Chapter 51 – Losing Control
Zhang Jun stared blankly as Chen Sheng vanished in an instant, still in a daze. His old friend… is no longer human now. Shaking off the daze, Zhang Jun quickly rushed back upstairs.
As soon as Chen Sheng reached the upper floor, he saw the unfamiliar man fighting with his senior.
The man sneered at the senior,
“Gu Zhen, if it weren’t for the fact that I couldn’t overpower you before, I would’ve dealt with you long ago. And now you’ve destroyed an innocent life. Do you think that just because you wear human skin and disguise yourself as a person, that makes you human?”
Upon hearing this, black mist surged violently around Chen Sheng. He looked at his senior and asked,
“So what he said is true? Zhang Jun already told me everything. You’re the ghost—the thing that’s been haunting me all along. Everything was orchestrated by you, from beginning to end. You’re the one who gave me those pills… that turned me into what I am now, right? The people who died in the academy—was that your doing too?”
His senior sighed and looked at him gently,
“Shengsheng… you don’t trust me anymore?”
Looking into his senior’s eyes, Chen Sheng hesitated. He didn’t know who to believe anymore. He didn’t even trust himself. Who could he believe? What should he do?
Just as Chen Sheng was consumed by pain and confusion, a force suddenly grabbed him by the neck and lifted him into the air. The unfamiliar man held him up and said to the senior,
“This is the one you corrupted, isn’t it? What a pity…He’s beyond saving. I might as well send him off now.”
As soon as he finished speaking, Chen Sheng felt intense pain engulf his entire body—it was as if he were about to be crushed by this overwhelming power.
But this time, he didn’t cry out for help. He just looked at his senior, hoping to hear the truth from him at last.
Instead of an answer, his senior’s face began to blur—and a powerful, familiar aura, the same dark energy that surrounded Chen Sheng himself, emerged and wrapped around Gu Zhen.
Seeing this scene, Chen Sheng understood. That… was confirmation in itself. There was nothing more to ask.
So it was all true. Everything Zhang Jun had said—was true.
The pain was unbearable. In that moment, Chen Sheng completely lost control. He broke free from the man’s grip, and with that came a surge of rage—every suppressed emotion from when he was still human burst out.
He charged forward, driven by fury and instinct, trying to destroy the thing that had deceived him.
But before he could even get close, he was thrown back violently by the crushing aura.
And then, before his eyes, the thing vanished into thin air.
A violent storm of energy swept through the room, leaving it in complete ruin. The unfamiliar man had also disappeared without a trace.
When Zhang Jun finally arrived, this was the scene he saw.
He rushed forward, seeing Chen Sheng’s body fading into a translucent state.
“Chen Sheng, Chen Sheng, you—”
Before he could finish, Chen Sheng lifted his head.
But his eyes were now pitch black—like endless tunnels. Black mist surged around him, wild and uncontrolled.
Chen Sheng sniffed the air as if guided by instinct—then suddenly lunged greedily at Zhang Jun.
Startled by Chen Sheng’s feral state, Zhang Jun screamed in panic, trying to snap him out of it.
But Chen Sheng held him down tightly, baring his teeth and aiming to bite him.
Zhang Jun had no choice but to resist. If it had been the old Chen Sheng, he might’ve stood a chance—but against the current, non-human Chen Sheng, he was powerless.
As Chen Sheng neared, ready to devour him, Zhang Jun cried out in fear and desperation, tears streaming down his face,
“Chen Sheng, wake up! It’s me! I’m Zhang Jun! Please wake up!”
“…Zhang Jun.”
Chen Sheng echoed in a chilling, hollow tone.
Suddenly, clarity flickered in his dark eyes. He stared at Zhang Jun, who was beneath him, terrified and crying—and just like that, he snapped out of it.
In a flash, he fled in shame and horror.
It happened so fast—like a gust of wind, Chen Sheng disappeared from the ruined room.
Zhang Jun sat there, drenched in cold sweat, as if he had just escaped death. The back of his shirt was soaked. He wiped the tears from his face and slowly got up from the floor.
Looking around at the destroyed room, he shouted again, desperate and worried,
“Chen Sheng!”
He called several times, but Chen Sheng never appeared.
Instead, Shen Yu returned, equally battered, with injuries visible all over his body.
Upon seeing him, Shen Yu said directly,
“You can come with me, or stay here. It’s your choice.”
Seeing how disheveled Shen Yu was, Zhang Jun grew even more anxious and quickly asked,
“What about Gu Zhen? Did you finish him off? Chen Sheng lost control just now and tried to kill me—but I managed to wake him up. He couldn’t accept what he’s become and ran off…I don’t know where he is now.”
Shen Yu frowned and said, “Gu Zhen got away. And as for that Chen Sheng—don’t bother. If you’re not leaving with me, then I suggest you don’t go looking for him either. He’s not human anymore. You’ve seen plenty of ghosts lately—bloodthirsty creatures. Even if he’s your friend, or even family, he won’t be able to resist that kind of urge.”
With that, Shen Yu turned and walked away.
He hadn’t managed to capture Gu Zhen. The guy had vanished too quickly.
But Shen Yu could tell—Gu Zhen hadn’t been trying to fight him. He was only desperate to escape. Otherwise, with the strength Gu Zhen now possessed, not even Shen Yu would be his match.
He hadn’t expected Gu Zhen to grow so powerful so quickly.
If it had been the old him, he’d be dead by now.
As for that Chen Sheng… tsk tsk, Shen Yu shook his head. He’d deal with that later—after he had fully recovered.
Zhang Jun watched as Shen Yu walked away. Though he was frustrated, he couldn’t blame him—after all, Shen Yu had tried to help. And if even Shen Yu couldn’t handle Gu Zhen…
As for Chen Sheng…
Zhang Jun was both worried and deeply shaken. Recalling what just happened still made his heart race with fear.
He didn’t want to stay in that place any longer. This was Gu Zhen’s territory—his den.
If he waited alone, Chen Sheng might never come back—and instead, Gu Zhen could return. Neither outcome was ideal.
From what he had just witnessed, Chen Sheng had completely lost control. He couldn’t restrain himself anymore.
Zhang Jun thought about it—and decided his life was more important. He was just an ordinary person, after all, with no abilities.
So, without hesitation, he hurried to catch up with Shen Yu.
…
Chen Sheng didn’t know where he was anymore. Sometimes his vision was drenched in bl00d red, other times in pitch black.
His mind was blurry. He had no sense of direction.
Senior was a liar. He had turned Chen Sheng into this… thing. He had toyed with his emotions, killed countless people, and made him trust him over and over.
And the things they’d done together… now made him want to retch.
If he were still human, he could’ve vomited. But even that ability had been stripped from him.
His body was howling again—urging him to eat, to feed.
Chen Sheng tried desperately to suppress it, but his instincts overpowered him. In a blur of speed, he began seeking out food.
But every time he found something—no, someone—he would be struck by the realization: That’s a person. Not food.
So each time, he would run away again, in shame and horror.
Eventually, utterly exhausted, he collapsed in a quiet, dark alley.
His form had grown fainter—almost transparent.
Rain was still falling. Curled up in the corner, Chen Sheng’s eyes were void of all life.
Maybe… maybe it would’ve been better if that stranger had destroyed me back then.
Then I wouldn’t have to endure all this pain.
