Chapter 6 – The Number Is Invalid
Chen Sheng felt that this was the best and most peaceful sleep he had had since arriving at the academy. Sleeping straight through until morning felt like a luxury.
And after a good night’s rest, he felt refreshed—his mood naturally improved too.
But as soon as he woke up and opened his eyes, something felt wrong.
He could feel a warm body pressed right up against his side.
Startled, Chen Sheng turned his head—only to find Zhang Jun’s face mere inches away.
Chen Sheng: “……”
Wasn’t Zhang Jun sleeping on the opposite bed last night? How did he end up in the same bed as him?
Confused, Chen Sheng tried to move, only to realize his entire body ached—he felt sore all over and incredibly uncomfortable.
The moment he stirred, Zhang Jun, who had been sleeping beside him, woke up.
Still groggy, Zhang Jun blinked at Chen Sheng in confusion and asked, “Why am I sleeping in your bed?”
Chen Sheng was already puzzled, and now even more so with Zhang Jun asking the same question. He honestly wanted to know how Zhang Jun had ended up in his bed during the night.
Wincing from the soreness, Chen Sheng sat up.
“I don’t know either. When I woke up, you were already here.”
Zhang Jun scratched his head and said, “Oh right, I didn’t feel that cold thing from your bed last night. Did you feel it?”
Chen Sheng shook his head. After such a good night’s sleep, his mood had greatly improved.
“Nope. I slept through the whole night. The bed wasn’t cold like before.”
“That’s good. Still strange, though. What’s going on with this bed of yours? Anyway, as long as it’s back to normal.”
As Zhang Jun spoke, he got up and noticed the neatly made bed opposite. He turned to Chen Sheng and asked, “Did you make that up for me last night?”
Chen Sheng nodded. But the way Zhang Jun was acting… it seemed like he didn’t remember at all.
Last night, Zhang Jun had stared at him the whole time while he was making the bed. And now he was acting as if he had no memory of it.
Zhang Jun genuinely didn’t recall it. He only remembered coming back to the dorm with Chen Sheng—everything after that was blank.
But he didn’t dwell on it. Glancing at the time, he told Chen Sheng, “Go wash up. Since your bed’s fine now, I’ll head back to my own dorm tonight.”
“Okay. Thank you, Zhang Jun.”
“No need to thank me—we’re friends.”
As he spoke, Zhang Jun suddenly noticed he wasn’t wearing his own clothes.
But then he remembered—he hadn’t gone back to his dorm yesterday to grab any, so these must be Chen Sheng’s.
Still, it was strange… he had absolutely no memory of borrowing them.
Scratching his head in confusion, Zhang Jun walked into the bathroom.
Chen Sheng, watching him, began to suspect Zhang Jun genuinely didn’t remember anything that happened last night.
Which made him wonder—did Zhang Jun also forget that they had planned to talk to the dorm manager today and check the surveillance footage?
Thinking of this, Chen Sheng got up and walked to the bathroom.
Standing at the door, watching Zhang Jun wash up, he said,
“By the way, we still need to talk to the dorm manager today and check if someone came into my dorm. We should review the security footage.”
Zhang Jun paused, slightly stunned by the reminder.
Then, as if recalling the situation, he nodded and agreed,
“Right, yeah—we definitely need to talk to the dorm manager and check the surveillance. We have to find that creepy freak—seriously messed up.”
He went back to washing his face.
Now it was Chen Sheng who was frozen.
Zhang Jun had just been acting like he didn’t remember anything from last night—he even looked different than he had the night before. But now he was suddenly saying things as if he did remember?
Maybe Zhang Jun was just traumatized and forgot parts of it?
Still… the whole thing felt off—really off.
By then, Zhang Jun had finished washing up and stepped aside. Seeing Chen Sheng still standing at the door in a daze, he said,
“Don’t zone out—go wash up. After classes, we’ll go see the dorm manager together.”
“Alright.”
Snapped back to reality by Zhang Jun, Chen Sheng didn’t think any further and went in to wash up.
Once he was done, the two of them left the dorm together.
Before they left, Zhang Jun made sure the door was properly locked. Under his watchful gaze, they double-checked the lock, then headed to their respective classes.
They weren’t in the same major, so their classrooms were in different buildings.
After parting ways with Zhang Jun, Chen Sheng returned to his own class.
Sitting at his desk, he couldn’t help but scan the room out of habit.
The last incident had left him deeply shaken—he couldn’t stop himself from checking if anything looked suspicious.
After looking around and finding nothing unusual, Chen Sheng relaxed a little and got ready for class.
Suddenly, his phone buzzed with a message.
Normally, he would’ve dismissed it as just another spam text.
But since his screen lit up, he caught a glimpse of it.
It was a text message—but the sender’s name made his bl00d run cold: I’ve Been Watching You.
The moment he saw that disturbing name again, Chen Sheng looked around the classroom in fear, but he didn’t see anything strange.
With trembling hands, he opened the message.
This time, what appeared was a photo.
And the content of the photo—
Chen Sheng’s eyes widened in horror.
It was a picture of him, fast asleep. The angle was so close, it felt like whoever took it had been right beside him, leaning in with a phone while he slept.
Right after the photo came another message:
[Chen Sheng, you look so cute when you’re sleeping. I really want to sleep with you like that forever. Did you sleep well last night?]
“Ah!”
Chen Sheng shot up from his seat with a startled scream.
His phone fell to the ground as cold sweat broke out across his back.
It was broad daylight, yet he felt a cold, sinister chill all around him—just like that haunting chill from his bed at night.
His sudden outburst startled the whole class.
Someone grumbled, “What the hell? It’s early in the morning and you’re screaming like a banshee. Scared the crap out of me.”
“I’m sorry, I’m really sorry…”
Chen Sheng quickly apologized as he came back to his senses. He picked up his fallen phone with shaking hands and sat back down, his whole body trembling.
This time, he didn’t reply to the message. He didn’t even block the sender. He decided he would show it to Zhang Jun at lunchtime.
And since text messages usually include the sender’s number, maybe he could call it, or even trace it—figure out who it was.
Chen Sheng didn’t look at his phone again after that.
He just sat there, freezing cold, unable to shake the fear.
His first instinct had been to think of Zhang Jun—after all, he’d woken up with him beside him this morning. But Chen Sheng had slept so deeply last night, he had no idea when Zhang Jun had gotten into his bed.
Maybe he’d only come over in the morning?
Still, Chen Sheng couldn’t believe Zhang Jun would do something like that.
Which meant… maybe Zhang Jun had been sleeping in the opposite bed all night. And someone else had snuck into the dorm while they were both asleep.
And then… Chen Sheng groaned inwardly.
He had had a perfect chance to catch the intruder last night. But maybe because Zhang Jun had been with him, the bed felt normal again.
So he ended up sleeping too deeply—so deeply he didn’t hear or notice anything.
Chen Sheng sat there, heart pounding, thoughts racing in every direction.
Then finally, lunchtime arrived.
He rushed to the cafeteria, and as soon as Zhang Jun showed up, he told him everything.
Zhang Jun’s face twisted in disgust.
“Ugh, that freak actually snuck into the dorm while we were asleep and took a picture of you sleeping? That’s so disgusting.”
He was holding Chen Sheng’s phone, reading the message from I’ve Been Watching You.
As he read, he kept muttering angrily,
“What kind of disgusting name is that? Seriously, all these creeps have twisted minds and even more twisted usernames.”
Chen Sheng just sat there, silent—he didn’t even hear Zhang Jun ranting.
Because now he remembered how sore he’d felt when he woke up.
If that person had come into the dorm last night… had they done something to him besides taking that photo?
The thought sent a wave of nausea and dread through him. He completely lost his appetite.
Watching Zhang Jun still glaring at his phone and cursing, Chen Sheng finally said,
“Zhang Jun… could you try calling the number? Or see if you can figure out who it belongs to? And after you finish eating, let’s go find the dorm manager and check the cameras.”
Zhang Jun stopped ranting. Only now did he realize they could just try calling the number.
He nodded quickly, opened the message, found the number, and dialed.
Chen Sheng watched nervously as the call went through.
But then he saw Zhang Jun’s expression twist into something strange and unpleasant. Zhang Jun handed the phone back and said grimly,
“The number doesn’t exist.”
Chen Sheng grabbed the phone and tried calling it himself.
Sure enough, the moment the call started, the robotic message came on:
“The number you have dialed is not in service.”
Hearing that voice, Chen Sheng’s face went pale.
Seeing his expression, Zhang Jun stood up and said,
“Forget lunch—come on, I’ll go with you to find the dorm manager. We have to find that damn creep.”
Chen Sheng nodded, face grim, and stood up.
