spoken to him about Senior. He hadn’t believed it. But Zhang Jun’s eyes had suddenly turned clear in front of him—he had been certain that was the real Zhang Jun.
But now… he wasn’t so sure.
All this time, he had lived in fear and confusion. He had never seen Senior’s true form with his own eyes.
The only time he saw it was when that thing wanted him to see it—it had shown him an illusion of Senior.
And its goal had clearly been to kill Senior. That made sense. It wanted to deceive him, make him believe Senior was the monster, so it could use him to kill Senior.
Chen Sheng was completely lost.
But if that were true… why did it want to kill Senior? Why only go after him?
It claimed it needed to grow stronger—but if Senior were human, how could that strengthen it?
Unless… unless Senior wasn’t human at all.
And if Senior was human and could destroy such things, wouldn’t it be afraid?
And what about that night, when Senior wasn’t there? Was that just part of the illusion too? Why didn’t the creature use him to threaten Senior directly?
Was Zhang Jun really possessed by that thing?
Yes… at the time, it was inside Zhang Jun. And Senior mentioned erasing his memory…
So now—was Zhang Jun still Zhang Jun?
Chen Sheng’s head throbbed harder and harder. He was completely overwhelmed, unable to tell what was true anymore. His thoughts tangled up like a knot.
His head hurt so much. Pale-faced, he clutched his skull. He heard Senior’s voice filled with concern.
“Shengsheng, stop thinking about it. You’ll hurt yourself…”
Senior’s voice sounded pained. “If you’re scared of me, I’ll leave. Just take care of yourself, and be careful around Zhang Jun. Whatever you do, don’t take off the charm I gave you for your neck…”
Chen Sheng was barely listening.
Senior picked him up and laid him gently on the bed. Just as he was about to leave, Chen Sheng quickly said:
“Senior… I… You’re not coming back? I’m just… confused right now. I need to sort things out. Leave for a bit, then come back, okay?”
Senior replied, “Alright. I’ll come back later, Shengsheng.”
As soon as Senior left, Chen Sheng’s expression completely changed.
No matter what, he still believed in Zhang Jun. Back then, that really was Zhang Jun—he was sure of it. Instead of getting lost in confusing thoughts, it was better to trust what his own eyes had seen.
Even if that thing had possessed Zhang Jun, the moment when Zhang Jun’s eyes turned clear—he was still Zhang Jun.
So Senior had known about the thing inside Zhang Jun all along…
No matter what, Chen Sheng reached into his pocket and took out that black misty substance the thing had given him—the one that could suppress Senior’s power.
Whether or not it would work didn’t matter anymore. He had to make Senior take it. Senior really was that thing.
With that thought, Chen Sheng forced himself to calm down.
After a while, Senior returned.
Chen Sheng was so nervous that his hands were trembling. He had already dissolved the strange pill-like substance into a cup of water.
The pill dissolved instantly—no residue.
To be safe, Chen Sheng had even taken a sip himself. No color, no taste, and no effect.
But now, seeing Senior return, his body was trembling uncontrollably.
“Se… Senior…”
He tried his best to keep his voice steady.
“Shengsheng, have you made up your mind? Do you trust me now?”
Chen Sheng concealed his emotions. “Y-yes… I trust you. Senior, do you want some water?”
He was doing everything he could to suppress the panic inside. He didn’t want to stay another second—he needed to escape with Zhang Jun as soon as possible.
He watched nervously as Senior picked up the cup and drank the water. Only then did the tension in his chest ease just a little—but it still felt like a sword hung over his head, ready to fall at any moment.
After Senior drank it, all Chen Sheng could do was wait.
He watched as Senior slowly clutched his head in dizziness—
And he knew it had worked. The pill had taken effect.
Chen Sheng sat at the edge of the bed. When he saw Senior like that, he immediately turned and bolted out of the dorm.
Even as he ran, he could still hear Senior’s voice behind him—
“Shengsheng, where are you going? Come back… don’t go…”
But in his desperation to escape, Chen Sheng never once looked back.
So he never saw what happened next.
The “Senior” who had just drunk the water—suddenly transformed into Zhang Jun.
Zhang Jun—his friend, the one person he wanted to escape with. His only friend.
