Chapter 41 – The Sleeping Pill
Chen Sheng knew that couldn’t have been a hallucination—someone had really died. Yet when he looked down at his own hands, they were spotless—not a trace of bl00d.
Was this that thing’s doing again?
If all of this really was the work of that thing, then thinking back to Wang Yu’s death… that thing might still be lurking inside the classroom.
With that horrifying thought, Chen Sheng ran all the way back to the dorm in terror.
On the way, he saw both boys and girls gathered around the school fence, faces pale with fear, whispering anxiously.
Just as he had feared, the scenes from his dreams were starting to play out.
Why had he dreamt of this? Did his dreams have some kind of prophetic power? Or was it precisely because he had those dreams that all of this was happening?
Either way, Chen Sheng couldn’t feel at ease.
He rushed into the dorm and saw the senior standing by the window, looking out. When he heard the sound of the door opening, the trace of worry on the senior’s face instantly disappeared—but not fast enough for Chen Sheng to miss it.
Even though the senior was now smiling at him, he had clearly just looked troubled.
“Sheng Sheng, why are you back so early today?”
Chen Sheng didn’t bother to hide anything. He quickly walked up and blurted out in a panic, “Senior! What’s happening in the academy now is exactly what I saw in my dreams. That thing—it’s really starting to kill people, isn’t it? Wang Yu from my class… he died right in front of me. Bl00d… so much bl00d…
Senior, do you have any way to stop this? Didn’t you say that thing was injured? So why has it suddenly gotten so powerful? It doesn’t just want to kill me anymore—it’s going after innocent people in the academy now too!
Is all of this happening because of me? Is it because of my dreams? Did I cause this?”
Chen Sheng spoke in a flurry, completely distraught. He was beyond terrified. It wasn’t just his own life at risk anymore—the entire academy was in danger.
Just now, a vibrant life, his classmate, had died right in front of him. Even if he…
Chen Sheng continued, “Oh, and senior, Wang Yu’s… his body disappeared. What’s going on? And that thing outside the academy—we don’t even know what it is. No one can leave anymore. We’re completely trapped.
We’re just waiting to be slaughtered. Maybe I should just let it kill me. If I’m gone, maybe you and everyone else in the academy will be safe…”
Before he could say more, the senior pulled him into a tight hug.
“Sheng Sheng, you mustn’t say that. If something happened to you… what would I do? I won’t let anything happen to you, Sheng Sheng.”
Held in the senior’s arms, Chen Sheng still couldn’t calm down.
Then the senior said gently, “That thing’s been pushed back by me multiple times. It can’t wait any longer. It needs to grow stronger so it can fight me—this is why it’s doing all of this. But don’t worry, Sheng Sheng, I’ll protect you.”
“But…” Chen Sheng lifted his head from the senior’s chest and said, “What about the others? What are they supposed to do? If that thing keeps attacking people in the academy, growing stronger… what then, senior?”
Chen Sheng knew that no matter how powerful the senior was, he couldn’t protect everyone.
After a pause, the senior let go of him and walked over to the desk, picking up a small bottle.
Chen Sheng recognized it—it was the same bottle of sleeping pills the senior had given him before when he couldn’t sleep.
Why was he taking it out now?
Then he saw the senior pull out a single pill and hand it to him.
“Sheng Sheng, this pill contains my power. I couldn’t tell you before, but while it does help with sleep, it also has protective effects.
You don’t need to go back to class anymore, but just to be safe, you’ll need to take one of these each day.”
Chen Sheng accepted the pill. It was colorless and tasteless. He had taken it once before, so without hesitation, he popped it into his mouth.
As soon as he swallowed, that familiar drowsy feeling returned. His eyelids grew heavy.
In his daze, Chen Sheng suddenly remembered—it was still daytime. Even if the pill contained the senior’s power, it was still a sedative.
He hadn’t expected it to act this fast. Darkness swallowed his vision, and he collapsed.
Right into the arms of Gu Zhen, who had been waiting to catch him.
Gu Zhen’s eyes were dark and deep. In his hand, the bottle—If Chen Sheng had paid closer attention, he would’ve noticed that the bottle was actually empty. That pill just now… had been the only one.
After all, that pill… was extremely difficult to obtain.
…
When Chen Sheng woke up, he still felt a little dazed and physically drained.
But to his relief—he hadn’t had a single nightmare.
When he sat up, he saw the senior still standing at the window.
“Senior, what are you doing?” he asked curiously.
The senior turned around and smiled. “Sheng Sheng, you’re awake. Did you sleep well?”
Thinking about how peaceful his sleep had been—with no nightmares—Chen Sheng couldn’t help but smile. “Senior, that pill really worked. No wonder it had your power in it. I slept great. Not a single bad dream.”
The senior smiled in return. “That’s good. As long as you’re not having nightmares anymore.”
“Oh, right. What are you looking at?”
Chen Sheng walked over to the window. Outside, there wasn’t much to see—just that strange white barrier that had sealed off the outside world, leaving everything beyond it a blank mist.
“I’m thinking of ways to break through the barrier that thing set up.”
Chen Sheng didn’t quite understand what a “barrier” was. It was probably some ability that thing had. He didn’t know where it was now or whether it had attacked anyone else.
The more he thought about it, the more anxious and helpless he felt.
He was safe only because of the senior—but he couldn’t help at all. All he could do was watch helplessly as others…
Sensing his thoughts, the senior reassured him gently, “Sheng Sheng, it’s okay. I’m here. I’ll find a way.”
Chen Sheng nodded. He believed in the senior.
Later, sitting back on the bed, Chen Sheng checked his phone—and sure enough, only messages from people inside the academy were visible. Everything from the outside world had vanished, and any attempts to contact outsiders failed.
Time passed without him noticing.
Eventually, Chen Sheng got up to go to the cafeteria and planned to bring back some food.
He told the senior.
But the senior said, “Sheng Sheng, I’ll go with you.”
As they left the dorm, they saw the hallways and downstairs filled with students. No more classes, but the entire campus was blanketed with fear.
Of course, a few people were happy not to have classes—but most were clearly scared and uneasy.
As Chen Sheng and the senior walked by, they overheard students whispering:
“Doesn’t this feel like one of those survival game novels? Like something out of an infinite loop story? You think there’s a ghost or a monster in our school?”
The moment those words were said, the atmosphere froze.
Everyone’s eyes were filled with fear and despair.
“At this point, I believe it. But if there really is a ghost or something, and we’re trapped here with no way to contact the outside world… then we’re doomed. No one even knows where that thing is.”
Someone added, “Maybe it’s disguised as one of us, hiding in plain sight, just waiting for nightfall…”
…
Chen Sheng didn’t listen any further. His fingers, clenched tightly in his sleeves, had turned white.
“Sheng Sheng, don’t be afraid.”
The senior’s voice sounded gently in his ear. Then he draped an arm around Chen Sheng’s shoulders, pulling him close.
The two of them walked to the cafeteria.
There weren’t many people inside. Most had no appetite.
Chen Sheng decided not to bring the food back to the dorm. Instead, he and the senior found a seat and sat down to eat there.
After finishing their meal and returning to the dorm—The sky was beginning to darken.
Chen Sheng, feeling uneasy, was just about to ask the senior for another sleeping pill—when he heard the senior say,
“Sheng Sheng, just one per day. You can’t take more.”
