Chapter 43 – An Eternal Entanglement
As Chen Sheng buried his head in his arms, he heard a low chuckle from his senior. That magnetic voice tingled down his spine, instantly reminding him of the things his senior had said to him in bed.
“Shengsheng, call me ‘husband,’ just once?”
“Don’t be shy, Shengsheng. We’ve already done all these things… it’s just a word, what’s there to be embarrassed about?”
“Can you feel it, Shengsheng?”
“Do you like it, Shengsheng?”
…
Just remembering those lines now made Chen Sheng feel completely ashamed. The entire academy was still trapped in a life-and-death crisis…
And yet, he and his senior had actually done such things in a time like this.
Flushing with embarrassment, Chen Sheng pulled away from his senior’s embrace and rushed into the bathroom. He still felt like he needed to splash cold water on his face several times to clear his head.
Outside the bathroom, Gu Zhen lifted the hand that had just been wrapped around Chen Sheng’s waist and, obsessed, brought it to his nose to inhale deeply. It smelled just like Shengsheng—sweet, intoxicating.
It wasn’t enough. He extended his tongue and licked it.
Delicious. Just like Shengsheng.
After taking in the lingering scent and licking it again, Gu Zhen stood up and grabbed an empty bottle from the desk. He tossed in the freshly prepared pills.
This pace was clearly too slow. One pill a day—with such a large academy and so many people—if he wanted Shengsheng to be fully transformed, who knew how long it would take?
He had to speed things up.
—
In the bathroom, Chen Sheng splashed cold water on his face several times. His reflection in the mirror still showed a face flushed red, water droplets rolling down his skin.
His exposed body was covered in marks—hickeys and bites stretching all the way down, even to his ankles. The intimacy of it all made him blush even harder.
He lingered in the bathroom for a while, only returning to the room once the thudding of his heart had settled.
When he came out, he saw his senior standing by the window, staring outside.
Chen Sheng approached to look as well. After daylight broke, the fog outside the academy had thinned to near transparency. It was no longer bl00d red, as if everything that happened the night before had never occurred.
But Chen Sheng remembered the nightmare vividly, and how it had coincided with reality. A sense of sorrow, urgency, and dread flooded him.
Panicked, he turned to his senior and poured out everything about the dream and what had happened.
“Senior, do you think everything is happening because of my dreams? Or maybe my dreams predict what’s going to happen? Does that mean the end of the academy is inevitable—that everyone here will die, and it can’t be changed?”
After listening, Gu Zhen picked up the pill bottle on the table, took out a pill, and said:
“Shengsheng, it’s time to take your medicine. I added a sedative effect this time. Don’t worry, none of this has anything to do with your dreams… and besides…”
His gaze fell on the red marks peeking out from Chen Sheng’s collar. “The solution has already been given to you. As long as you stop having nightmares, everything will be fine.”
Chen Sheng, flustered by the way his senior was looking at him, quickly tugged at his collar to hide the marks—though it was useless.
He accepted the pill but hesitated. He didn’t want to fall into a deep sleep like last time. Since the pill helped him avoid nightmares, wouldn’t it be better to take it at night?
“Senior, can I save this pill until tonight?”
Gu Zhen’s expression turned serious.
“Shengsheng, after I infused it with my power, this pill has a set time for consumption. It’s no longer an ordinary sleeping aid. You have to take it now.”
“…Okay.”
Left with no choice, Chen Sheng popped the pill into his mouth and swallowed it with the water his senior handed him.
The effects kicked in quickly. He collapsed again.
Gu Zhen carried him back to the bed and sat beside him, watching intently.
He’s adapting well… There’s no need to wait any longer…
—
At the academy, during daylight, no one stayed in their dorms. Everyone was still trying to figure out a way to escape.
No one wanted to die. Just then, Gu Zhen appeared before the group.
“Senior Gu Zhen, why are you here?”
Gu Zhen stepped forward slowly, smiling warmly—his handsome, gentle appearance still the same illusion everyone was used to.
“Do you all want to leave the academy?”
The crowd erupted.
“Senior Gu Zhen, do you have a way out?”
“Tell us, please!”
“Please save us, Senior Gu Zhen…”
Gu Zhen smiled. “Don’t worry. As your senior, of course I’ll help. I’ll get you all out.”
—
Chen Sheng slept deeply. When he woke, his senior was nowhere to be seen.
He felt groggy but walked over to the window. When he opened the curtains, his eyes widened with disbelief and joy.
The fog outside the academy had completely vanished. Had his senior truly broken the barrier?
Gu Zhen was amazing.
But oddly, it was eerily quiet outside. There were no signs of people. Had everyone already escaped while he was asleep?
Where was his senior?
Chen Sheng checked the school group chat and saw messages celebrating their escape, all thanking Gu Zhen for his method.
He was overjoyed—his senior had really done it.
But… where was Gu Zhen?
Anxious, Chen Sheng left the dorm. The entire academy was empty, every door wide open. Everyone had already gone.
He searched everywhere, but there was no sign of Gu Zhen.
Frightened, he ran outside the academy—but after running for a while, he somehow ended up back inside.
What? The fog was gone! Why couldn’t he get out?
He tried again, but each time ended up back at the academy. Suddenly, the bright day turned into night—as if in an instant.
The academy at night was chilling.
Walking through the halls, icy wind constantly whipped past him. When he returned to the dorm building, it was no longer empty—it was filled again with students.
They’d escaped—why were they still here?
He opened the group chat. All the messages had turned bl00d red.
Every message said the same word: “Death.”
The screen filled with the word “Death.” Horrified, Chen Sheng dropped his phone.
Then, students began pouring out of the dorms—faces twisted, eyes sinister, all staring at him.
He backed away, terrified.
A cold, familiar voice whispered in his ear.
“Chen Sheng… Do you like the gift I gave you? I killed everyone in the academy. And now, it’s your turn.”
“AHHH!”
Chen Sheng sat up screaming, drenched in fear. A figure sat at the bedside—he recoiled in terror—until he realized it was Gu Zhen.
His face was pale, lips white, and bl00d stained the corner of his mouth.
“Senior… What happened?!”
Gu Zhen rasped, “I’m fine. Shengsheng… Everyone in the academy has been possessed by that thing. Even I’m no longer a match for it.”
Chen Sheng froze. His dream wasn’t just a dream?
But the students weren’t dead—they were possessed. Still horrible.
“Senior…”
Gu Zhen pulled out the bottle again and handed it to him.
Chen Sheng saw that it was half full.
“What is this?”
“These pills will protect you. I’m injured, but if you take them, the possessed ones won’t be able to harm you. I’ll go lure it away. Shengsheng, after you take them, run—leave the academy.”
“Senior—!”
Before he could stop him, Gu Zhen rushed out.
Panicked, Chen Sheng swallowed the pills. An odd sensation surged through his body—but he had no time to think. He bolted out.
The academy was empty once more.
Still nighttime. Just like in the dream.
He couldn’t find Gu Zhen.
Then, his classmates—twisted and horrifying—began appearing, just like in the nightmare.
But instead of panicking, a strange feeling overtook him.
His pupils turned pitch-black, though he didn’t notice.
A violent urge to kill rose within him. Something inside him was rampaging.
The students looked… delicious.
He wanted to eat them. So badly.
To the others, Chen Sheng was horrifying.
Didn’t Gu Zhen say he’d help them escape? Why was Chen Sheng like this?
Could Chen Sheng be the real monster?
A demon wearing human skin?
They screamed and backed away.
But Chen Sheng, now devoid of self-awareness, licked his lips.
So tasty… I want to eat…
AHHHHH—
Shrill screams filled the air.
—
When Chen Sheng finally regained consciousness, he saw bl00d on his hands, broken bodies all around, and a few survivors staring at him in horror.
“You… you monster! You demon! It was you!”
The images came flooding back. His mouth tasted of bl00d. Touching his lips, he felt it—the bl00d was real.
How… how could this be?
Had he been possessed?
Wasn’t his senior supposed to lure it away? Where was Gu Zhen?
The taste, the memories—he gagged.
Then he heard someone shouting downstairs:
“The fog’s gone! We can leave the academy! It was Senior Gu Zhen’s method—he saved us!”
The survivors ran. Chen Sheng followed.
But his bl00d-covered appearance, combined with the story the others had told, caused panic.
“He’s a monster!”
“We need to find someone to kill that thing!”
Standing there, Chen Sheng felt all the stares pierce through him. He was human… wasn’t he?
But he’d killed them…
Why?
Then it hit him—the pills.
Could it be the pills?
As he trembled with realization, footsteps approached.
Gu Zhen.
Chen Sheng stumbled back in fear.
Was he now the same as that thing? Would Gu Zhen try to kill him?
Gu Zhen stood there, pale and wounded.
“Shengsheng, you…”
Chen Sheng choked, “Senior… those pills…”
Gu Zhen’s eyes reddened with guilt. “It was me. All my fault… I didn’t realize the pills had been tampered with. I’m sorry, Shengsheng… I thought I was distracting it, but it was all a trap. I was wrong… I’m sorry…”
Chen Sheng couldn’t hear anything else. “Then what am I now? Am I no longer human? Have I become like it?”
Gu Zhen’s silence and slow, pained nod answered everything.
Tears streamed down Chen Sheng’s face, mixing with the bl00d to become bloody tears dripping to the ground.
He couldn’t take it. He ran—faster than any human should be able to.
Left alone…
Gu Zhen stood in place and suddenly began to laugh maniacally.
His mouth twisted into a terrifying grin, his eyes turning pitch-black—just like Chen Sheng’s.
Shengsheng was finally the same as him.
He could never leave again.
They would be eternally, irreversibly entangled.
