Chapter 9 – It Might Not Be Human
Chen Sheng stared at the densely packed messages, clutching his mouth tightly with his hand. It was the kind of chill that made his scalp feel like it was about to explode.
Especially because the knocking on the wall beside him was still continuing—steady and rhythmic.
It was just like a horror movie, as if some ghost were hiding in the cracks or inside the walls.
And only he could hear it. Everyone else in the dorm was still fast asleep.
Chen Sheng didn’t dare make a sound, but the fear was overwhelming. He didn’t reply to the messages either.
But another one came immediately:
[I put some clothes in your wardrobe. They have my scent. I want Chen Sheng’s body to be completely soaked in my smell—every inch of you. I really love you, Chen Sheng. Hurry and put them on.]
As soon as Chen Sheng saw this message, his hands trembled as he immediately blocked the sender.
His phone finally fell silent. No more messages came.
And just like that, the knocking on the wall abruptly stopped.
It was all too coincidental.
That cold bed the other night? It had happened in the middle of the night—just like when that person first added him.
Now, the knocking on the wall started at night too, and once again, he received the messages late at night.
A strong premonition gripped Chen Sheng.
A powerful, chilling fear swept over him.
What if the thing that kept harassing him wasn’t even human?
Otherwise, how could it hide so deeply and move so secretly—doing things that should have been impossible? He remembered the blurry figure in the surveillance footage during the day—anytime that person appeared, it was always just a vague, smeared shape.
If the camera was faulty due to old wiring, shouldn’t it be consistently blurry?
But when they checked other footage, it was clear. Only the shots of his dorm room became blurry—every time.
The image of that fuzzy figure came back to Chen Sheng’s mind. What if… it wasn’t a person?
What if… something else had latched onto him?
And that thing… didn’t seem to want to kill him. Otherwise, he would have been dead the moment he first arrived at the academy.
But even though it didn’t want to hurt him… it had a terrifying kind of “love.”
Chen Sheng couldn’t stop shaking at the thought.
If it wasn’t human, then this completely shattered his understanding of the world.
No—he needed to confirm it again.
Up until now, it was always the other side contacting him first. But he needed to test it further… confirm it just once more…
Chen Sheng didn’t sleep again that night.
By morning, the rest of the dorm started waking up one after another.
Zhang Jun was startled when he saw how pale Chen Sheng’s face was, with dark circles under his eyes.
“You… you didn’t sleep again? Was the bed cold again? But wait, you switched beds—why are you still like this? Don’t tell me…”
Zhang Jun’s expression suddenly turned grim with fear.
Chen Sheng then told Zhang Jun everything that happened the previous night.
After hearing it, Zhang Jun turned to stare at the wall behind the upper bunk, horrified.
“That’s impossible… I’ve never heard the wall make any sounds before. Are you sure you didn’t mishear it?”
Chen Sheng shook his head firmly. “I woke up because of that sound. I was fully awake. I even touched the wall—it felt like something cold grabbed my hand. The chill from the wall was exactly the same as the coldness from that bed before.”
Then, he remembered the message from “I’m always watching you” about the wardrobe.
He continued, “He said he put clothes in my dorm wardrobe. Zhang Jun, come with me. I’ve got this strong feeling, and I need to confirm it again.”
Zhang Jun swallowed hard. “Alright. Let’s go now.”
Chen Sheng led Zhang Jun back to his old dorm.
As he opened the door with his key, the sense of dread grew stronger—an overwhelming, gut-level unease. Not from the temperature, but from something within.
The room temperature was normal.
But Chen Sheng still felt chilled to the bone. He and Zhang Jun walked to the wardrobe.
Under Zhang Jun’s watchful gaze, Chen Sheng opened the wardrobe.
And there—where it had been empty just yesterday—were now dozens of clothes hanging neatly.
Chen Sheng immediately stumbled back in fear.
Zhang Jun’s face also turned pale.
“He really did prepare a whole wardrobe of clothes for you…”
Chen Sheng took just one look at the clothes before slamming the wardrobe shut.
He didn’t even bother locking the door as they hurried out.
At this point, what good would locking the door do? Like covering your ears to block thunder—completely pointless.
If the thing that had been stalking him wasn’t human, then maybe it had been in the dorm all along.
It knew the space inside and out.
That’s how it could take pictures of him while he slept—it had always been there.
And then he remembered something else—when Zhang Jun had returned with him that one time and showered for ages… afterward, he’d acted like a totally different person.
Chen Sheng turned to Zhang Jun. “That night, when you came back to the dorm with me… do you remember anything that happened afterward?”
Zhang Jun was stunned by the sudden question. He tried to recall…
But nothing came to mind. At the time, he hadn’t thought much of it.
Now, thinking back—it was terrifying in retrospect.
Zhang Jun looked at Chen Sheng. “I don’t remember… What happened that night?”
Chen Sheng, face as white as paper, told him exactly how he had behaved when he came out of the bathroom that night.
Zhang Jun’s face went pale too—utter disbelief on his face.
“What the hell? I had no idea I was acting like that. And I don’t remember anything. That’s not something I would ever do!”
“Then why didn’t you say anything to me the next morning!?”
Chen Sheng, still pale, replied, “I just thought you’d been frightened. And when I asked you at the bathroom door about the dorm supervisor, you still remembered that—so I didn’t overthink it.”
Zhang Jun stammered, “That was just me going along with what you were saying! I mean, after everything that happened… I should have been asking for the dorm supervisor.”
His voice trembled. “Now that you’ve said it, do you think I was possessed that night?!”
At this point, it was hard not to believe in the supernatural. The more they thought about it, the scarier it became.
Chen Sheng nodded grimly. “It’s very possible. But I need to confirm it once more.”
“How?” Zhang Jun asked, goosebumps rising all over him—even though it was broad daylight.
“I’ll wait until the next time he contacts me. Then I’ll ask him directly.”
Zhang Jun: “…”
“If it really isn’t human, then what do we do?” he asked. “This is even harder to deal with. How did you end up being haunted by something this terrifying? At first, I thought it was just some crazy stalker guy—but now it’s something far worse. And still crazy… but also horrifying.”
“If he’s not human…” Chen Sheng said softly, “then I don’t know what to do either. If it really gets bad, I’ll just move out.”
“Would that work? I’ve got a bad feeling that no matter where you go, it’ll just keep following you… watching you.”
Zhang Jun rubbed his arms, feeling the goosebumps rising again.
“…Let’s just go to class for now.”
Chen Sheng was afraid—but fear alone couldn’t solve anything.
The truth was, this was the first time he’d encountered something like this.
And he had no idea how to deal with it.
Even though that thing didn’t seem to want to kill him… just the thought of it was horrifying.
