Chapter 38 – The So-Called “Truth”
Zhang Jun—how could Zhang Jun be here?
Chen Sheng stared at the “critical patients” and saw Zhang Jun among them. It was undeniably Zhang Jun’s face. Just as he was about to speak, he saw Zhang Jun’s eyes fill with an inky, black mist.
That familiar black mist—wasn’t it the very same entity that had once possessed Zhang Jun? Hadn’t Zhang Jun said that it had already left his body to go kill the senior?
Why was it still in Zhang Jun’s body now? Unless he had lied all along—this thing had never left him in the first place.
Suddenly, Chen Sheng remembered what the senior had told him.
The senior had said that the day he erased Zhang Jun’s memories, this thing had seized the opportunity to take over Zhang Jun’s body. That meant Zhang Jun was no longer Zhang Jun—no longer his friend.
He had been this thing all along.
Then… was everything that happened afterward just as the senior had said? This thing had manipulated him, made him believe that the senior wasn’t human, and used the opportunity to try and kill him.
The more Chen Sheng thought about it, the paler he became—almost transparent. But if the senior really was human, then why had the suppressant pill affected him?
Chen Sheng had also drunk a little of the water dissolved with the pill, and he hadn’t felt any effects at all.
If Zhang Jun was no longer Zhang Jun… then had “he” already killed the senior?
As these thoughts spiraled in his mind, a sharp pain gripped his heart. It had been his own foolishness—he had chosen to believe Zhang Jun. And now Zhang Jun…
While he was still lost in thought, “Zhang Jun” stepped out slowly from among the “critical patients.”
He walked up to the elevator door, the corners of his mouth lifting into a grin as he looked at him.
“Chen Sheng, oh Chen Sheng, you really are an absolute fool. But, I must say, you’re loyal and sentimental. You chose to believe your only friend, Zhang Jun. That made it so incredibly easy for me to make you believe that Gu Zhen wasn’t human.
Hahaha!”
It wore Zhang Jun’s face, occupied Zhang Jun’s body, but its voice was nothing like his—sharper, more piercing, as if it could cut straight through Chen Sheng’s soul.
The thick, inky mist in its eyes swirled like a mass of disgusting worms—sickening and vile.
At last, Chen Sheng fully believed what the senior had said. Zhang Jun had truly been possessed—he was no longer Zhang Jun.
But it was already too late.
After its screeching, sharp laughter, “Zhang Jun” continued, “Chen Sheng, although you fed that suppressant pill to Gu Zhen…”
At this, “Zhang Jun’s” face contorted grotesquely. “I never expected him to be so hard to deal with. Even with his powers suppressed, I’m still no match for him.
But soon, I’ll devour him.”
Chen Sheng’s heart throbbed with piercing pain. In the blink of an eye, all the “critical patients,” including the man beside him, vanished. Yet the hospital corridor remained eerily empty.
Chen Sheng raised his pale face and looked at “Zhang Jun.”
“So the senior was human. You possessed Zhang Jun’s body long ago, tricked me into thinking the senior wasn’t human. Everything I saw—was all what you made me see. But the senior has the power to deal with things like you. Why aren’t you afraid? And why did the pill affect him?”
After he spoke, “Zhang Jun” returned to a normal expression. He looked Chen Sheng up and down, and the grin at the corners of his mouth grew wider.
“Yes, if it hadn’t been for your help, I wouldn’t have had such an easy time fighting him. Gu Zhen is like you—human. But not an ordinary human. He has abilities that can fight spirits and monsters. For us, such a person is both something to fear—and something incredibly desirable. He’s a rare delicacy. Eating him would be far more useful than eating ordinary humans like you. That pill doesn’t affect powerless humans like you—but for someone like Gu Zhen, who holds power, it absolutely works. Now then, Chen Sheng, it’s time for you to come with me to find Gu Zhen. Once he sees you, he’ll obediently let me devour him.”
After he finished speaking, the corners of “Zhang Jun’s” mouth split so wide that even his throat was visible.
With nowhere to run, Chen Sheng was seized by “Zhang Jun.”
The world spun violently—and when the dizziness faded, Chen Sheng found himself back at the academy dormitory.
Now, he understood everything. This thing wanted to use him to threaten the senior. His face went white.
It was all him… all his fault.
The barrier of doubt in his heart had completely shattered. His heart felt like it had been torn into countless pieces. Every emotion—regret, guilt, sorrow—pressed down on him with unbearable weight.
Especially that one line—“If it hadn’t been for your help…”
It was him. Everything was because of him…
“Zhang Jun” dragged him into the dorm.
Inside, the senior sat on the edge of the bed, pale-faced. But when he saw “Zhang Jun” enter, he immediately forced himself upright.
“You still dare to come back? Do you have a death wish?”
“Zhang Jun’s” smile faltered for a moment, then turned sinister again as he yanked Chen Sheng forward and grabbed him tightly by the neck.
Chen Sheng’s eyes rolled back from the choking. His face twisted in pain, turning red as he struggled to breathe.
He wondered—why wasn’t the protective charm on his neck working?
But then he bitterly remembered—It was him. He had stopped trusting the senior, believed he wasn’t human, and avoided any close contact with him. The protective power must have already faded away.
“Let him go, right now!”
At the sound of the senior’s voice, Chen Sheng’s drifting consciousness returned slightly. The grip on his neck loosened just a bit.
Through blurred vision, Chen Sheng saw the pain and worry in the senior’s eyes. And in that moment, Chen Sheng’s shattered heart ached for the senior as well.
The senior said to him, “Sheng Sheng, don’t be afraid. You’ll be okay.”
The words had barely landed when “Zhang Jun” responded with a mocking sneer. “What touching sentiment. I’m practically moved to tears. Want me to let him go? Impossible—unless you let me devour you. What do you say?”
Still choking, Chen Sheng couldn’t speak. He could only look desperately at the senior, shaking his head with all his strength, eyes pleading for him not to agree.
But the senior gave him a comforting look.
Seeing that pale face—At this point, everything that had happened, all of it… was because of him.
And yet the senior was still trying to save him. Still trying to comfort him.
Chen Sheng’s guilt was so overwhelming it felt like his entire soul was breaking apart. He would rather die here and now—this was all his fault, his arrogance, his punishment. He deserved it.
The grip on his neck tightened. “Zhang Jun” was running out of patience.
Chen Sheng heard him sneer, “Looks like your senior doesn’t care that much after all.”
With that, the grip became unbearably strong. Chen Sheng could no longer suppress his cries of pain. Tears and snot flowed uncontrollably down his face. The fingers on his neck pressed so hard it felt like his bones would be crushed.
The terror of death crept into his heart.
But more than death, Chen Sheng was consumed with regret.
He hadn’t had the chance to properly apologize to the senior. He had misunderstood him.
And just as his vision darkened, his consciousness slipping away—He heard the senior’s voice. It sounded far away, yet so clear:
“I agree. Let him go first.”
No—Senior, don’t.
No…
It felt like his heart was being ripped apart.
But all he saw now was darkness. He couldn’t speak. He couldn’t see the senior anymore.
“Come here first.”
It was “Zhang Jun’s” voice.
Then Chen Sheng heard footsteps approaching.
He weakly tried to raise his hand to push the senior away—but he couldn’t even do that.
And then—A sharp, piercing, agonizing scream rang out in his ears. The sound tore through him, shaking every piece of his already shattered heart.
No…
Chen Sheng fell into endless darkness, plunging into a bottomless abyss…
In the dorm—The “senior” collapsed to the floor, pale-faced, unconscious—transforming back into Zhang Jun.
The “Zhang Jun” who had been strangling Chen Sheng—Transformed back into the senior.
He caught the unconscious Chen Sheng and held him tightly in his arms.
