Chapter 40 – The Nightmare Begins
Ever since that day when the senior was lost and then returned, Chen Sheng had become even more clingy toward him.
He still attended his classes during the day as usual, and nothing unusual had happened.
The senior had told him that the incident in the classroom last time was caused by that thing, but fortunately, he had arrived in time, and the entity had fled again.
Now, they spent time together intimately every day, and several days had passed without incident.
Just when Chen Sheng thought things would stay that way—
That night—
Chen Sheng lay in bed, still sleeping in his own bed.
After lights out, he browsed his phone for a while as usual before drifting off to sleep.
In the middle of the night, Chen Sheng was startled awake by a nightmare.
Once again, he dreamt of the academy turning into a literal hell—piles of dismembered corpses forming a road, the air thick with the nauseating stench of bl00d and rot, unbearable to the senses.
In the dream, the sky above the academy was gloomy and dim, with not a trace of sunlight. Beyond the academy was pitch-black, an impenetrable darkness that enveloped everything.
Everyone in the academy… except for him… was dead.
In his dream, Chen Sheng kept calling the senior’s name. But among the field of corpses, he couldn’t find him anywhere.
And aside from the small space where he stood, there was no place left to step.
He didn’t see Zhang Jun either—maybe Zhang Jun had already left, which is why he escaped this fate…
What exactly was going on?
Chen Sheng woke up, drenched in cold sweat, sitting up in bed. He could still feel the pungent odor from the dream clinging to his senses.
A nightmare was just a dream. If it had been before, he wouldn’t have thought much of it. But this wasn’t the first time he’d had this kind of dream. It was all too real, as if trying to warn him.
Could it be that the academy really would turn into what he saw in his dreams? Everyone except him dead—could it all be the work of that thing?
As Chen Sheng was lost in thought, he suddenly heard the senior’s voice. Immersed in his thoughts, the unexpected sound made him jump.
When he realized it was the senior’s voice, Chen Sheng turned his head and saw the senior already out of bed.
At some point, the dorm lights had been turned on. Chen Sheng hadn’t even noticed.
The senior walked over and said, “Sheng Sheng, why does your face look so pale? Did you have a nightmare?”
As he approached, Chen Sheng instinctively buried his head in the senior’s chest.
He replied softly, “I had a nightmare, senior. A really scary one.”
The senior gently patted his back. “Sheng Sheng, dreams aren’t real. Don’t be afraid. I’m here.”
Gradually, under the senior’s soothing presence, Chen Sheng stopped feeling so terrified. But a deep unease lingered in his heart.
“Senior… do you think that thing would kill indiscriminately? Would it hurt other people in the academy?”
The senior sat down at the edge of the bed and pulled him into his arms. Chen Sheng didn’t even notice how intimate their position was now—he was just waiting for the senior’s answer.
“Sheng Sheng, that thing isn’t human. The way it thinks is completely different from us. You can’t call it killing the innocent—it’s just its nature. That day is bound to come sooner or later. Especially now, since it can’t lay a finger on you.”
Chen Sheng’s heart sank.
So it really might become like his dream?
That road of corpses, the air thick with bl00d and decay, the terrifying hellish academy, shrouded in darkness—he was the only one left…
Then where had the senior been in his dream? He hadn’t seen him among the corpses.
So the senior must’ve been safe. But even though he called for him many times, the senior never answered.
Where had the senior been at that moment?
The more he thought about it, the more worried he became. Especially with that terrifying thing still lurking in the academy, he feared his nightmare would become reality—that the scenes would overlap.
“Senior, when that day comes, can you save them? They’re innocent… I don’t want…”
The senior leaned in and kissed his forehead. “Don’t worry. I will. Sheng Sheng, if there’s any way to save them, I definitely will. Now, it’s time for you to sleep.”
As the senior spoke those words, Chen Sheng’s head grew heavy, and his eyelids drooped with drowsiness.
…
That night, the moon in the sky was mostly obscured.
At some point, a thick mist had crept up around the academy, a dense white fog that separated the school from the outside world.
As dawn approached, the mist quietly faded—but the view beyond the academy remained invisible.
—
Morning.
Chen Sheng got out of bed.
He washed up as usual, said goodbye to the senior, and headed to class. But the moment he entered the classroom, he sensed something was wrong.
The once lively classroom had fallen silent again. The atmosphere was heavy, and everyone looked unwell.
Worried that something like last time might happen again, Chen Sheng didn’t walk in immediately. Instead, he stood just outside the doorway, ready to flee at any moment.
But his cautious behavior drew attention. Soon, everyone in the class turned their eyes toward him.
“Chen Sheng, why are you standing at the door? Come in already!”
Chen Sheng carefully observed his classmates. They didn’t seem to be having sudden facial distortions like before—just pale and gloomy. So he finally stepped into the room.
Still, he couldn’t help but glance around nervously.
Until the boy seated behind him spoke up: “Chen Sheng, what are you looking around for?”
The boy’s name was Wang Yu.
Chen Sheng looked at him and asked, “Did something happen? Why does everyone look so unwell?”
Wang Yu blinked at him in surprise. “You don’t know?”
Chen Sheng looked puzzled. “Know what?”
Wang Yu sighed. “This morning, a few people tried to leave the academy and found that they couldn’t. It’s like there’s some kind of invisible barrier around the school. On top of that, our phones can’t reach anyone outside either.
We can still contact people inside the school, but no one outside. We’re trapped in here and have no idea what’s going on.”
Chen Sheng’s expression changed instantly.
In his dream, the outside of the academy was also pitch-black, like a bottomless abyss, isolating the academy entirely—as if the entire world only consisted of this school.
His face turned pale. It felt like his nightmare was playing out scene by scene.
He asked with a trembling voice, “Then what about the teachers? The staff managing the school?”
At that question, Wang Yu’s face grew even paler.
“I don’t know. They’ve all vanished—or maybe they left. Either way, there’s no one left but us students.”
Chen Sheng’s pale face twisted in a mixture of confusion and dread. “Then… if no one’s here to teach, shouldn’t we be trying to contact the outside world? Why is everyone still sitting in the classroom?”
Just as he asked, he noticed Wang Yu’s expression change. His face turned even whiter. His lips were moving—“Because I was the one who called them here.”
The moment the sentence ended, Wang Yu’s head rolled off his shoulders, right in front of Chen Sheng, bl00d spraying everywhere—splattering across Chen Sheng’s face and clothes. The classroom, silent until now, erupted into horrified screams.
“Someone’s dead!!”
“What the hell is going on?!”
…
Chen Sheng stared blankly at the severed head on the floor. Wang Yu’s face still wore a smile. Just seconds ago, he’d been chatting with him—and now his head was gone, his body still sitting upright in the seat.
Chen Sheng opened his mouth but couldn’t make a sound.
After a long moment, he wiped his face and looked down at his bl00d-soaked hands.
Finally, he reacted—scrambling backward on the floor in terror.
The rest of the class huddled together, trembling with fear.
Someone looked toward Chen Sheng and asked, “Do you know what’s going on, Chen Sheng? I saw you talking to Wang Yu just now.”
Chen Sheng’s face was as white as paper. His entire body was shaking. “I… I don’t know. I just asked him what was going on and why everyone was in the classroom, and then he just…”
Before he could finish, another classmate said, confused, “Yeah, we were trying to leave the school earlier, right? So how did we all end up back in the classroom?”
A girl whispered with a trembling voice, “Forget that for now… Why did someone just die? This is terrifying. I want to go home…”
She stumbled out of the classroom in panic, and the others followed in a rush, unwilling to stay any longer.
Chen Sheng finally came to his senses and hurriedly got up from the floor, following the others out of the room.
But he couldn’t help looking back one more time—only to see that Wang Yu’s body had vanished, along with the large pool of bl00d. It was as if nothing had ever happened.
