Chapter 49 – Rainy Night Plan
After a long, long time, the sky brightened and the sun rose high.
Even though Chen Sheng was no longer human, he still couldn’t handle being tormented like this. Struggling to sit up, he pleaded,
“Senior… please… that’s enough…”
Though he had already said those words countless times before without any effect, this time, he truly couldn’t take it anymore.
Thankfully, upon hearing his plea this time, his senior didn’t continue. He finally showed mercy and let poor Chen Sheng off the hook.
Seriously, who’s the inhuman one here…
While Chen Sheng was still caught up in his thoughts, on the other side, Zhang Jun was also lost in his own—after being used as a human pillow all night, he was completely defeated.
Time was running out. If not for the need to save Chen Sheng, he never would’ve pretended to be gay. Besides, Shen Yu didn’t even seem gay at all.
At first, Zhang Jun thought Shen Yu flirted with everyone—men, women, anyone. But now he realized all the ones Shen Yu “flirted” with were either male or female ghosts—each one terrifying in appearance—and he killed them without hesitation.
And wasn’t that thing haunting Chen Sheng also a ghost? So why was Shen Yu unmoved when he first heard about it? Why did he ask why he should even help?
Zhang Jun couldn’t figure it out. As he got up and stretched his sore limbs, he saw Shen Yu getting up too.
But then Shen Yu said something that instantly filled Zhang Jun with excitement.
Shen Yu looked at him and said, “Since you’re so desperate to save your friend, I guess it’s not impossible. I’ve got a lot to handle myself, and I’m tired. I need a break to rest and recharge. Here’s what you’ll do—I’ll give you a few addresses. You go to those places and lure the ghosts disguised as humans back here. Once I’ve dealt with them, I’ll go with you to save your friend.” Zhang Jun hadn’t expected that just one night would yield such a surprising outcome. He thought he’d have to keep pretending to be gay, but clearly Shen Yu already saw through his act.
After all, his acting was nonexistent.
But now that he was being asked to seduce terrifying ghosts pretending to be humans, Zhang Jun’s legs trembled. What if one of them eats me halfway through the plan?!
As he was panicking, he saw Shen Yu smirking at him.
“What, don’t want to do this, don’t want to do that, and still expect me to help you for free? What kind of dream world are you living in?”
“N-no, no, I’ll do it! Whatever you say!”
Looking at Shen Yu, Zhang Jun sighed inwardly. A guy this powerful wasn’t easy to convince. Nothing came free—not even in a supernatural world.
After hearing Shen Yu’s instructions, Zhang Jun trudged out the door looking utterly defeated.
Once Zhang Jun was gone, Shen Yu’s expression instantly darkened. He had been keeping count.
He had known long before this Zhang Jun kid showed up.
Gu Zhen… after all this time, he’d reappeared.
Shen Yu and Gu Zhen had crossed paths once before—and Gu Zhen had proven to be the most difficult opponent. That time, Gu Zhen hadn’t stayed long or tangled with him too much before vanishing.
But Shen Yu had been injured in the process, and since then, Gu Zhen had completely disappeared. He hadn’t expected him to come back now, and worse—he had harmed so many people, including that boy who’d been bewitched—Chen Sheng.
Thinking of that, Shen Yu sighed. There’s no saving him now. He’s already been fully assimilated.
When the time came, he would have to be eliminated along with the others. Shen Yu had been cultivating his strength for years, and it would finally be enough.
—
For the next two weeks,
Zhang Jun narrowly escaped death several times as he lured those human-disguised ghosts into the house. More than once, his clumsy acting had nearly been exposed.
Thankfully, Shen Yu always arrived just in time to save him.
Watching Shen Yu dispatch those ghosts with ease, Zhang Jun finally felt the time was right.
Then he heard Shen Yu say,
“Let’s move.”
Zhang Jun was so moved he nearly cried. His hard work had paid off—finally, finally!
He hadn’t contacted Chen Sheng since leaving the academy, and Chen Sheng hadn’t reached out to him either. Zhang Jun didn’t need to guess—Chen Sheng had clearly been brainwashed by Gu Zhen.
And Zhang Jun didn’t dare text him, afraid he’d alert the enemy. After all, that thing—whether in disguise or in its true form—was always glued to Chen Sheng.
He didn’t even know if Chen Sheng was still at the academy.
As he was lost in thought, Shen Yu said, “Come with me. I know where they are.”
Zhang Jun lit up with joy and hurried after him.
—
Lately, Chen Sheng had been feeling… strange. He couldn’t quite put it into words. It was like a gut feeling—something bad was coming.
Could it be that thing again?
But it hadn’t shown up that often lately. Then again, it always came and went mysteriously.
Or maybe… it’s already moved on to harming someone else?
Sigh…
If it was hurting others, there wasn’t much he could do. All he could do now was stay by his senior’s side. That was all that mattered to him.
Ever since his senior stopped going to the academy, they’d been living together—just like cohabiting partners. Only… his non-human status made things feel kind of off.
In dramas, it was always “humans and ghosts walk different paths,” or “humans and demons can’t be together.” Their lifespans were different too. He was no longer human—and unless something powerful destroyed him, he could go on like this indefinitely.
But his senior… was different.
Ironically, after becoming a ghost, Chen Sheng found himself thinking more than ever before. He had nothing to do—not even classes.
Days passed quickly.
That night, thunder cracked across the sky, a bolt of lightning splitting through the darkness. It hadn’t rained in a long time. Now it came pouring down in sheets, slamming against the windows like someone venting deep resentment.
The last time it rained like this… it had been a nightmare.
Now that he wasn’t human anymore, Chen Sheng stared out the window, completely absorbed in the downpour.
Suddenly, there was a knock at the door.
His senior was still sleeping. Chen Sheng instantly appeared at the doorway, wanting to see who was outside.
He extended his senses—and was stunned to find it was Zhang Jun, who he hadn’t seen in ages. Next to him stood a tall, unfamiliar, strikingly handsome man.
As soon as Chen Sheng sensed the man’s presence, a wave of fear washed over him. He immediately withdrew his senses.
Why is Zhang Jun here all of a sudden? Was he forced by this dangerous man? But he doesn’t look forced…
And how did Zhang Jun even know his senior’s home address?
Just as Chen Sheng was still piecing it together, he heard Zhang Jun call out from outside— “Chen Sheng! Open the door! We’re here to help you!”
Chen Sheng blinked, confused and unsure. As he hesitated, footsteps sounded behind him.
It was his senior—awake now.
His senior looked at the door and asked curiously, “Sheng Sheng, is that your friend?”
Chen Sheng nodded. He recognized Zhang Jun—but the man next to him, who gave off a dangerous aura, was a complete stranger.
Outside, Zhang Jun’s face turned pale the moment he heard Gu Zhen’s voice. Worse—he saw a wisp of black mist seeping through the doorframe.
Then, Shen Yu casually stepped forward and crushed the black mist with his foot, dispersing it instantly.
He then gave Zhang Jun a subtle look.
They had already planned everything before arriving—being discovered was inevitable. But when it happened, Shen Yu would lure Gu Zhen away. Zhang Jun’s job was simple: get Chen Sheng out, and explain everything.
And if even after learning the truth Chen Sheng still didn’t believe them… then he’d show him.
Once Chen Sheng saw it with his own eyes—he’d have no choice but to believe.
