Chapter 39 – Zhang Jun’s Departure
Zhang Jun was the first to wake up, and he remembered everything that had happened.
That day, when he witnessed Chen Sheng fall down the stairs, he had wanted to rush over to help—but then he saw Gu Zhen. In an instant, he realized it was all Gu Zhen’s doing.
Gu Zhen had always been that ghost haunting Chen Sheng—that terrifying entity.
After he passed out, he woke up in the infirmary, determined to find Chen Sheng and tell him everything, to take him away from the school, to escape this place.
But just as he reached the infirmary door, he encountered Gu Zhen.
Terrified, he tried to flee. He clearly saw the murderous intent in Gu Zhen’s eyes, and right before him, those hands suddenly transformed into the same razor-sharp claws he had seen at the bedside in the dorm that night—those horrifying claws from his memory.
Zhang Jun was overwhelmed with fear and fury. He trembled as he faced Gu Zhen but still said angrily:
“I know now—you’re the one who’s been haunting Chen Sheng all along. You’re disgusting and terrifying. Let him go! You’ve been lying to him this entire time!”
His voice shook as he spoke, his back already drenched in cold sweat.
But Gu Zhen, with his claws extended, simply looked at him and said,
“You should be grateful you’re Sheng Sheng’s only friend. Otherwise, you would’ve been dead a long time ago. But right now, I need your help to complete this lie. That way, Sheng Sheng will never find out that I’m actually it.”
Zhang Jun saw the darkness and obsession in Gu Zhen’s eyes as he spoke and felt a bone-deep chill, like he was trapped in an ice cellar.
He didn’t know exactly what Gu Zhen planned to do, but it couldn’t be anything good.
And yet, Zhang Jun couldn’t escape. In the end, he was forced to play along with the script Gu Zhen had carefully crafted for Chen Sheng. The tragic part was that he had become a participant in that very script.
He was trapped in a hollow shell of a body, watching helplessly as the act played out from beginning to end.
No matter how much he shouted inside that shell, it did nothing. He was powerless to change anything. All he could do was watch as Chen Sheng was once again deceived, and it broke his heart.
He was a pitiful participant, a bystander, a witness.
After these thoughts passed through his mind, Zhang Jun suddenly felt a chilling, murderous gaze.
He looked up—and saw Gu Zhen sitting at the bedside, wearing human skin, staring at him with a cold, sinister look.
“Leave. Leave the academy right now, or I’ll kill you where you stand.”
But Zhang Jun no longer felt fear. He glanced at Chen Sheng, who lay pale on the bed, and felt only overwhelming sorrow and pain.
Still, he clenched his fists and bit down hard.
He would come back to save Chen Sheng.
But before that—He had to find someone. Someone who could truly destroy that thing.
Zhang Jun silently vowed:
I’m sorry, Chen Sheng. Hold on just a little longer… I’ll be back for you.
…
When Chen Sheng woke up, he was dazed. His heart felt hollow. He remembered everything that had happened.
His heart had shattered along with the senior’s fate the moment he learned the truth.
Was the senior already dead?
Chen Sheng turned his head—and was met with a familiar, handsome face.
He thought he must be dreaming.
He reached out to touch the face. The senior leaned down voluntarily to let him touch him, and Chen Sheng’s fingers brushed against warm skin.
It felt so real, even for a dream.
Tears streamed down Chen Sheng’s face as he choked out, “Senior… I’m sorry. This was all my fault. I didn’t trust you. I caused all of this.
Why did you save me? You should’ve let me die. I should’ve died. You’ve saved me so many times already, but I still didn’t believe you.
It’s all my fault… it’s all my fault…”
He broke down in sobs. Even though he couldn’t feel his heart beating, he still felt that gut-wrenching pain deep in his chest.
He should’ve died.
He had caused the senior’s death. Why wasn’t it him who died?
“Sheng Sheng.”
In the middle of his agony, he heard the senior’s voice.
He knew it was a dream. Just a dream. And he didn’t want to wake up—ever.
“Sheng Sheng, I’m not dead. Don’t cry, it makes my heart ache.”
Not dead?
How could that be?
Chen Sheng cried even harder.
Until he was pulled into a warm embrace. A hand gently wiped away the tears at the corners of his eyes…
Chen Sheng looked up in disbelief.
How could a dream feel this real?
Unless—this wasn’t a dream.
He reached out in surprise and disbelief, touching the senior everywhere, trying to confirm he was really alive.
And then he heard a heavy breath, and a hand grabbed his wandering one.
The voice above him spoke at the same time:
“I’ve been holding back for your sake, Sheng Sheng. But if you keep touching me like that, I might not be able to resist…”
The last part was whispered low against his ear, the senior’s warm breath brushing his skin. It tickled—and sent a deep blush blooming across his ears.
Chen Sheng’s face turned crimson too. Tears still clung to his cheeks, and with that tear-streaked, blushing face, he looked utterly pitiful—like he’d been bullied to the brink. It was an image that sparked endless thoughts.
“S-Senior… you’re alive?!”
His joy quickly gave way to remorse and guilt. “I’m so sorry. Senior, it was all my fault…”
But before he could finish, the senior interrupted gently:
“Sheng Sheng didn’t do anything wrong. You did exactly what you should’ve. If it weren’t for you, I couldn’t have gotten rid of that thing.”
Chen Sheng stared at him, stunned and confused. “I… Senior, why would you say that? I didn’t trust you—”
He was interrupted again.
“Sheng Sheng, you don’t need to feel guilty. Didn’t I already tell you I knew about that thing long ago?
Of course I knew its intentions. It was my fault—I kept it from you. You didn’t do anything wrong. I just played along with its plan and turned the tables to defeat it. You suffered because of it—and for that, I’m sorry.”
It took a long moment for Chen Sheng to process what the senior had just said.
Played along with its plan?
So the senior didn’t blame him for doubting him?
This had all been the senior’s plan to counter the creature once he saw through its intentions?
Then what about Zhang Jun?
Was Zhang Jun… dead?
Chen Sheng’s eyes searched the room in a panic, but he didn’t see Zhang Jun—not even his b—
But he couldn’t bring himself to ask. Even if the senior had turned the tables, the fact that Chen Sheng had once doubted him was still true. Those thoughts had been real.
Just as Chen Sheng was still immersed in his guilt, the senior spoke again.
“Zhang Jun’s fine. Don’t worry, Sheng Sheng. I know he’s your only friend. I saved him, but I did erase all his memories and sent him away.
You’re not angry with me, are you? He can’t stay here anymore—there’s a being even more dangerous than the one we just defeated. I don’t want anything else to happen to your friend.
If you’re sad, I’ll be sad too.”
After hearing that, and learning that Zhang Jun was safe—and had been saved by the senior—
Chen Sheng had already accepted that Zhang Jun’s memories were gone. That he would forget him. Zhang Jun leaving this place was probably for the best.
After everything that had happened, Chen Sheng agreed—it was time for Zhang Jun to go. If something like this ever happened again…
He didn’t want to think about it. He couldn’t.
He buried himself in the senior’s embrace.
Even though the senior didn’t blame him, Chen Sheng still couldn’t forgive himself. He wanted to make it up to the senior—to love him properly.
As he clung tightly to the senior—Gu Zhen was nearly too excited to maintain his human form.
Sheng Sheng…
Just like this…
Keep trusting me. Keep loving me…
How wonderful.
