Chapter 7 – The Stolen Clothes
Along the way, Zhang Jun kept glancing at Chen Sheng, wanting to say something but not knowing how to comfort him.
When they finally arrived at the dorm manager’s office, Zhang Jun walked in first.
The dorm manager was a middle-aged man. At that moment, he was sipping goji berry tea, leaning back in his chair with his legs crossed, looking completely relaxed.
When he saw them enter, he didn’t even put down his thermos of tea.
He simply looked up and asked, “What is it?”
Chen Sheng followed right behind Zhang Jun, standing next to him.
Just as he was about to speak, Zhang Jun beat him to it.
“We’d like to check the surveillance footage.”
The middle-aged man raised an eyebrow. “Why? Something missing?”
“Yes,” Zhang Jun replied. “Something was stolen from our dorm. I suspect someone snuck in while we weren’t there and took it.”
The man casually moved his chair aside while holding the thermos.
“Go ahead and check it yourselves. You know how to use the system, right?”
Zhang Jun nodded quickly and waved Chen Sheng over.
Chen Sheng hurried to the computer, and the two of them blocked the view of the monitor from the dorm manager completely.
The dorm manager didn’t mind. He leisurely opened his thermos and took a sip, smacking his lips in satisfaction.
Meanwhile, Zhang Jun pulled up the footage from the hallway outside their dorm room.
Chen Sheng’s heart was pounding.
Once they selected the time frame and started the footage, both of them stared at the screen intensely.
At first, the footage played normally—but then it started to lag and glitch. The screen turned a blinding blur, becoming completely distorted and fuzzy.
“What the hell’s going on here?” Zhang Jun turned to the dorm manager, confused.
The man glanced lazily at the monitor and replied,
“Oh, that? That’s normal. The school’s surveillance system is ancient. Probably just electrical aging. It happens a lot.”
Zhang Jun twitched his mouth in frustration.
He turned back to Chen Sheng. “Now what do we do?”
Chen Sheng was still staring intently at the monitor.
Despite the whitewashed blur on the screen, he could vaguely make out a hazy figure appearing near his dorm door.
He quickly replayed the segment over and over, but it was simply too blurry.
You could barely tell it was a person—no clear build, no defining features—just a pale, distorted outline.
Pointing at the screen, Chen Sheng said,
“Look—right there. That’s the one who got into my dorm… I mean, stole my stuff.”
Because the dorm manager was still nearby, Chen Sheng chose to frame it as theft.
After all, being stalked by some perverted guy was extremely embarrassing.
Zhang Jun stared at the blurry figure on the screen.
His thoughts: What the hell is that? It’s like abstract art. So warped.
This surveillance system was garbage—you could barely even tell it was a person.
Not giving up, Zhang Jun changed the time frame—looking at last night’s footage.
Again, around 1 a.m., the footage glitched the same way.
Another blurry, twisted figure appeared.
Zhang Jun kept digging, switching to every suspicious time slot—every incident Chen Sheng had mentioned, and even earlier footage. He checked every angle of the hallway that hadn’t been erased.
And after checking everything—
Chen Sheng noticed something too: every time that figure appeared, the footage glitched.
Any other time, the video was crystal clear.
What the hell was going on?
Did this person tamper with the cameras?
Zhang Jun finally lost patience and shut the footage off.
He turned to the dorm manager, who was still lounging with his thermos, and said,
“Isn’t something wrong with the surveillance? Can’t it be reported so someone can fix it?”
The man shrugged.
With zero concern, he said,
“Plenty of people have already complained. We reported it, but nothing ever came of it. No one’s been sent to repair it. You might as well change your lock or store your valuables properly.”
Zhang Jun was fuming, but he knew the dorm manager was just a caretaker. Without action from above, there was nothing he could do—and he certainly wasn’t going to spend money out of his own pocket.
Hearing this, Chen Sheng lowered his head and gently tugged at Zhang Jun’s sleeve.
“Let’s go.”
Zhang Jun sighed and followed Chen Sheng out of the office.
Chen Sheng’s heart sank. He was deeply disappointed.
He had finally thought they’d found a lead.
But the phone number was fake, and now the surveillance footage was useless.
Then again, it made sense. Whoever this person was—they clearly knew what they were doing. They obviously didn’t want to be caught.
“Chen Sheng, are you alright?”
“I’m fine… I just don’t know what to do now.”
Zhang Jun also felt helpless. They had nothing—no clues, no leads.
All they knew was that the person was somewhere on campus. But in a school this big, finding one person was like looking for a needle in a haystack.
Even a single class had dozens of students, not to mention all the different majors and departments.
And some students didn’t even live in the dorms.
There were several dorm buildings for male students alone.
They’d already checked the surveillance. It was as if they hadn’t.
Because every time that person showed up, the video glitched.
Zhang Jun sighed again.
Then suddenly, his eyes lit up.
“How about this—you come stay in my dorm. That perv probably won’t sneak into my room. There are five of us in my dorm already, and we’ve still got one extra bed.”
Chen Sheng’s eyes lit up too.
“Really? They won’t mind?”
“Of course not. But I’ll ask them anyway, just in case. Don’t worry—it’ll be fine.
We should get to class now. I’ll check with them later.”
“Okay.”
…
After their afternoon classes, Zhang Jun and Chen Sheng headed back to Zhang Jun’s dorm together.
Chen Sheng hesitated at the door, looking uneasy.
Zhang Jun noticed and pulled him in with a smile.
“Relax—I already told them. They don’t mind. Come on in.”
Chen Sheng let himself be pulled into the room.
Compared to Chen Sheng’s dorm, Zhang Jun’s was definitely more cramped, but it wasn’t too bad. There were six beds total, arranged in bunk style—not too crowded.
Across from the beds were closets and desks. The bathroom was inside the dorm, with a window near the shower.
The layout was similar to Chen Sheng’s dorm.
But the big difference was how lively Zhang Jun’s dorm was.
With all six guys in one room, some were gaming, some were snacking, and some were chatting.
When they saw Chen Sheng, they greeted him warmly.
Chen Sheng politely greeted them back.
Zhang Jun was already helping him set up the spare bed.
It turned out the only empty bed was an upper bunk, which Chen Sheng hadn’t expected. He had a bit of a fear of heights, but right now that was the least of his worries.
Once the bed was made, Zhang Jun led him to his own bed, which was the bottom bunk.
“So, what do you think? My dorm isn’t as big as yours, but it’s not bad, right?”
Chen Sheng nodded.
“It’s great. A lot livelier than mine.”
“Exactly. You can relax now. With a different bed and a new room, you’ll finally get a good night’s sleep.”
Then Zhang Jun suddenly remembered,
“By the way, you haven’t brought your clothes yet. Want to go get them? You can wear mine in the meantime—this outfit I’m wearing is still yours. I’ll wash and dry it tonight and give it back. Or if it bothers you, I’ll just buy you a new set.”
“No, no…” Chen Sheng quickly waved his hands. “No need to buy anything. I’d rather go back and get my own clothes. I’m just not used to wearing someone else’s.”
“Alright,” Zhang Jun said. “I’ll go with you.”
“Mm.” Chen Sheng agreed, and the two of them made their way to his dorm.
Using his key, Chen Sheng unlocked the door. Everything looked normal inside.
He walked to his closet and opened it.
Suddenly, he staggered back, trembling all over.
Zhang Jun, who was right behind him, stared at the completely empty closet—his eyes went wide.
“Your… your clothes? What the hell—did that pervert sneak in again and steal all your clothes? Not even one left—wait a second…”
As he took a closer look, Zhang Jun was stunned.
Even Chen Sheng’s underwear was gone. The entire closet was completely empty.
